It almost certainly won't (I can't see 90% of commercial vehicles being anywhere near cleaner than even the most polluting car).
I always figure commercial vehicles get a bye on this, because while it's possible (and reasonably affordable) to fix cars - there's just no way to make a dump truck non-polluting to this degree. It's just something we accept, because while many/most of us can go without our cars, society would collapse outright without heavy equipment.
Maybe I'm wrong on this; it sure seems like commercial vehicles pollute like crazy in California. Maybe semis at least have to have some inspection - but then they'd just run rigs from out of province anyway.

Yes the feasibility of cleaning up things like Caterpillers is one thing I had doubts about. I believe, and correct me if I'm wrong, that emissions testing in other jurisdictions involve not set limits, but instead making sure vehicles are within a certain range of their new-car emissions at the time of manufacture. In this case diesel trucks and equipment could still be tested, but just to make sure they're in spec, not to try to make them cleaner than originally intended.
That said, if 100 in-spec heavy equipment vehicles pollute as much as 100,000 slightly out of spec gas cars, the usefulness of the whole plan should probably be debated.

Hmm. That definitely was not the case when emissions testing first happened in places like California. There were certain limits set on NEW vehicles that took years of R&D to reach. If that's all we're doing in Alberta, well I guess it's a start, but not really going to do very much. Most people here drive cars under 10 years old anyway.
What we need to do something about is everyone and their dog driving their fucking F350 to get groceries. One of those is probably 10x as polluting as my tiny Civic-wannabe, never mind the fact that it inevitably takes up two (often three) parking spaces and therefore contributes that much worse to sprawl.

I just looked at the Vancouver aircare program and it states:
"AirCare’s maximum allowable emission standards are set to identify vehicles that are emitting significantly higher emissions than a normal vehicle of the same age and design. The emission standards shown on the Vehicle Inspection Report are based upon the vehicle's model year, weight and engine size, plus a significant allowance for normal variations in engine performance.
A well-tuned vehicle of any model year with its original emission equipment in place and functioning correctly will easily pass the AirCare standards . An average passing reading represents the average emissions level achieved by vehicles in the same age group, type and engine displacement as your vehicle. These are the types of readings that your vehicle is capable of and should be considered the target for a normal operating vehicle. If your vehicle is operating as designed, your vehicle's readings should be close to or better than the average passing reading ."

Weird, random question: has anyone else noticed Google acting really crappy lately? From time to time when using the main search page (google.com/ca), nothing comes back. It just displays the first page with my query in the box, but no results. No matter how many times I click "search" ... nothing.
I've been noticing this on and off for a couple of weeks now (seems to have co-incided with the "realtime search" they brought in a while back) - at home, at work, different operating systems, different browsers. I thought maybe I was going insane but some of my cow-orkers have noticed this as well.
I can't believe that THE major website could be having problems like this with nary a peep from the tech media. Is this completely isolated to myself and close associates?
I find that going into the "advanced search" still works, so it's more of an annoyance, but still... surely someone else has seen this behaviour?!?

I have a love/hate relationship with iGoogle - I love how I can put a bunch of useful gadgets and newsbytes on the page, I hate how much all that stuff slows down the page when I want to do a search.
I really, really want Google to turn off auto redirect for www.google.* to assume I want iGoogle. If I'm typing it into a web browser, I'm trying to find something, and I don't want to load my iGoogle stuff.
Assuming you have a Google account (not sure it works without) you can turn off Google instant predictions if it's not your thing. I'm still out to lunch on that one.

Societal dystopia absoluetly! That's why I prefaced it with urban - the visuals of the dense urban landscape, the graphics of the buildings and integrated manmade infrastructure is "utopia" to some. The society it represents on the other hand is not - unless of course you're part of the managers/planners class!

We have several months of 15-25 weather. Our "worst" summer according to most people saw less precipitation and fewer cloudy days than most Canadian cities get in an average summer. From the official beginning of summer through August, we had exactly 3 days where the mercury didn't hit at least 15. I know everyone talks like this past summer was somehow wintery, but it really wasn't all that bad.
I'd say we're doing pretty well. Now, if you want to re-edit your post to say "Blast-furnace-like heat...", then yeah. We lack that. Oh, and our past week has sucked donkey balls. :D

No, it was the Canadian Broadcast Standards Council which is an independent, non-governmental organization to administer standards for Canada's private broadcasters.
From their website:
With the support of the Canadian Association of Broadcasters (CAB) (http://www.cab-acr.ca/) and the approval of the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) (http://www.crtc.gc.ca/), but without the heavy club or formalities of government sanctions, the Council promotes self-regulation in programming matters by Canada's private sector broadcasters.

I've wondered for years how that song could get away with being played on our oh so conservative radio stations. To me its a relic of the times, and even though its an offensive word, I dont think banning it achieves anything.
The next song that will probably get banned is Lou Reeds "take a walk on the wild side" with his not so PC use of the word "coloured".

I'm really torn about this. On one hand I am a proponent of freedom of speech. On the other hand if Money for Nothing used the word *igger instead would anyone be up in arms about it's banning? As for 'coloured', it's considered archaic rather than a slur.
Also, it's not actually banned, just playing it with that word intact is. Radio stations censor out words of songs all day every day already.

I think there's more important things to be concerned about. For instance the school official in either Ontario or Quebec who recently banned a Gay & Straight student group and then compared gays to nazis.
I find that far more offensive than some 25 year old pop song.
Why havent' we baned "Hey Joe" by Jimi Hendrix as it could be considered promoting violence towards women.

Did anyone else catch the guy in the white labcoat with the message "Nenshi is trying to brainwash you" written on the back, standing on the corner of 7 Ave & 2 ST, around 17:15 today?
I saw a picture of them on beyond.ca. The picture was taken from the back but it looked like that father and son team that hang out poorly worded flyers near Eau Claire.

I only saw the "dad". I wanted to take a picture of him, but common sense got the best of me.

They're pretty much harmless.
One year they were standing by Eau Claire and I can't remember who they were supporting but they had en election sign with them. As I walked past, I mentioned that they probably weren't doing that candidate any favours. The son looked at the sign for a second and then at his dad and said I was probably right. All 3 of us laughed.

I've used Calgary Junk Removal a few times. Cheaper than 1-800-GJ. Vince is a great guy, always on time and doesn't make you schedule a window. I haven't had him remove appliances but I'm sure he can provide you a price over email.

I went with these guys, and you're right, nice guys, and on time.
I got them to go to my folks place by Southcentre mall, haul a washer and dryer up the stairs from the basement and then drive them over to my place near 16th ave and centre st N, then they hauled another washer and dryer up the stairs out of my basement, plus a fridge that was in my back porch, and THEN they put the washer and dryer from my folks back down my stairs into the laundry room. $300.

No, CTV Calgary was interviewing him while he was surfing SSP. I'm guessing he has an account here.
I know who he is.
Does he look like this guy?

He truly is. His writing initially comes off as pretty offensive, but once you realize he makes fun of himself more than anything, it's pure awesome.
The follow-up book isn't quite as good, but has some decent stories. The movie was just stupid enough to keep my attention.

Does anyone have any opinions on the community of Silverado? I and the wife are strongly considering putting in an offer on a house in Silverado and wanted to know if anyone had any good or bad words to say about the community? One thing I've noticed is it has no local amenities (yet), you have to cross 22x to get to anything, so its not walkable, which is something I am going to miss very much about Bridgeland. I assume eventually there will be at least a commercial area with a gas station, convenience store, and (maybe) a Sobeys or Safeway?
I checked on Calgary.ca and googled, and I couldn't find any master area development plan or the eventual basic build out, the best I could find was some vague referential maps in the South Macleod Regional Planning Policy documents.

The South Macleod Regional Planning Policy can be found here (http://www.calgary.ca/DocGallery/BU/planning/pdf/south_macleod_trail_rpp/south_macleod_trail_rpp_one.pdf), but its for the area south of Silverado. Silverado is actually part of the vaguely named "Southwest Community 'A' and employment centre/mixed-use Area Structure Plan", which can be found here (http://www.calgary.ca/DocGallery/BU/planning/pdf/southwest_community_employment_centre_asp/sw_community_a_asp_one.pdf)
There will be a commercial area on the far south edge of the development, centred along Sheriff King Street SW, and thats pretty much it. There is more retail/commercial in the ASP area, but its all on the other side of the railway tracks along Macleod Trail.

Never, EVER assume this. Eventually there will be a commercial area, yeah probably. However the final form may be complete shit.
It's amazing how many communities have zero convenience stores or gas stations, while the neighbouring community has several of each. Planning? What's that?
Plan on living very car dependent for at least 5 years to avoid disappointment. If it gets built sooner (and better), then you're gold. But assume the worst, because it happens in this city a lot.
