Thanks guys for the info....I had a feeling it was probably Dubai....but my mind doesn't easily grasp the idea of the low cloud covering/fog with a desert setting..

That first pic, with the buildings coming out of the clouds, struck me as looking like Caprica from Battlestar Glactica. Thanks for posting.

Yep, that first pic was taken from the Burj Dubai itself earlier during construction. The recession has hit the UAE hard. I had a lot of respect for that place since almost the entire population was expat (80-90%) and it seemed primed for future growth away from petroleum, far outpacing its Persian Gulf peers.

Despite their go-go western image however, many laws are vestigal remnants of a very conservative culture. The one I'll mention here is that debtor's prisons are very much a part of the legal system. About 5,000 cars have been abandoned at the airport by expats who owned those gleaming condos, lost their jobs, and fled in terror to avoid prison.
