Nice article. A few errors, but whatever. Driving from Lake Louise to Jasper is something I have yet to do. I lived in Banff in 98-99 and never had the time to enjoy the place. I went to Banff on Saturday with some friends and enjoyed the Upper Hot Springs for the first time. I was in a bit too long; was dizzy after. Also went to the Cave & Basin as well, to kill an hour before Bumpers opened for the evening. Neat place, but smelly from the sulphur. The town was super busy and reminded me of a typical summer day.

I do a run up to Jasper every summer at least once, and usually solo. The view never gets old, and rushing down the highway with just your thoughts and that view is an amazing recharge. I also try to time it for the middle of the week, around dinner, so the road is pretty much deserted. Just set the cruise control and go!
The hiking trails are also practically deserted that time of day, too, if you're the thinking type. You really get a sense of just how isolated (and big!) Jasper is when you can spend several hours without seeing another human being - but your car is safely nearby. It's also a mild adrenaline rush to do this when the bears are out prowling. Not quite skydiving, but it does get you hyper-alert.
You haven't lived until you try that trip on a motorcycle. The view is even m ore amazing, the smells are incredible and if you drive like me, you can go anytime you want, because traffic is no longer an issue. Mind you I did lose a hatchet on one trip. I was a little worried that it might of flown through someone's windshield, but luckily that didn't happen.

Out of the Condo Dwellers here, how long would you say it takes to get hot water through a kitchen tap?
I moved Wednesday into 3111 Varsity, and find it takes a full 2 minutes running the tap full hot.

Don't stress about it mate. In my old condo in Garrison Green it often took me that long to get full hot water. Typically in low rise structures like 3111 the boilers for hot water are often relatively far away.

Not a condo but it takes quite some time for hot water to get to my 2nd floor bathrooms. Feels like a full minute but I've never actually timed it.
Really thinking of going tankless, one for each floor, if I ever tear this place up a bit.

Edit: Truth be told I would normally be spending every minute of this trip out on the beach/pool, with Littletime on this trip it is a bit more work to get her ready for the pool/beach and make sure she is covered up. We are also avoiding the sun with her during the height of the day, thus me inside right now enjoying the view while she has lunch. Good times though!

I saw that commercial a million times in February, but never realized it was the Bay. It's really striking when filmed right.
Incidentally, that is another in a long string of commercials that follow this theme. Canada is composed of:
1. the Atlantic coast
2. Toronto (CN Tower)
2a. possibly some lakes
3. wheat
3a. possibly Calgary
4. Mountains
5. the Pacific coast
I've seen at least a dozen in the past couple of years, that basically portray this country as being nothing but wheat between the Rockies and Toronto. It's really amusing how half the frigging landmass has NOTHING of interest for media types. Plus, it solidifies what are Canada's "flyover states".

Fixed that for you. ;) Most people understand that with all seasons they're specifically NOT winter tires so you actually have to pay attention, drive slower, and leave more room. People who use winter tires treat them as a panacea, much like assholes with 4wd who think they can stop better with it.
I can't possibly think of a situation in the summer where I've ever thought "damn, my tires are under-performing" - but then again, I don't drag race or corner at 90, so I may be missing out.
I dunno, I've lived in Calgary long enough to know that every single year, we have stretches where you see days 20+ degree weather (which supposedly wrecks winter tires and/or they don't perform well in) combined with days of 0 and snow (which people say their summer tires can't drive in). It happens every year. I can't understand how anyone would drive with anything OTHER than a tire that can handle both, because every year we see at least 2 month-long periods like this (May and September).
Unless you have 2 vehicles that you choose between each day based on the day's forecast, I don't understand how people justify switching tires and then complaining every single year about switching them too early/late. But boy howdy do I hear about it. Every. Single. Year.
And yeah, it's been a fun bit of OT. However, at least this snow will help Calgary get more trees, which was 4 or 5 pages of OT last week. :P
You do realize that the majority of those idiots who bung up rush hour everytime it snows are on all season tires?
You'll find idiots on any tire. One should always drive accordingly for the conditions, but one shouldn't be a hazard by driving too slow. Winter tires improve your braking by 25%.
Personally, I wouldn't do a winter mountain trip without winter tires.

I agree.
In my experience, it's the people with all season tires make assumptions of the tire's performance based on the name of the tire type - "All season? Sounds perfect". In practice this is terribly inaccurate and sometimes downright dangerous. Yes, you'll find idiots on both sides, but I've found people who buy both winter and summer tires understand the pros and cons better.
Regardless, I know what works for me. My car would eat a set of soft all season tires per summer and I'd be sacrificing a lot of performance. In winter, I'd spin on all seasons but haven't had an issue on winters...

I use winter tires in the winter and summer tires in the summer and that is absolutely the way to go. My summer tires (Pirelli P Zero Nero M&S) are high performance all seasons, but are basically useless if there is snow on the ground. They are very firm and are meant for warmer temperatures, so they won't wear out as fast, and when you are having fun driving, they don't roll over as much in the corners. My winter tires (Yokohama IG20) are fantastic in the snow, it takes less time (and distance) to stop, is't easier to stop, and in combination with my traction control, I can get up any haill with so much as a problem (unless some idiot with crappy tires is stuck in front of me). I've had all seasons, and they are decent, but they just can't compete with specialized tires. And both sets of my tires are 1 season old, so they should easily last another 6 or 7 years since I don't drive very much.

The majority of people period are on all-season tires, that being what most new cars come with these days. So of course the majority of people hanging up traffic are going to be driving them, simple statistics. I find the assertion that people with all-season are overconfident based on their tires baffling.
I'd say 90% of drivers don't even have a clue that they *have* all-season tires, they're just driving on whatever the car came with.
I don't know what kind of all-season tires you guys buy or how you drive, but mine don't wear out very fast. Every year? Maybe you should brand shop a little more (or stop peeling rubber everywhere you go). We only have to replace tires every 3-4 years at most, and we drive 30,000+ km/year.
I still pose the question as to what you're supposed to do when winter and summer conditions happen in the same month for easily 6-8 months out of the year in Calgary. Summer tires are really only remotely safe for June through August, and winter tires are completely useless outside of about 10-15 days a year. Every single other day the roads are completely bare here, barring residential streets where I hope y'all aren't driving recklessly anyway. ;) Hell, I live in the deep NW where we get the most snow in Calgary, and I still only am in "winter driving mode" a few days a month, in the worst months.

I'm a big believer in winter tires, but I don't think it's a must by any means. The majority of weather conditions in the city can be handled with all-season if you're remotely careful about it...and as Freeweed alluded, they provide the best overall option for Calgary's fucked up weather patterns. You can't go switching back and forth for a couple of days of snow.
Having said that, I woudn't head out to the Rockies in all-seasons if its really bad out......like last year when I had no choice and went out in a rear-wheel drive Tacoma with bald-ass all-seasons. That was interesting to say the least.....truck felt like Evan Lysacek on wheels.

I'm not going to say that winter tires are useless, clearly they are the best for winter conditions. For many people however, they are just a waste of (upfront) money. My personal count for days where winter tires might have been helpful for this last winter is about 3, maybe 4. Others, who maybe drive further than i do, especially those who drive out of town more often, might have a higher number. There simply isn't very many days in Calgary where the main roads are anything more than wet. On side roads, you can easily adjust your speed down to a speed that is safe for the conditions.
Driving for the conditions is necessary no matter what kind of tires you have.

Although I'm certainly pro-winter tires (to the point that I'd never go back to all seasons), I don't have an answer for Freeweed's question about when the best time to changeover is. Inevitably there is one big storm in the fall that comes early and freezes the roads up, and I'll still have my summers on. That's always a treat. ;) I aim to change them over in late October and late April.
The spring isn't as much of a crap shoot I find. Usually the spring snowfalls don't accumulate too much on the roads, and summer tires handle the water and even slush quite well. I haven't felt uncomfortable on summer tires for any of our spring snowfalls this year as is hasn't been that cold.
Although YNAT makes a good point about the roads being quite bare in Calgary for much of the year, we do get some cold temperatures, and winter tires stay nice and supple and are handy for the freeze/thaw cycle that we get here all winter long. I don't feel that my winter tires are for snow, but rather for cold temperatures where the tires get hard and don't grip as well.
And again, YNAT is right about the upfront investment. I have two cars, and each car has a separate set of tires and rims. This makes changeovers nice and easy. The thing is, however, I decided that I would take the initial hit and go that route, but in the long run, the costs are virtually the same as you replace each set half as often as if you drove on them year round, but you have double the sets. The rims are the only "extra" expense. But I fully agree - most people have a problem seeing beyond their current set of tires, in a financial sense.
And I fully agree that no matter what tire, it doesn't replace common sense. A fool on winters is still a fool, especially with the added confidence.
Wow - that was longer than I thought it would be. ;)

There's a "That's what she said" joke, somewhere in there.
My rule of thumb for snow tires is they go on at the start of snowboard season, and come off when the season ends. Any snow that may fall after that isn't going to be around long enough to be an issue.
If I just stayed in Calgary all winter, I probably would stick with all seasons, but as I normally spend the winter chasing snow it's best to be safe than sorry.
Calgarian

Stang touched on the biggest part of seasonal tires, temperature. All seasons get hard when the temperature is cold and don't grip the road quite as well. When the temperature gets too warm, all seasons get too soft and wear out quicker.
The biggest reason I have actual winter tires is for driving on the highway, and going to the mountains in the winter, all seasons just don't cut it I find.
My tires go on Late October / Early May (depending on the weather) and come off around late April / Early May (weather depending again). The biggest issue I have with my summer tires in the snow is my parkade ramp, it's about 15%, so I lose traction near the top and get stuck, once I'm on the road, I can manage.

The solution is to have 3 sets of tires. Winter tires from november 1st to april 1. All seasons from april 1st to may 31st, and sept 15th to october 31st. and summer tires from june 1st to september 15th.
That way for the seasons that are close to 100% cold snowy ice #&*$, or Great warm sunny days, you have the right tires. and for the few months that are neither here nor there, you have a set of tires that are neither here or there.
Or you can get an Audi, Quattro actually works by hovering the car above any road condition, using an anti-gravity system to make sure the vehicle has complete control in all conditions! HAHA

I had to buy new non-winter tires about 6 weeks ago, and actually decided on a set of all-seasons rather than summer tires; My thinking was that since this vehicle is what I use to get to my work, I wouldn't be stranded if it snowed in May... which has proved prophetic. The all-seasons are by no means as good as my winters but you know, at least you can deal. Meanwhile someone I know who put their summer tires on had a hell of a time during last month's snow storm.
In a more reliable place (weather-wise) I'd do winter then summer, but given that this is Calgary, and given that I'm driving a Honda Civic, not a sports car or beemer, this was the best compromise.

I have winter tires, but mandating winter tire use is not a substitute for proper winter road maintenance. Even if 90% of drivers had winter tires, it only takes one car driving slowly to slow down miles of traffic. The other issue is that there simply are not enough tire shops in this city to handle the current volume of winter tire changeover. I had to wait almost 2 weeks last fall to get my appointment to have my tires installed. This fall, I have the tires on rims and will try to do the changeover myself, but not everyone has that option.

I don't think it was the headline in the printed edition. I read it on page four of the City and Life (or whatever) section at Starbucks this morning as that was the only part of the paper I could find.
I understand the marathon attracts a lot of out of towners who view it as an easy (flat) qualifier track for other races. The forecast for tomorrow morning is for snow. Kind of embarassing for the city.

Wondering if anyone has any inside information and/or hearsay on Orange Lofts? I'm currently looking at buying a unit there and things seem to be mostly in order but since the crowd on here tends to be rather informed/connected on these topics: Is there anything specific I should be watching out for with that building? Any thoughts greatly appreciated.

I have a few friends that live in the building, both seem to really like the building. I haven't heard any issues with the building or anything, and things really seem to be shaping up with the rejuvenation of the area.

I just tried a preview, it seems much easier to me. Might be an extra click but at least you don't have to load another page.

Yeah, I'm really liking the little map on the side. I too geotag all of my photos. Though with some of them I can't remember exactly where I took them, so I just put them in the city I took them in.

I'm not sure I could ever quit Facebook. It's great for keeping in touch with friends on other continents. Also, I'm moving to St. John's soon, and communicating with family and friends back home is much cheaper online than over the phone.

Now that is a sad statement. Your only options are phone vs. Facebook?! Yeah, I realize that a lot of people are so clueless as to not be aware of any other option, but it's still sad.
For the record, I have not, or ever will set up a Facebook account. Totally pointless to someone like me, who'd rather keep most of my life private.

Anyone know of someone offering combined home inspection and document review services and a good reputation? Seems wasteful to pay for both services where there is some overlap...

It's sad that for so many people, communication options have been defined as "phone" or "facebook". The internet provides a multitude of ways of keeping in touch - yet you're out of touch without a facebook account. I knew it would come to this when they let all those AOL people out on the internet :D

Ah, well my dad doesn't have high speed access, so video chat is out of the question. I only know two or three people that use Skype, so that would be pretty useless for me. With Facebook I can share photos, send messages to multiple people, and chat all on one site. Seems rather convenient to me.
I am also friends with a few SSPers who are no longer active on the forum. Without FB I would have no way of communicating with them anymore.
Perhaps other methods of communication suit you better, but for me, Facebook works best.

So I'm getting tired for Shaw bumping up my bill every few months for no reason at all and am thinking of making the switch to the furry cuddly Telus side.
Are there any forumers that have telus that could tell me how the service is for high speed internet and HD tv?
Edit:

No kidding. I have always loved Starchoice, but since the rebranding out monthly bill has gone up over $10/month. Now, I'm finally moving out in August, so in won't matter to me, but I'm really pushing my mom to consider Telus TV (I loathe Bell). TSN HD was free on Starchoice, now it must be part of a package. I think Telus has more free HD channels, and more High Def all together.
We already have Telus DSL internet, and I have no complaints with it. If there's ever an issue, they have always been able to help over the phone (once you finally get to a real person, but that's the same with anyone these days).

I'm not entirely sure you could get telus TV either. When they installed mine they had to mess around with both the neighbourhood box and the box on my house. check that out.
The good news is the price is right for sure, I have two boxes, and HD PVR and a standard def box both of which I was able to get for free after some basic haggling (IE- Give me this for free or I won't sign up.) I have no complaints about the internet, which I've used for years and they've been bumping up the speed pretty regularly.
If it's available in your area, Mediaroom, their new Microsoft system, gives you a triple tuner PVR that you can control from your other boxes as well. Sunnyside hasn't gotten the infrastructure update to support this. Media Room systems have much better SD picture quality than the old system, which is my only real complaint about it.

Well, good then. I didn't realize that they had rebranded mediaroom as Optik. They will give you deep discounts if you are persistent.
Also, the over-the-phone tech support is very helpful, useful and 24 hours. It's a completely separate call centre for TV which has been great.

Never tried their TV but every TV-over-phone installation that I've seen has been terrible quality. Mind you, it's been a couple of years since I've seen one, so maybe things have improved.
As for Internet - if you're not a heavy user, or non-technical, you may never notice a difference. Personally I find Telus Internet to be far slower than Shaw. It's still "high speed" but the highest speed on Shaw is waaaay faster than Telus. Plus, Telus (at least last time I was forced to use them) locks your account down to one MAC address (network hardware ID) so if you ever change computers or routers (this depends on your personal setup), you may be in for a really annoying help desk call.
As I like to swap around what faces my Internet on a regular basis, I found Telus absolutely intolerable. If you're not a geek like me (or if you didn't much understand what I said), this is likely a non-issue. Most people probably swap routers every 5 years or so, so it wouldn't be a big deal.

From what ive read the telus speed is comparable to my shaw. the one thing i am worried about is if im torrenting really heavy and watching high def....
on the phone with shaw right now, lady laughed at me when i said i want to disconnect :) now shes throwing together a retention plan.
Update:
Because I am a good customer since 2007, and have never been offered a deal, I am now getting my bill essentially halved. My $150 Internet/TV bill is now a $90 Internet/TV/Phone bill.

:previous: The squeaky wheel gets the grease, that's for sure.
It's one of my biggest annoyances with customer service these days. Be a loyal paying customer and get pissed on. Scream and moan, and the world's your oyster.
I should threaten to cancel Shaw and see what they do (although I only have them for Internet).
Oh, and Shaw is most definitely much faster than Telus, at least on the high end. I don't think Telus has 10mbit service, let alone the even higher speeds you can get into with Shaw. I could be wrong though.
