Soon to join the likes of Ibiza, London, NYC, Tokyo, Madrid, welcome to Beirut:
The Lebanese are rightly famous for their nightlife and partying culture. Before the war Beirut was a mecca for the glitterati
in the sixties and seventies, now its starting to regain some of its former flash. Places where the diaspora settled opened some of
the world's first 24 hr zones, such as Edgeware Rd in London in the mostly muslim Lebanese community way back in the 70s and 80s,
and well before Piccadilly, Soho, East End et al.
These are some pix taken of the Lebanese nightlife, it also goes to point at why visitors consistently vote the city
in the top 10 destinations in the world:

Oh I know they've been trying to carry on. Problem is, they're an outpost in what could be the most socially-backward region of the world. That automatically puts them at risk, particularly the women for showing their ankles.

My friend grew up in Beirut and Warren, MI and said in spite of war, it's pretty sweet and fun. It's like having Parisian riots non-stop when war is going full-tilt. It just leaves the streets blackened and people don't do all they want to, but it's an amazing city and very fragrant like pine trees.
I didn't know they had pine trees.
Also, coffee shops. An excess of coffee shops. She said she started drinking coffee drinks when she was a little kid, which I figured was taboo in most of the coffee-drinking world.
How european, I says to her.

They aren't pine trees, they are Cedar trees, not trying to be nit picky, but its a pretty big difference on a biological level as we as a "hey what can we built out of this" level. They are extremely good for building boats because Cedar wood does not rot (the plants grow with a toxin that prevents most mold and fungi from growing as well as a high waxy content). The "Cedars of Lebanon" are very significant to world history since this wood is partially responsible for the flowering of world trade via the Phoenicians. The Phoenicians built large quantities of very high quality, durable boats out of Lebanon Cedar. This allowed them to be one of the first civilizations to engage in true, long distance, open ocean, world trade. A Cedar tree is even on the flag of Lebanon.

But Beirut looks interesting. I love trying out places that may be considered a little more, unexpected. One of the best trips I have ever taken was the one I took to Egypt for a few weeks.

^ I certainly "doth not protest too much", I think you just need to recognize that around here people often start threads declaring themselves the "party capital of the world" followed by pictures of people partying. Not that I know what "party capital of the world" means, but to me it's kind of promotional and gimmicky. But if you want to be the party capital of the world, I'm not going to stand in your way.

Beirut is definitely on my must-visit list for the next few years, especially now that the situation there has calmed down and you can also get a visa on arrival. However, I would go there to explore the city and not for the nightlife seeing as I pretty much despise night clubs and discotheques.

Beirut has always been down to party. It just received so much negative press over the past few decades that people forgot how fun and nice the place really is. Watch the No Reservations episode about the city to see what I'm talking about.

If you are an unsightly straight man, you too can lounge by the pool and horrify onlookers!
Beirut's OK. I wouldn't want to go back. My alarm clock was the stifling heat that immediately chokes you when the electricity cuts off every morning, the roaches are everywhere and it's insanely difficult to get around.
All of that being said, it's a very charming place, but for parties? It offers pretty much what every city offers: nightlife with a perverse take on American pop culture (if I never hear "may-eeh-ah-hee" again...), pop music, red-rope clubs you can't get into without knowing someone or speaking Arabic.
Just beware trying to make out with anyone.

Apparently many people aren't familiar with your posts Muppet, which I always find worthwhile and interesting. This is a good one!
Thankyou, I think it's good to find what's off the radar. This moniker may not last, not just due to the wars, but the changeability of any given scene. Places like Madrid, once party ground zero (40,000 bars for Chrissakes) have seen the licensing laws tightened and drinking on the streets banned, as did NYC go into a lull under Giuliani. Similarly in London the superclubs (and dance music) have gotten so outdated and patronised by tourists the scene has moved underground again, and diversified into Burlesque, live music and 'activity' (read: bizarro) nights from ping pong to pillow fights. Places like Ibiza, buzzing in the mid-90s, is now a cliche and utterly corporate, and dated.
The places to watch at the moment are Berlin (bankrupted city+ global art scene du jour), and Belgrade, pretty much a 24-7 clubbers city, where it's not the music but the vibe, as in Beirut, and the fact most the population are up for it every night, with little difference between weekdays and weekends, or segregation of scenes, people, age groups or how hip you look.

I think to have an amazing 'scene' you need to get rid of it first. What you want is:
1. Good weather. There's alot to be said about the fun to be had between a strobelight superclub with the latest tunes and $40 a head to get in with $12 drinks, or a simple party by a pool and a beach.
2. Struggle. The clash between new and old, conservative and liberal. Put a leftfield hipster into Brick Lane and they will meld into the background of following the crowd. Transport them into a traditional society and they will stand out and be more individualistic. Put a bikini in a Cote d'Azur cafe and noone would blink, put her in a casbah and you've got something else entirely - a statement of sorts. Take a liberal city and put it into a conservative heartland, and it will act like a magnet, attracting people for miles.
3. Lack of a specific 'scene' or a worship of a musical style / lifestyle / fashion. Take away the snobs, the rivalry, the showing off and you also get rid of the alienation of everyone else.
4. Not too much a reliance to drugs or alcohol (though freely available, it doesn't takeover the nights, and it isnt ubiquitous to having a good time or getting accepted). The city at night becomes open to all, from OAPs and kids, to families taking a stroll, or insomniacs just chilling out on the beach. There are no 'no-go' zones, less spending and more socialising. A more ambient atmosphere, and due to increased safety, freer.
5. Going out does not have to equate to having to get laid at the end of it, the genders interact more without the constant chase, and without the sexual politics. You can actually hang out, make friends with the opposite side without them thinking you want to get in their pants.
Put these into motion and you find EVERYONE comes out, the streets are thriving and the people you meet from every spectrum imaginable.
There. Simple really ;)

You must be writing from the female's perspective.
I don't know any straight males that would ever consider that statement something that they look forward to. Making friends with the opposite side is the last thing on my mind. I have no interest in accumulating platonic female friends, especially as a preferred alternative to meeting women for romantic interests when I am out.

What's "female" about that? I like sex with women just as much as the next straight guy, but what's wrong with just partying and having a good time with random people? I mean, I'm not saying I go to a club looking to be pen pals with the girls I meet, but believe it or not, having stress free fun is the ONLY priority for me when I go out. Physicality can be a part of that, but it doesn't have to be, and usually isn't, because that isn't the goal for me when I go out. Maybe I'm in the minority there.

Personally I always find things more fun when you leave the pulling at the door, it de-stresses you and keeps things simple - and leaves the chase for another day. The worst, worst clubs are the meatmarkets patronised by students, randy men and slappers, the kind of places where men stand about watching attention seeking women (all two of them) tonguing each other on the dancefloor, and where they hire people to get jiggy on podiums (wank!). They also tend to be the same clubs that are completely boozed up, everyone has attitude, and where people end up in fights.
Hate to say it, but the clubs back in the 90s when ecstasy was the thang completely left the pulling brigade behind, and reset the tables on the nightclub format, due to the effects of the drug. I don't think Ive ever hugged so many loved-up men and women, and had so much fun since well, ever. Truth be told I got laid more times without either of us ever intending to that way...
I did once go to a complete meat market at Collosseum, a garage night that was one of the worst in my life, and where EVERYONE was after one thing. Basically we spent most of the night following a car full of soldiers who were trying to gangbang some off her face slapper :(. Back in my hometown all the clubs are like that.

and diversified into Burlesque, live music and 'activity' (read: bizarro) nights from ping pong to pillow fights
..interesting you should mention this as this is happening here in little provincial Dayton. There is a burlesque troupe coming through from NYC in the next two weeks, and for "bizarro" there was a "Snuggies Night" a week or two ago, and, so far, two "Rock and Wrestling" shows in the upstairs dance section of a local gay bar...which in itself is a bizzaro juxtaposition for this city.
I didnt know what to make of all this, but your comment sets these going-on in an bigger international clubland context (so I figure the organizers got the idea from NY or some other "connected" place).

As for Beirut I recall a spread in a design magazine on an underground (literally) club with this circular retractable roof...just a wild concept. All the cars parked in a circle around it.
This was a while ago but I was really impressed. Beirut did have a great repuation in decades past, and it looks like it's coming back again.

great shots, Beirut is definitely a must visit city for me...though I will say, these photos show off northern Beirut, and not so much of southern Beirut, where I have heard is a much different atmosphere.
Actually, I listen to a few bands from Beirut, the lead singer of "The New Government" does a great job of posting video documentaries of how he sees Beirut, they are really interesting and give a musician's take on the city and surroundings.

Sounds like a fun place had it not been for Hezbollah running around in the outskirts...
I gotta visit some day, but political opinions kinda prevents that at the time - but once the government get's it's ass in gear I'd love to go and checkout the nightlife

I just put Dayton on my to-visit list. Yep burlesque has been going for some years now, along with traditional working men's clubs (not traditional, nor men's at all), and live music is still going strong after a decade of comeback. Activity nights are fun but the corporate thinktanks are starting to muscle in on the show (slick bowling/ boxing/ bingo nights, posers and lots of marketing etc.) - as they have done with live music. I think the next big thang is Dancehall and Dubstep - but once again, theres nothing new on the scene other than the music - it'll soon be the same crappy formula of dancing to music and putting your hands in the air (once the chavs move on). CRAP!
IN short things are heading downhill..
Here it is anyhow. The bass in these clubs makes your clothes move, but I seriously doubt its going to break the States,
its a bit of an acquired taste:
To break into it easily, first this is meant to be Dubstep but its more drum n bass, the much more commercial forerunner.
More listenable and you can actually move to it -it even got piano
v/b8guxJpC1dY&hl=en&fs=1
This is more real - experimental, heavier bass
v/SRHnipnJvTU&hl=en&fs=1
And this the real thing - heavy, slow, and a leetle dark. More like Grime

Funny, I didn't know Canada had maple trees.
Great thread, since nightlife is my passion :)
I think the first thing to keep in mind is that Lebanon is a Christian country. You heard me right. There are a lot of Muslims living in Lebanon, of course, but from what I understand the ruling elite has been Christian and the country gets many of its social lifestyles and values from Europe.
The photos, as well as the atmosphere they portray, remind me of Mediterranean countries like Spain and France, where parties are hardcore, restaurants are open late into the night, and both hookahs and hookers are on hand ;)
I've met some Lebanese and it's true they love partying. Many of them are hipsters and fashionistas, with the slightly arrogant and standoffish attitudes that are the hallmark of this group.

you'll find its a mix of both Muslim and Christian in the clubs, on the beach, by the pools etc. As mentioned before Londons first 24hr zone was Lebanese, but also a mainly Muslim one - the all night cafes, hookah lounges and clubs cater to their community, and its very hip and relaxed.
I think its a bit unfair, stereotypical and judgmental to say oh, its only the Christians partying just by sheer media assumption. Its also fair to note both Muslim and Christian sects are very orthodox in their creed, but more relaxed in daily life.

yep, nice one mate at trying to derail the thread. The unsaid point is (until now) is that the people have been trying to carry on despite the wars.
although please be said, THIS IS NO INVITE FOR POLITICAL DISCUSSIONS
But thanx anyway for that contribution.
Discussing Beirut is impossible without discussing politics. Several decades ago, Beirut was almost universally known as "The Paris of the Middle East". It was the sophisticated playground and financial center that places like Dubai now want to be. Politics destroyed all that.
Following the civil war, Beirut was making a remarkable comeback until the Israeli invasion--more politics--wrecked things. The comeback got back on track and the recent mutual Hezbollah/Israeli artillery and rocket duel nearly wrecked things again.
So now Beirut is again on the upswing. But the politics of Lebanon are waiting in the wings to wreck it all yet again. Whatever "partying" goes on in Beirut will always have an "enjoy today because who knows what could happen tomorrow" quality. Of course, I've always thought that quality does have the effect of making the partying ever more intense.
