View Full Version : HRM Neighbourhood Map Project

Inspired by the Toronto Star, and building on a debate a couple years ago on halifax locals and wikipedia, I think it could be fun and instructive to ask people "what is the name of your neighbourhood."

The "North" or "West End" are huge areas, which used to have neighbourhoods inside them like Ardmore, Armcrest, Bloomfield. I am interested in hearing what you call where you live, where you grew up, where you work.

I grew up in Dartmouth, and everyone knew where Graham's Corner was, even though it never appeared on any maps I have seen, until Google put it in the wrong place entirely on their map/

So, I have created a shared google map with SOME neighbourhoods from urban Halifax drawn in as a starting point. Nothing is set in stone. For the purpose of the exercise I am focusing us on Bedford, Dartmouth, Cole Harbour, Eastern Passage, and Halifax. The rest of HRM is mostly distinct towns or areas that are well defined.

Tell me where Armdale ends and Spryfield begins!

Review the map here: http://www.halifaxpolitics.ca/hrm-urban-map-project/

Email me here with your changes: wayemason(at)gmail(dot)com

Let the games begin!

Sounds pretty cool.

I can help with most of the Bedford ones.

Here's my neighbourhood though;

Eaglewood (Bedford); Dartmouth Rd - Magazine Hill DND Fence - Eagle's Rock - Admiral's Cove Dr - Shore Drive - Parker's Brook - Dartmouth Rd

Here's a map I quickly drew up of it (http://maps.live.com/default.aspx?v=2&FORM=LMLTCP&cp=44.724845~-63.647447&style=h&lvl=15&tilt=-90&dir=0&alt=-1000&phx=0&phy=0&phscl=1&cid=155D085CBC213868!271&encType=1)

Now we know where you live :)

Here's a good one I'm going to throw out to the group. Anybody know exactly what the boundaries are of Westphal? I've heard Westphal described before as everything from Lake Mic Mac and the Parclo all the way out along Main Street/#7 Hwy to Cherry Brook, not including Woodlawn, Montebello or Port Wallace.

Seconded.

I need help with Montebello, Port Wallace, Westphal, Caledonia.

I thought you already knew from my Eagle's Rock pictures ;)

Wayne here are a couple more Bedford one's;

Ridgevale; Parkers Brook - Bedford ByPass - Dartmouth Rd - Parkers Brook (right across from Eaglewood). See the map below for the exact details

Fort Sackville; Golf Links @ Shore Drive - Fish Hatchery Lane @ Shore Dr - CN Rail - Dartmouth Rd - Wardour St - Library Property Line (mid way down street) - Parkers Brook

Added some of the boundaries in Bedford here for you;

You kidding? I don't know where anything is in Bedford. I know how to drive through it to get to somewhere else, but that's it :haha:

I don't know wether to be insulted or laughing :haha:

Oh and Wayne I added some more in on my link above.

Here are some I noticed for in Halifax;

The blank area bounded by Robie-North-Windsor-Young is commonly called Gladstone.

Mount Royale, not currently on map, fills up much of the land between the 102, Dunbrack St and Mainland North Common.

And, Lakeside Industrial Park is the two cul-de-sacs North of where Beechville is printed (St. Margret's Bay Rd).

For the Halifax peninsula, I'd add
-Fairmount (Mount Olivet cemetery)
-"The Pubs", public housing on Romans and Federal Ave
-Windsor Park

Also, I would extend Springvale to include the newer development flanking the Chester Spur rail line.

Within Spryfield, you could include the Greystone housing area (surrounds Greystone Dr.)

Cool idea :)

I have to migrate the map to Google Maps API, see the update on http://www.halifaxpolitics.ca for more details.

Once we migrate it I will add all the changes here, see where we are at.

Keep the suggestions coming!

I added Windsor/Willow Park for the military part.

Added Springvale, Fairmount, Mount Royale (check the last two please!)

Added Greystone.

Pubs. Not sure about that. I know a guy who lived there and called the whole area that. Would it extend north west past the rail line? I called it Westwood (the Pubs) for now, extended the West End to include Mic Mac

They look good. :)

And for the Bedford ones I made it very easy for you and subdivided all of Bedford within the Bi-Hi/Bypass (+ 2 in Rocky Lake and one in Sackville). You might want to double check the boundaries but other than that they are there for you to copy anytime you want to.

A couple more suggestions;

Wallace Heights - In Dartmouth at the end of Princess Margret Blvd right at the foot of the McKay Bridge near the tollbooths.

South Barrington - slowly coming into common use for the section of Barrington between Maritime Centre and Superstore.

A co-worker recently showed me the HRM Maps site.
http://www.halifax.ca/giss/index.html
It was new to me so I thought that it was worth sharing on the forum.
By using all the tools, especially the layers, you can bring up civic numbers, viewplanes, height levels (which would likely be updated when HBD is passed) and more.
I think it is great.

Hey Wayne,

In the post I quoted above there is a cool map that can show you the official boundaries maps for communities (i.e. Bedford, Halifax).

I thought it was a pretty cool idea so I added the Bedford boundary to my Live Map. I'll probably add other boundaries soon.

All you have to do is click "Explore HRM", accept the Terms and Conditions, click "Continue", click "Search", then on the drop down menu choose Communities, and then finally choose the community from the drop-down menu that appears.

P.S. I also added some Sackville communities and a few in Bedford (outside of the Bi-Hi).

Thank-you for the recognition on your website. The map is looking very nice. :)

I think that this weekend I will create a message board for the debate to happen on and then take it to the mainstream media to really start the debate. :) Thanks for all your hard work!

No problem Wayne :)

I get really bored sometimes so I have a tendancy to start doodling, creating lists, or research things for the forum. It's nice to have a challenge every once in awhile.

I added in a couple more boundaries for you on my map. Feel free to steal them anytime and well don't worry about the exact details on the map I do it very precisely, just so you know.

BTW I hope you don't mind I added a link to your website on the Compilation Thread. I have a feeling more people read that thread so you might get more views. If you want it removed or anything just say so. :)
