I spent Thursday morning at Holt Renfrew taking pictures for a company in Toronto. It was my first time in the new store and is it ever a beautiful place to see.
Once the Core and EAP are done, it will be wow wow wow.

No photography is allowed in the store so I'll spare you the 10 gbs of images I shot ( a few were ok I hope!), but I thought this would be ok to show from the back door entrance. I liked the minimalist look of this shot and I have nicknamed the mannequin "Calgary Red Eye".

So, I discovered today that The Bow is quite an interesting subject to apply a circular polarizing filter to. Owing to it's curved nature, you can get some interesting effects. With the right rotation, the glass ends up reflecting a dark purple back at your sensor. Here's an animiated gif to show you what I'm talking about:

Here are a couple of more examples; showing a more normal view, and a more dramatic view with the polarizer turned a certain direction:

NOT:

OH YES:

You'll notice that the wood reflects light in a different manner depending on the rotation of the filter - which suggests to me that the wood grain/plywood bias is actually tending to reflect the light in a certain plane - something I would have never expected.

I personally prefer the second "Purple Bow" picture, even though the sky is not optimally constrasty. I'm interested in what you's all think about this - but I am certain that The Bow is going to have some interesting interpretations done with a polarizer !

Dammit I was there most of the day yesterday and didn't even notice.
Love it.

I thought that was a clever reworking of that sign. It's a neat old building, I hope we don't lose it.

Where are the best deals / service for buying a new SLR camera package around the downtown core? (including some zoom lenses and bag etc....)

I have shopped around and the price differences are quite remarkable so far. For the same package there was a price difference of 300 - 600 dollars. Blacks was the worst, Saneal was second, and the one near the bay had the best price.

The guy at Saneal kept on having to phone management to get any deals. The only "extra" he could knock off was $25.00 if I used cash instead of credit.....:koko: I asked him if they could throw in a memory card and he phoned the manager back. The manager said no.

Blacks has also become very coorporate. The only thing they could do was price match.

The guy near the bay (forget the name) was awesome because he wasn't scared to offer a good package price....and he threw in a memory card into the quote without me asking. Bartering still does exist in this city!

Any tips on other stores would be great......Don's photo maybe?? Believe it or not..... best buy and future shop were (by far) the worst in price but that is because they dont specialize in SLR's I think.

*No car was used to look for the camera....only bike, transit and walking...* I know, it takes oil to make the camera but I have went without one for 6 years now!

I bought my XSi at bestbuy... and I'm looking at memory express for my next lens...

But I would probably go to Vistek.

Try Robinsons Camera (http://robinsonscamera.com/) as well (unless you are looking for Nikon). They'll price match anything you come up with at the other Calgary stores.

Memory Express has turned into one of my favourite places to buy equipment as they will match any Canadian retailers price without question or (more importantly) attitude, as long as it's in stock.

Also check out http://www.photoprice.ca/ for price comparisons across Canada and the US.

nice! dont laugh but I might rent some equipment for a day to try it out first. I want to make the right choices...... then buy. I want great zoom capability, but dont want the visual clarity to be impaired by buying an 18-250 lens. So it looks like i will need one more lens than I originally wanted to buy. does anyone have recommendation for a great zoom lens what is fairly versatile? Or is the 18 - 250 ok? How about an 18 - 150?

I dunno........ f-me...... :sly: :sly: :sly:   :slob:

eBay. I bought my Nikon D300 from Henry's Cameras in Toronto from an eBay auction. I was the only bidder so I got it for the minimum bid which was cheaper than the lowest retail price, but of course no bargain. Delivery was quick.

I'd suggest getting the kit lenses to start off with (18-55 & 55-200 or 70-300) get used to your new gear and figure out what lengths you typically shoot at. The Nikkor 18-105 has got some decent reviews for a kit lens too.

Unless you have a tonne of cash to drop and don't really care about learning your gear... Go with full frame bodies and f/2.8 lenses.

You need to set a budget, read the reviews and decide what direction you are taking. Whether it's Canon or Nikon you won't be disappointed.

My gear consists of:
Nikon D90
Nikkor 18-200mm f/3.5-5.6 - all in one general use lens.
Tokina 11-16mm f/2.8 Super wide angle lens.
Nikkor 35mm and 50mm f/1.8 (low light, fast and sharp prime lenses).
Tamron 90mm f/2.8 macro lens
I sold my 80-200mm f/2.8 zoom, as I didn't use it often enough.

I can honestly say that I don't need anymore lenses, I've been quite content with my gear (for the time being) ;)

Good luck!

You can rent a tonne of stuff from the camera store too.

Maybe this discussion should be moved to the DSLR thread.
