My Calgary construction project!
It all started with a flood from the renovations of the apartment above in June 2008, followed by a hailstorm during Stampede July 2008 which poured through a hole in the roof and through the gutted apartment above and damaged the kitchen wall and the dining room ceiling so I had to move out for the ceiling and wall to be removed.
Everything that could go wrong did go wrong with the whole procedure, but in the end, I got the results I wanted.
I am really pleased with the how the design process went. I think the designer did a great job of defining and refining what I wanted. She didn't impose her sense of style on me.
Everything in the apartment was replaced except for the radiators, a bath tub, and the 2 front doors.
Show home cleaners are coming on Tuesday and then I can move back in.
I have been using laundromats since I left home at 16 so it is a thrill to have my own washer and dryer and I'm sure I now have the finest laundry room in all of condoland!

I'm not allowed to vent the dryer into the building's vent stack and I'm not allowed to vent outside so the dryer vent goes into a cupboard with a rolltop cover and ends in a plastic pail of water which happens to be adjacent to the building's vent stack opening!

Folks.

I'm preparing some posters for a booth at a national medical conference. With the recent Mayor Nenshi Eastern Canadian visit top of mind, I thought it appropriate to make a "Why Calgary?" poster as of the ones we'll have at the booth. Then I thought, what image best responds to that title, "Why Calgary?" Can I put that out to the photographers on this thread? It can be one of the many that have already been posted, but you need to provide a few thoughts on how the image answers, "Why Calgary?". I'd then also like to use the photo for the one time poster. I'll provide credit, but there are no funds for this. It is only one time use IE the poster will be up for a few days at a conference booth, and then it will be recycled.

To get things started, how about something from the lilac festival?

Here are a few pictures from the demolition of the former Westo Fertilizer Company's head office, just north of 106 Ave west side of Barlow Trail. I work in the building right next door, so I had a prime view. Plus, I had extra time to take even more photos since someone forget to remove the live data feed going through the building to the rest of the plant, so now the building sites 2/3rd demolished while they plan a new data line around the (now spliced) original line :stunned:

Great picture, thank you for sharing this familiar view that i have been found of from the time it was completed. I used to stand in the very same spot and look up, bending backwards for maximum effect as this way surely was/ is the usual and best way to do so. I have always liked this building. These skyscrapers look just fine. I myself could never understand why so many people have a dislike for this tower. For me it has always looked proud and tall. It is truly monolithic standing against its surroundings. brawny and stout, is how I have always felt about it. Big, strong, tall, that is its attractiveness and it still gives off that feeling, even when there is a bigger, taller, tower right next door. ( as can be seen in your photo's reflection). None less, the Petro Canada tower remains proud, it still puffs up its chest and shines in its unique, bright and reddish-copper. While it may be big and in your face, it will never be anything but beautiful to me.:worship:

I think the dislike for the PetroCanada Centre was not because of the architecture, but for what the towers represented to western Canada and the Calgary oil patch in that era of Canadian politics.

Chef Mario, of Pimento's came out from the pizzeria while I was taking the photo. I was kinda suprised he came out and asked what I thought of the sign and if he should turn it off. The billboard previously said "Upgrade your Spouse" and is being run as part of a CJAY promotion.

As much as I dislike CJAY, they're not responsible for the Abuse portion. If you look closely, it's a giant sticker that someone has pasted on. Clever but kind of disturbing considering how close the women's shelter is to that location.

I thought the initial billboard was tasteless to begin with for the community. When the sign was changed to "abuse", I had suspected that the sign had been vandalized to highlight just how tasteless the original campaign was.

I hadn't at all thought about the women's shelter that is in very close proximity as well. And now realize it is much more disturbing at the risk of re-victimizing these women. I agree that the sign should be pulled. Is this something that should be reported to the police, CJAY or the community association?

When I called CJAY they said they have been receiving a number of complaints already about the billboard. In addition to the close proximity to the 24 hour emergency women's shelter which is within several blocks, the billboard is also within a block from a schoolyard. When I spoke to the promotions department, CJAY said they are planning to remove the graffiti, but are not planning on changing the original sign. I am getting in touch with the operations manager later today to request the billboard be removed.

because I know we love HDR!

Here are some photos I took in 2003. I used three different exposures and spliced them together, You can clearly see where the pics were spliced. I wanted to capture everything in those pictures and I guess that is what HDR does. It finds the best light levels and splices pictures together. That is why you get all of those crazy edges.
