I thought we could have a place to discuss everything Calgary Stampede 2009 here.

Do you love it? Like it? Hate it?

I'll get us started with an article from the Herald today on some new additions planned for this year:

Calgary Stampede puts fresh spin on midway fun

By Deborah Tetley, Calgary Herald May 8, 2009 7:15 AM

A venue well known for staples such as mini-donuts, corn dogs and beef-on-a-bun will offer visitors even more bizarre fare this year, with wheat grass juice, potatoes that look like they've been hit by a tornado and battered, deep fried jelly beans on the menu.

Rodeo cowboys and cowgirls, meanwhile, will be trying for a taste of a record $2 million in prize money, and the more laid-back set can sip white wine by waterfalls.

These are just some of the new additions announced Thursday as the Calgary Stampede gears up for The Greatest Outdoor Show on Earth, July 3 to 12.

"It's going to be an all-around great event again this year," said Stampede spokesman Doug Fraser.

One of the more unique attractions, he said, is the Rocktagon, which will make its Canadian debut here. Free with admission, it's a "digital playground" of lights and sounds and music.

"It's sensory overload and people are going to love it," Fraser said.

But for the 2009 Stampede to run smoothly, Fraser noted, it needs to hire 3,500 employees looking for a 10-day gig.

Positions include everything from filling pop and flipping burgers to hawking beer and providing security

At noon today, the Stampede will begin accepting online applications, which will be the only means of vying for a job on the grounds.

Given the economic downturn, the Stampede is optimistic the jobs will fill quickly.

"We did well last year when the market was healthier," Fraser said. "We're anticipating a few people will be looking."

The Stampede is expecting a largely "rubber tire" crowd this time, Fraser said, meaning vacationers who are staying closer to home will plan their summer driving trip around making a stop in Calgary.

My wife and I are both born and raised Calgarian's that grew up on the Greatest Outdoor Show on Earth. I will admit that in my early twenty somethings I grew tired of going down to the grounds, but always enjoyed the rodeo or the chuckwagons, and the SUPERDOGS!

We went down last year (since it is so close), and will probably head down again this year.

Growing up in western Canada, it's either the Ex, the Stampede, Klondike Days (or whatever abomination they've renamed it to), etc. It's the same traveling carnival with the same awesome bingo tent and the same mini donuts. And it's all way, way overpriced.

And I wouldn't miss it for the world. I've already had a couple occasions to visit more than one in a single year (Ex and Stampede, for me). My friends think I'm nuts.

On a non-midway note, what's everyone seeing in terms of corporate cutbacks this year? I've already seen 2 major (I'm talking thousands of people) breakfasts be canceled, supposedly due to spending cutbacks. Considering a lot of events aren't announced for a while, I wonder if this is just the tip of the iceberg and we might see a rather subdued Stampede this year.

I know a lot of this is missed by those that don't work downtown or for an O&G company, but still - I can see a lot of expense accounts being cut off this year if what I've seen is any indication. And a lot of people used to get that, even outside of O&G.

what I want to know is what happened to the vip pass you could buy for nashville north? That tent is the best place to drink during stampede, and 4 hour lineups....suck

Might be going this year. There are usually some decent bands playing the Coke Stage, but that venue is too small, and you have to get there 3 hours before any show if you want to see. One other reason to go down is all the girls in wranglers and cowboy hats, don't ask me why, but that's always really hot.

I accidentally voted "no" on the poll because I thought I was out of town again that week... Oops.

The last couple of years I have been unintentionally absent from the Stampede due to other travel plans, so I'll probably end up going this year. If nothing else I'll provide accompaniment for my wife who enjoys is more than I do. :)

I have a bit of a love/hate thing with the Stampede. Growing up it was never a big deal, and my parents are still indifferent to the Stampede, at best. I used to cringe at everyone's one-a-year western duds because it seems like such a forced, unnatural thing. Kind of like a really bad costume party. Now I just laugh at it. I do, however, like to see the city come alive. There are so many things going on and the city has a special kind of buzz during Stampede (in more ways than one!). I like seeing the out-of-province plates experiencing our city (and spending their money here, obviously).

My wife, on the other hand, just loves it. We probably go every other year (on average), and parts of the Stampede I really enjoy. We'll usually try and catch a show at the Coca-Cola stage if someone worth seeing is playing. Sloan, The Odds, Treble Charger (IIRC), Matthew Good... all back in the day were good ones. This year... haven't seen much yet.

Then on to Superdogs usually. The exhibition/product showcase stuff is actually pretty interesting. The infomercial-type of thing gets old quickly, but it is a bit of a spectacle that you don't get to see every day.

Never been big on rides, especially now. For some reason my stomach can't handle it as well as it did in my early-mid twenties. It could have been the time that the door on the zipper came unlatched mid-ride and was being held on my the smallest of metal pins. Or the time that, on that ride where you go around like a ferris wheel in your own little capsule and you can spin it upside-down and such - the steering wheel thing came off into my hands. Apparently not a critical piece of the rise because a) our capsule thing didn't fall, and b) the Conklin guy just threw it underneath the ride after we handed it to him on the way out.

Actually, this year I might do the grandstand and chuckwagons - haven't done that in a few years.

I haven't been in a few years (last time I went was only because my brother managed to win a set of 4 tickets for the rodeo plus lunch in the Lazy S restaurant in the Grandstand). Used to go every few years when I was younger, mostly just to wander around for day then take in the evening events in the grandstand.

That said, I likely will be going this year, especially if my brother once again manages to get us free admission passes since he has some stuff to do on the grounds as part of the WorldSkills competition leadup. Plus this year will likely be the first time I attend the parade in person, usually have never had a chance but the entire family currently is planning to since my brother is in the parade this year.

I'm not a parade fan (read: I can't stand attending them) but in 2004 I got dragged into going to the Stampede parade by a very, very cute friend.

They had many of the Flames (and Sutter) all jersey'd up and riding horses. Listening to entire city blocks shouting GO FLAMES GO was awe-inspiring.

The rest of the parade sucked though. But man she was cute.

I haven't attended the parade since I was a kid. I have a question about it, do they still have the float that goes by that all the kids can throw their change at?

I always remembered that for some reason, and the street sweepers doing the noble task of cleaning horse shit off the road! :haha:

Overpriced and tacky, yes. But I love Stampede - the most fun time of year to be in Calgary.

I always try to take out of towners to the Chucks and Grandstand show. It is a good time. First weekend of Stampede is great. Parade, night on the town, stampede breakfast, grounds, chucks & show, wet breakfast (woo!), recovery.

Running the first weekend gauntlet for someone from out of town sure leaves an impression on them, that Calgary is certainly on one side of crazy!

Yeah I probably won't go to the parade again until I have kids old enough that they will remember going, or if a close friend or family member is in the parade.

As for going to the grounds, I usually like going. I've missed maybe 5 years of my life. I usually make it to the chuckwagons with my family, which is pretty fun once you get to know a bit about some of the drivers and the family lines in the sport, picking your favourite to win each heat and keeping your eye on them, etc. Other favourites on the grounds are the trade and art shows, Weadickville, Coke Stage (no one I wanted to see last year though, if I recall), and getting mini donuts before calling it a night. I usually allow myself a try at a couple midway games as well. One thing I miss is going down and watching the live CFCN news telecast, which they don't do anymore.

I think the Stampede is a net-positive for Calgary. Obviously it continues to bring the tourism and the associated economic benefits. It usually puts people, especially in the workplace setting, in a good mood and is a good reason to just have some fun. Yeah the branding and such can get tired and hokey, the political clout the Stampede Board has isn't always the best thing, and things like too-cool-for-public-transit-the-rest-of-the-year types trying to figure out an LRT door can be a pain. However most of the negatives only last 10 days and the positives definitely tip the scale.

I have to admit I'm an unabashed whore for those "as seen on TV" type products they shill in the Roundup Centre. We spend easily half our Stampede time in there - especially on the hotter days as it's air conditioned.

Mind you, I don't really buy anything (tempted on the ShamWOW! I must admit, because it has the most awesome name), but a few years back one booth was selling these hammocks made of parachute silk, that folded into the tiniest little bag and weighed about 3/4 of a lb. Incredible thing for camping, especially backcountry. I've since seen them occasionally at regular stores (MEC had some once) but at the time I'd never seen them.

The artists' area is also pretty cool. There's some amazing sculpture in this province.

I'll probably be going down to the grounds one day, probably wander the grounds for the afternoon then watch the chucks and grandstand show. I don't know if I'll, go to the grounds this year or not. I have a good line up of Stampede events to go to though (5 so far), and one of them is on a rooftop patio, so I might take my camera with me.

One of the perks of working in I.T. is that you usually get quite a few events to go to.

taking the kids to the rodeo this year. We didn't go to the grounds last year for the first time since moving to Calgary in 1997 and really missed it. Probably won't be going nearly as much in the future now that my connection to the Grandstand doesn't work there anymore.

Stampede soudns very subdued this year compared to years past. I'm thinking DT will be a lot quieter this year with fewer big parties, due to the oilpatch being in the toilet.

Unscientific sampling, I'd say easily 3/4 of the Stampede events that I've been to every year have been canceled (all the corporate stuff). Most of the free pancake breakfasts at malls are still on, but wow - subdued is such an understatement.

The high class hookers have been in town for a couple of weeks already; I almost feel sorry for them as they'll probably do poor business this year.

That being said, any excuse to party is a good one; this city certainly needs it. It's amusing to see how many are determined to not enjoy it. :D

I have a great deal for Stampede because my partner does the visitor research and so I get one of his passes- to be able to just come and go anytime I want at the grounds is luxury. I love the ag stuff (standing next to a steer is humbling and AWESOME for a city kid), eat lots of crap, it's all good. There's something for everyone at Stampede. My favourite thing is really just to people watch; the multicultural cowboys and cowgirls speaking so many different languages, it's pure 21st century Canada depite its hokiness.

They never have a proper setup. The equivalent in Winnipeg (the Red River Ex) has an entire barn full of various small animals that you can feed and pet and whatnot. That's the one thing about Stampede that disappoints me - it's an ag fair, they should have a large barn with tame animals for the kids. Goats, pigs, etc. Stampede has many of these animals but they're spread out and not really intended for petting.

The Ex also had a Tic-Tac-Toe playing chicken which I'm embarrassed to say actually beat me the first time I played it. :haha:

Yeah, that's more of a "display" tent than a petting farm though. I guess it's technically possible to pet the piglets (they're damn cute!) but not the same idea.

I went to the TransAlta Sneak-a-Peak rehearsal of the GrandStand show today, and boy was it good. Even though the weather stunted the show slightly, it was still a fantastic performance.

Year after year the Stampede in cooperation with TransAlta has put on a jaw-dropping performance. It never fails to amaze and always has people talking, "Hey, did you see the [insert part here]". And everyone is always awestruck by the firework display at the end.

One year, I'm going to skip the show and park my car up on the hill behind Stampede park and watch the Fireworks from up there. (I'm not sure what the district is called)

Oh, and the mini-donuts are still the best part of Stampede.

Edit: Oh, and while I'm at it,

One of the more unique attractions, he said, is the Rocktagon, which will make its Canadian debut here. Free with admission, it's a "digital playground" of lights and sounds and music.

Sadly this is almost impossible. Not only is the parking very strictly enforced by the city (due to the residents' demands) year-round, during Stampede they actually have police (off duty?) controlling access in and out of the area. Yes, you actually get stopped at a blockade and have to prove you live there before you can drive in.

Not sure if it's changed but this is what we ran into a couple of years ago. Also not sure how feasible it would be to park further away and walk in - do they do the "papers please!" act for pedestrians?

They only enforce it for vehicles to my knowledge, heres the media release with the rules the city put out yesterday for this year:

I am pretty sure you could walk over to Ramsay and take in the fireworks from up on Scottsmans hill. I seriously doubt they are going to stop you on foot from going up to the park to enjoy it.

I seriously doubted I'd ever see a temporary gated community in Calgary during Stampede, but here we are...

You're probably right though. Not sure how far away you'd have to park and walk though, the restricted driving area covers a good amount of land. Personally I've found the fireworks are interesting enough just sitting on the steps of the Saddledome.

That's a shame, because rabbits are probably the pinnacle of life and everything that's ever existed.

And now the Humane Society of Canada is starting with its 'end the stampede' crying for this year, starting with complaining to the CRTC that the airing of stampede events on TV is against the rules that the TV stations must abide by (claiming its a glamorization of cruelty to animals). They tried the same tactic a couple years back, but supposedly the CRTC managed to lose all the evidence that was submitted.

Mine is the pinnacle of being a naughty bastard and refusing to go back in his cage, and also refusing to be held for us to cut his claws.

Not that I'm excessively scratched tonight or anything.
I point and laugh. (And want to see this bugger)

One year, I'm going to skip the show and park my car up on the hill behind Stampede park and watch the Fireworks from up there. (I'm not sure what the district is called)

Oh, and the mini-donuts are still the best part of Stampede.

Thankfully I know someone who lives in Ramsay so I can go chill with them. They have (had?) a party every year during Stampede and the view is awesome.

Tips for mini doughnut fatties:
-Don't ask for plain ones. Why? They suck. And they're a pain in the ass to get into the bags and it takes forever.
-Give correct change. One bag for $3.50 and two for $5 is simple, but make it easier. :whip:
-If there are no doughnuts left, wait. I can't shit them out cooked and sugared. Be glad you're getting fresh ones.
-If you want a lot, come to me. My stand is near the Saddledome and beside a turkey place. I'm 16 (Look for a young, dashing man) with brown hair and rectangular glasses. There's at least one other guy who would also fit that description, so when in doubt ask. How will this get you more donuts? See the next tip.
-We track inventory with bags. If a bag is used, then there has to be money in the till to cover it. How many doughnuts go into the bag is another story. Sure you pay for 13, but don't be surprised if you get more. And if you come to me and let me know that you know me, you'll get a lot more. We won't get in trouble either, as long as you pay for the bags.
-We have moist towelettes if you ask.
-Give me money.

The district is called Ramsay and yes you have to be a resident to gain access. The gates are usually staffed by the Calgary Parking Authority.

Your best bet is to park at Ramsay school on Spiller Road. It's $20 for the day and I think $10 after 8:30pm. The proceeds go to the school. That's where the shiny new playground came from. From the school, it's just a short hike up the hill.

The checkpoints are badly needed, when it was a free for all, Ramsay turned into a massive parking lot. Not sure what it is about fireworks, but they seem to cause the mouth breathers to honk their horns for hours after wards.

That's actually a really cool idea. I may have to check that out if we do drive in - I'd much rather my money go to a good cause and not some property management company sitting on vacant land for no good reason. I wish many more parking lots would do that during Stampede.

Don't know if I'd be arsed to actually hoof it up for the fireworks though - you're right about the mouth breathers. Most of them are pretty damned drunk by the end of it, so driving home becomes akin to Death Race 2000. Calgary roads after about 10pm during Stampede are "interesting" to say the least. Combine that with all the visitors and it's a real treat for a week or so.

I wonder what the Park and Rides have been like during Stampede this year. With Crowfoot there's a lot more parking in the NW now, but with no fee...

The entrance to the parking lot is on 23rd ave. The school rents out the paved lot to O&G companies for mega cash. For $20 you only get to park on the school field.

One of the best spots to watch the fireworks is at the bottom of Scottsman Hill, along side the Elbow, directly across from where the fireworks are launched. It's like you're standing in the middle of the show. It's loud and intense and maybe a little dangerous. Last couple of years, they've had security preventing access, but I don't know if that was because that part of the bike path was closed or if that's S.O.P now. I might check it out tomorrow and report back.

Well parade day is usually an anomaly, but yesterday at Crowfoot all the south lots were pretty full in the morning, I ended up parking in the west lot which was about 1/2 full at 9:30am and the south-most lot was probably 90%. Brentwood looked to be pretty full as well, fuller then most days but not 100%.

Guess it wasn't you that I snagged donuts from earlier this evening. Either way, if you look anything like the other guy, you make me feel ooooold. Time for an almost midlife crisis, methinks. :haha:

Stampede was interesting today. A lot quieter than I expected overall (combine bad forecast with recession?) but wow - were the drunks ever out in force. Guys were staggering around the place by 6pm, and girls started giving me the vacant stare long before it even hinted at being dark. We went to the Stampede Casino afterwards and a young guy was being loaded into an ambulance. He was having quite the animated discussion with his buddy; clearly he was pissed to the gills and had taken the wrong end of a fight.

Stampede, and downtown in general, has more cops than I've ever seen in this city, bar none.

Do recessions just bring out the worst in people, or what? During the boom we saw a lot of excessive behaviour but it seems to have taken a dark turn. People certainly didn't come off as happily drunk this year - I heard a LOT of yelling/arguing/whatever. Guys and girls fighting, guys yelling at each other, just a bad scene. Maybe it was the soggy weather but I dunno. Just had a very different vibe this year.

The cattle penning was fun as expected, at least. Rocktagon looked extremely lame.

That entire exhibit was pretty lame. A few terrible booths, a bunch of chairs and couches, some Bell dummy phones, and a few Lenovo T61s to demonstrate their internet or something. It's a sad little place.

You must be a real hoot at Flames games. "Hey, it's the same game every time I come - most of the same people playing, too! Pfft, there was a fight last week". :D

I kid, but come on - ALL entertainment is in large part like this. Part of why things become repeated events is that people enjoy what's there, and want to experience it again.

I went down to the Stampede this afternoon. Avoided taking the CTrain. This is the only time I'll avoid taking it. Luckily, I avoided the downpour and did my usual Stampede activities. I wandered through the commercial exhibits and the arts and crafts in BMO Centre. I've never been crazy about the mini-donuts (sorry Vas), but there is this small cake with a custard-like filling that I'll buy if I see it, and I did. The ShamWow booth was quite busy; sorry no Vince. The only thing I did buy was some goodies from The Nut Man. My timing was good and I watched the finals of the Team Cattle Penning. Such skill. I don't attend events in the Saddledome like a lot of you guys, but to me it is starting to look a bit tired. I spent most of my time in the Big 4 building (opened 50 years ago today coincidentally) playing the slots. The prices for pretty much everything are obscene.....reminded me of my Vegas trip in April. Had the Wor Won Ton at the Wonton King in the BMO Centre.....very good and very filling. Had a nice walk in the Beltline to 17th Ave & 14th St and caught the #6 home.

Overpriced... yeah, mostly. I will say that even at $9, the beef on a bun I had was absolutely amazing. Felt like a solid pound of beef (hi, heart attack!) plus onions and mushrooms and cheese sauce.

Probably more food for that price than you'd get at McDonald's, not that that's saying much. Add in the $1 milk and cookies and it was quite the filling meal.

I had the taco-in-a-bag...I thought it was great! It's a bag of Doritos that is cut open on the side. Then they pile on lettuce, ground beef, cheese, salsa and sour cream. I'll be having that again for sure....best new food of the midway so far. At least I think it's new, I don't remember seeing it last year.

I also had the deep-fried jelly beans. They're all right, but nothing special. They just taste like jelly beans with a lot of batter. I guess they tast exactly as I thought they would.

And, the Alligator pizza, which really just tastes like pizza with overcooked chicken on it.

I've decided to make my own taco in a bag, when all my friends are back and the Stampede is over. I also decided to smarten up and buy a six pack of 710mL Cokes and some 250g of beef jerky. It all came to less than the cost of 5 bottles of Coke at the Stampede price.

Random Stampede fact: The military's display is on guard 24/7, mainly because all the stuff they have on display happens to be the real deal, save for any ammo. (Machine guns, assault rifles, helicopter, LAV, etc)

The military displays were excellent. My kids loved them, and the people they had manning the displays and booths were friendly and fun. Talking to, and overhearing other conversations from some of them, it was both interesting and sobering to hear how many of them had been to Afghanastan or were slated to be going there soon. Most of them looked like they were barely out of high school.

You can always tell if someone's in their 30s (rough guess) - that's when we start to notice that military types all look very young, but also when we notice that most NHL players look VERY young.

It's sad to think that I'd be close to retirement if I played hockey. :haha:
