Reminds me a bit of Tokyo. Coincidentally, Sao Paulo has the largest Japanese population outside of Japan.

Anyways, awesome shots. Sao Paulo is high on my list of places to visit.

That´s true! Few people know that we have a big japanese comunity, but São Paulo has a chinese and south korean comunity too. There are something like 200.000 chineses and 50.000 south koreans living in São Paulo.

There are two districts covering theses comunities: Liberdade - our china and japanese town and Bom Retiro - our Koreantown.

I promise take pictures from both and show to you soon :)

holy cow Tchello! What a f*cking great thread!

You are a great photographer, and I like that you take a lot of pics of people and how they interact with the urban enviroment. Threads that show ONLY buildings are so sterile imho!

I dont remember having seen this thread at SSC! Give us SSPers a little more time to savory these three São Paulo threads before you post your other threads

(for those who dont know, Tchello, on SSC, is on a quest to take photos of every neighborhood in the city)

Also, keep answering the questions, although I find hard to believe Sampa has 200 thousand chinese! Are you sure of that?

Thanks for the photos! :)

Can you imagine my excitement when I left the park thread you created and immediately found this one? For a foreign architect who is unused to seeing urban pics of Brazil this is sheer joy. I am awed by the flamboyant experimentation and variety that characterizes much of the Modern architecture built between the 50's and the 70's. In America during the same period Modernism's quest was for complete neutrality, leading towards a very plain and homogeneous expression that could easily be copied from building to building. I appreciate your focus on architecture, the space of the street, and the mobility of the city. Please keep these tours rolling!

Thanks Trantor!!!:)

Correcting what I wrote about the population of Chinese in sao paulo
, there are 200 thousand Chinese living in Brazil and 150 thousand in São Paulo. This number has been issued by the Chinese Cultural Association in Brazil :D

Thank you so much holladay!

In the 60s and seventies there was what we call the "Brazilian economic miracle" when happened the beginning of the industrialization of our country, coming from the car manufacturers and the creation of Petrobras and other major companies.

This economic time has brought huge development of the two largest cities, Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo, besides the construction of Brasilia.

So there are many modernist buildings in Brazil, they are reflections of that golden era of economic development.

Today we are crossing, even amid the global economic crisis, a very rapid economic development, but unfortunately the new projects in architecture are more reflecting the industrial minimalism of the decor magazines, neoclassical fake and poorly done and some interesting comercial buildings

Much agreed... Beautiful job with the thread!!

I must say, Sao Paulo is definitely on my list of places to visit. I love the mix of cultures... so "American"... that seems to be evident in most every major Brazilian city.

Do a lot of people speak or know English there? If I visit, I would obviously have to know Portugese, but is it more like Germany (where most people understand English in the major cities) or Mexico City (where it's less than half)?

More like Mexico. Although if half the mexicans can understand english, I would say Mexico City is more like Germany than São Paulo :haha:

Of course, WHERE YOU ARE in the city probably makes a big difference. At Paulista Avenue its probably very easy to find english speaking people.

Check out that THE AMAZING RACE episode in São Paulo (where they fly in helicopters above the city).
