Oakdale is a small city in the San Joaquin Valley, about 15 miles northeast of Modesto where I was out visiting family this weekend. My cousin and I decided to take a drive out to the country.

I always like your threads of these small CA towns. Looks like it's nice, also looks way clearer than I've usually seen the central valley.

Does the place look like life after the neutron bomb (i.e. entirely free of the invasive species known as man) just because it was Sunday?

Anyway, nice pictures of a place that would make a good movie set.

Thanks! Yah, the weather has been great for photos and it being windy helped keep the skies clear.

There were A LOT of cars driving through the area which kept getting in the way of my shots, but, save the saddle sale and two people who stepped out of some casino/bingo place, downtown Oakdale was pretty devoid of anyone except us.

Sweet pics as always and yet another interesting look at another Cali town. This one was not only void of people but even cars. We have scores of similar small towns in Colorado, I just don't like going to them because the folks there make you feel like you don't belong. They like knowing everyone around them, and their business. Thanks for sharing!

Nice pics! You've really done an amazing job with your california threads, and central valley towns and cities aren't seen very often here. Have you ever been to/taken pictures of Buttonwillow? I went through there once while trying to find food off of interstate 5, and I was wishing I had my camera (it's also the geographic center of California too, as wikipedia tells me).

Oh yeah, and too bad you didn't stay in Oakldale long enough for the "testicle festival" ;):

Great photos and a pretty town. It is kind strange to have an entire town all to yourself.

Nothing wrong with Oakdale, right at the base of the foothills of the Sierra Nevada mountains. Nice pics. Is Oakdale still pretty independent of Modesto?

Hmmm...yah, it is a shame I missed that! :haha: I am planning on going to Bakersfield at some point, I will have to check Buttonwillow out.

Modesto is definitely close enough for residents to commute, but, I think there is a healthy amount of farm land (maybe a good 10-15 minutes) separating the cities.
