If one wanted to sit in on a criminal trial, how would one find out when and where the trial would be occuring?

^Not sure the answer to that.

Learned something today. After quite awhile of checking the skybar section of SSP, and seeing the "coffee talk thread" there, I never checked it out because I thought it was literally about coffee. I've never heard of "coffee talk" meaning idle chat or "offtopic" discussion. I may check out the one in the skybar now.

I've never heard of "coffee talk" meaning idle chat or "offtopic" discussion.

It's an Albany expression.

I've never heard of it either, and would pretty much completely ignore a thread titled this. I do see the mods are being open minded and friendly about the subject though, and allowing us our own "coffee talk" threads that don't have the word "coffee" in the subject.

Just to keep us Uticans happy.

I don't mean going picture nuts like the obscure thread, just stuff to stimulate conversation.

Okay, seeing as this isn't of enough importance to be in it's own thread, I'll ask you all: Where should I work this summer? A brief description of me follows as so.

I'm a 16-year-old male, with a rather dashing appearance. (An acquired taste, perhaps?)
I know too much about too little, mainly photography (As shown by my equipment) and hares. (The hare thread..) I know stuff about computers too. (Built the one I'm typing on. Quad core, 8GB RAM, etc)
I live in the SW. Easy access to route 101.

Enough of that tripe, here's some places I've been thinking of:

Future Shop. I applied in October or something and even got a voicemail to schedule a phone interview. But Bell decided it would be fun to delete my messages after 5 days. Hooray. I don't think they're hiring any more.
Black's Photo. My sister suggested this, it wouldn't be bad.
The dump. I don't know if they would hire me, but I wouldn't dislike driving a bulldozer or something weird like that.
The airport. Again I doubt they'd hire me. Maybe I'd shoot birds if they do that, or I'd just do some other labour.

Places I would like to work:
Mattress testing facility.
Quality control at a bacon factory.
Some sort of photo studio.
Rabbit store.

Places I would not like to work:
Webber Academy

Gimme some ideas, I need some money and my resume is a bit hungry.

Have you considered phoning, or dropping in to the courthouse? Trials are open to the public so I would assume they would tell you if you asked. If not, lie and tell them you're press.

It was the Midwest Coffee Talk thread that started this coffee thing....

At one point in the skybar someone was surprised to see a thread that was up to 8 pages talking about coffee! At least until they clicked into that thread for the first time.

coffee talk is like a coffee break, neither is neccesarily related to coffee. My coffee breaks are never related to coffee; I don't drink that stuff.

Coffee talk refers to the general discussion you have while meeting with people at a coffee shop or something. There is a local publication called Superior Coffee Talk that provides jokes, anecdotes and advertisements for people to stimulate a coffee talk that is distributed around the region. I used to get them all the time.

Maybe coffee talk is a midwest thing? The skit that article refers to is basically what coffee talks are. People sitting around and talking about stuff while driving coffee or whatever.

^Yeah I'm familiar with the light-hearted chatty nature of conversation over hot beverages. I'd just never heard the term used regularly, especially in the context of an internet forum. Threads of the same type on internet forums I've seen before are typically called things like "off-topic thread," "random thoughts/questions/discussion thread," or "idle conversation thread." SSP is the first time I've ever seen or heard "coffee talk" refer to conversation consisting of discussion started by one-off comments on a random topic. Not saying there's anything wrong with it. It's just that when I had seen the "coffee talk thread" in the skybar section, and being familiar with the disproportionate amount of discussion actually about coffee on SSP (compared to other forums or groups of people), I just passed it off as a thread actually about coffee. I don't think that's such an odd assumption to make, and I wouldn't be surprised if several Calgary forumers won't check this thread because they think it's about coffee.

Anyway, not saying it needs to be changed or anything. I just thought it was an odd name to have for such a thread.

----------

Anyway, here's a topic of conversation. Gang-related crime in Calgary. Obviously the media has blown it out of proportion, but it is a growing situation (on the scale of the last 5 years) nonetheless. Thoughts?

Maybe I'm just not bohemian enough, but chatting in coffee shops isn't something many of my peers ever do. And these days it's all about the Mac laptop crowd anyway as Bigtime points out.

Anyway, I can confirm that it's not a ubiquitous phrase. I can also confirm that I'm one of those horrible people that doesn't spend their life on SSP and therefore I haven't seen every single non-Canada thread. Heck, I rarely venture outside of Local:Calgary these days.

"near" is an interesting word when you live by the mountains. Places "near" Calgary did in fact get 2 feet of snow, if by "near" you mean within 100km.

No one in shouting distance from Calgary got any accumulation though.

Besides, 2 feet, or 60cm of snow is really just 60mm of rain. ie: a dry day in most of BC. :P

mersar
04-29-2009, 04:20 PM
Well I'd go with closer then 100km, I know that not this past storm a few days ago but the one before left about 2 feet in Bragg Creek which is only 30km from the edge of Calgary. This past storm did leave some accumulation out that way though, coming into Cochrane and looking south last night you could see the ground color fade to white in that direction.

freeweed
04-29-2009, 07:34 PM
30km towards the mountains, yes.

The point (that people not from here don't realize) is that Calgary sits right on the threshold of the Rocky Mountains. It may seem prairie-like but we're at a very high elevation for a city this far north and we're very very close to places that experience winter conditions 9 months or more out of the year.

Which is very different from having 2 feet of snow on the ground every May, which is what the perception often is.

Folks from BC who live "close to the mountains" often don't realize that the mountains here are entirely different than the coastal ranges, in sheer elevation, climate, flora/fauna, etc.

People also don't always realize that directly south of Calgary actually brings you closer to the mountains - a lot closer in some cases. Pincher Creek is almost directly south of us but it's right on the footsteps of the mountains. They got more than a foot yesterday, so people naturally assume that if you move 200km NORTH from that, there'd be snow.

Which isn't necessarily the case.

Like I said, "near" is an interesting term when applied here. Not that anyone who actually lives here should need to be told that, but I'm always surprised - I know folks who've lived in Calgary 20 years and have never made it to Waterton - a straight shot south that lands you in a whole different climate.

This thread is now my most favouritest.

Check this out:

Earlier today Brookfield Properties was advised of a rumour involving the swine influenza in the Bankers Hall Complex. Upon investigation we have discovered that the child of an employee in the building has a confirmed case of swine influenza contracted while in Mexico. This employee has no symptoms but has been sent home by the employer as a precaution, until further notice. Janitorial staff will be conducting extra sanitising of this employees work area, floor, and washrooms this evening - again as a precaution only.

Please be reminded once again that the Public Health Agency of Canada advises vigilance and good common sense sanitary practices. Good health habits to help prevent the flu include:

1. Avoid contact with people who are sick
2. Stay home when you are sick
3. Cover your mouth and nose when coughing or sneezing
4. Wash your hands frequently
5. Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth as much as possible

Symptoms usually include those similar to seasonal influenza (flu) including headache, chills and cough followed by fever, loss of appetite, muscle aches and fatigue, runny nose, sneezing, watery eyes and throat irritation. Nausea, vomiting and diarrhea may occur in adults as well as in children. In more severe cases, or in people with chronic conditions, complications such as pneumonia may develop. (Source: The Public Health Agency of Canada)

If any of your employees present the symptoms described above, advise them to contact their own doctor's office for further advice and direction. In the unlikely case that any of your employees are, in fact, diagnosed with this form of the virus, please advise Building Management so that appropriate measures can be undertaken to mitigate any spread of the virus.

OMG we're all going to die!!! Everyone panic!!!

To put this in perspective, The Centers for Disease Control estimates 36,000 people die annually in the United States from the flu. That's the regular flu, not the fancy swine flu or Mexican flu as they like to call it in Israel.

I'll start off by asking a weird question.

If one wanted to sit in on a criminal trial, how would one find out when and where the trial would be occuring?

Just go down to the courthouse and there will be a list of trials on the docket. You can sit in any ony trial you like...and can come an go as you please. You might not be able to sit in on a high-profile case (Paul Bernardo types), but for the most part the courtrooms are deserted.

Sit in on one, and if it isn't very interesting, move on to the next one. You can usually find a good one. My buddy and I used to go down there when we were in University...it was good, cheap entertainment.

Who's not supporting the Canucks?

My entire spring social calendar revolves around "when the last Canadian team is knocked out of the playoffs".

frinkprof

^Ha. You might not like some of the responses in the Great Canadian Playoff Thread then.

Post I, and others, responded to:

To be honest, i find it disheartening how few Canadians outside of Vancouver are cheering for the Canucks, Canada's last remaining team. I am a Canuck fan, but during the playoffs i cheer for any remaining Canadian teams until the end. Especially if my home team is no longer in it, such as years past.

Honestly, shame on you.

My response:

The whole "Canada's Team" or "Cheer for the last Canadian team" thing is something pushed by the Canadian sports media, most notably CBC to sustain ratings during the playoffs. The trend for people to cheer for the last Canadian team, as I recall, started up in the mid to late 90s in a time when some of the 6 remaining Canadian teams were in danger of moving. This danger does not exist today and if anything the NHL needs Canada and Canadian teams.

If you follow that principle, that's fine, I wouldn't call shame on others for not doing so though. Would a Cup win be good for Vancouver? Absolutely. Would it be good for Canada? I doubt it. I'm sure there would be a couple days of "The Cup Returns to Canada" news stories, but after that, the bragging rights belong to Vancouver and their fans. Yonge Street, 17th Avenue, Ste. Catherine, Whyte Ave., and umm... Kanata won't shut down for a party if Vancouver wins the cup.

I could get behind Ottawa and Montreal, aside from my favourite Calgary. Oilers, Canucks, and Leafs? Never. Go Chicago.

Several Edmonton and Calgary forumers replied as well saying they were not cheering for the Canucks.

In response to those sentiments, a couple of Vancouver forumers claimed that BC "must be the most patriotic place in Canada." Right.

frink, interesting opinion, but we'll just have to agree to disagree. ;)

Some of us have been cheering for Canadian teams a lot longer than others, and we'll leave it at that. Your perception may have changed in the 90s though - as Canada lost one more franchise than it gained 2 entire cities lost their home team and their fans never really settled.

I will say one thing though - there's a whole range of fan, from "only ever cheer for one team because that's who I picked when I was 8 and I was born there", to "I love the sport so much I can actually cheer for a lot of different players and teams". And many shades of grey in between.

Those of us who swing towards the latter have always been here, we're just nowhere near as vocal as the "OMG you bandwagon traitor, how can you cheer for anyone but the ONE TRUE TEAM" types.

I guess I'm a stereotypical bandwagonner in many people's eyes - I attend 15-20 live games a season, I watch another 100-150 on TV, and each round of the playoffs who I'm cheering for may change completely. The guys I loved in the first round may be my most hated enemy in the next.

I watch, and follow, a LOT of hockey. When you really truly love a sport, it's not about "your team" anymore. It's about loving the game itself, and the rivalries are just one small component of it. In my mind, people who stop watching the playoffs just because "their team" got knocked out aren't really hockey fans at all - they're just fans of a logo.

And I'll STILL cheer for any Canadian team (except the Leaves) over an American team. Stuff that in your pipe, Bettman.

In any case, Chicago probably has more Canadian players and more native Albertans than Van. Also, Chicago is a damn good team. I'm not bitter towards them the way I was San Jose, who I knew would lose the next round anyway and basically had the refs int heir pocket the whole time.

Go Hawks!

It's a laugh fest in that thread right now.

Hey Innersoul, do you cheer for Liverpool if Man U gets the boot? Same shit different sport!

You will never hear me raise my voice for a scouser unless it's to tell 'em to sod off!

Truth is that I absolutely hate the Canucks, moreso than Edmonton, can't bring myself to cheer for them at all.

What kills me about Canucks fans is how cockey they are (obviously not all). But on Facebook I always have friends who are nucks fans write stupid S%$t on my wall. ALWAYS. It's like Canucks fans feel the need to defend themselves constantly by trash talking as a means of legitimizing their team.

As a friend of Innersoul's on Facebook I can confirm his comments about his nuck fan friends. They always have to throw their terrible two cents in.

I think that might say more about his friends than all Canuck fans as a whole.

Just the other day I got into a huge argument with a guy from (where else) Edmonton - his claim was that all Flames fans are the biggest haters in the world, and people in Calgary are incapable of cheering for other Canadian teams. Unlike every other city where everyone gets behind whatever Canadian team goes the furthest every year.

I just smiled and nodded. Again, it said a lot more about his friends than anything else.

Don't judge a city from your select few friends - and conversely don't pre-judge your friends based on the city they're from.

PS: Canuck fans are just insecure because they're the least successful Canadian franchise, ever. Even the Sens have done as much as the Canucks, and they've been around not even half as long. And I say this as a Jets fan, who formerly held that title.

On a random note, my friend got swine flu today. Plus I saw some hares at U of C on my way to The Den, they seem to be a lot more friendly than the ones around here. I'll take up my camera when I'm on study break.

Nice work. Kudos. So you're with iStock?

Thanks -- yes, we're with iStock, although my group is within the Getty Images structure and not directly related to the iStockphoto website or business. Nonetheless I've been with iStock for almost eight years in some form or another.

I hear ya man. I tried to qualify my statement by saying that ALL Canuck fans aren't like that, I certainly recognize that. I wouldn't even say that the people who message me on FB are friends other than the FB sense of the word. I just find it random how the people who are Canucks fans on FB come out of the woodwork to talk trash on my page! :haha:

This is too funny. I'd post this in Skybar, but it'll piss of Cleveland forumers, which I don't intend to. It's just hilarious.

The Cleveland Tourism Board gave me 14 million dollars about 8 months ago to make a promotional video to bring people to Cleveland. As usual, I waited till the last minute and I ended up having to shoot and edit it in about an hour yesterday afternoon. I probably should have invested more time.

Hey anyone have an idea where one might find a large selection of peel & stick (I know I know) tiles in this city? Looking for some cheap black & white checkerboard flooring.

I love it when my home town makes the internet. I wonder if any of our Edmonton compatriots were parked in front of the Nexopia offices on the 5th of May.

^^ Ha ha. From the comments:

Not surprising. The last time I drove a Nitro, i felt like a jerk too.

Calgary made Jalopnik a while a go when the owner of ZR was arrested for being dumb.

Personally I think he's more a douche than a wanker, but I can see your point of view.

I don't know if anyone here listens to the Fan960, but some of the Mike Richard's skits are pretty funny. did anyone hear this morning's skit of Roberto Luongo talking to Mike Cammalleri?

Do they link any of those Mike Richard's skits online afterwards?

I usually only tune into the FAN for Jim Rome when I am in the car during his show.

^Yup. Hilarious. You can listen to the skits here:

http://www.fan960.com/onair/richards/

My favourites are the calls to Miikka Kiprusoff, the Bob Cole skits, Fake Jim Rome, Lovie Smith, Steve Armitage, Sylvan Lake, and many others. Some aren't that great, but definitely pretty good considering he does almost all the voices and there's a new one almost every day.

I listen to the Fan960 in the morning quite often, wasn't listing this morning though.

Here's a few older skits of Mike Richards doing Roberto Luongo.

speaking of radio bits, anybody remeber the 'Sergio Masterbaker' ones from the 90's? There were some hilarious ones. I think the guy who did them was Roger Rhodes, can't remember which station.

I don't know who did them, but it was on C-Jay 92.

Time for a random question: Someone I know lives on an acreage between Cochrane and Calgary. They have 40 acres and I have no clue if they're in city limits but they live on a Range Road. Given the size of their land, would it be legal to take out a non-restricted firearm (I'm thinking semi-auto .22LR) and bang away at stuff? (Not hares.) It would sure beat going all the way to the CRPC, and the change of atmosphere would be nice.

The answer is likely found in the MD of Rockyview Firearms Bylaw (http://www.mdrockyview.ab.ca/Uploaded/C-5759-2003.pdf)
