I prefer to go to Westworld. It's close to my house, I don't have to make an appointment to get service, not to mention the service is better, and it's independent. I go to the Apple store to check stuff out if I'm at the mall, but I always do my business elsewhere.

I also do not, for the life of me, understand the crowds in the Apple store. First, we've had one in Calgary for what, a year?

I take it you've never been in the Market Mall store in the middle of the day have you? I refuse to go, as its insane to think at 2pm on a Wednesday that you have to wait in line just to talk to a sales person, and theres 10+ of them working.

A bit disappointed with the store lineup but there's at least a dozen still to open, so I'm reserving judgement.

I hear ya about the Apple store, have never went in one and couldn't give a rat's ass about what they're selling. Mind you my BB is payed for by my work and my HP computer at home works just fine for what I use it for... guess I'm just too old to appreciate having my cell phone count calories for me. ;)

I too went in the expansion yesterday... bought shorts on sale at Abercrombie and at Hollister each for around $20. It'll be alot better in there once the rest of the stores open, but even as it is it's by far the best mall in Calgary.

Thought the actual expansion part was bland, they need some plants or something in there!

The Market Mall store hasn't been that bad, post-opening excitement anyway. We used to be able to go in and buy things without any lineup whatsoever. Although lately it does seem a lot busier - which again I just can't figure out. What exactly has Apple introduced in the past few months of note? Another minor Macbook revision? A barely-changed iPhone (now with more apps)?

the iPad?

Which has been out for nearly 6 months now?

I dunno, maybe it's just that I prefer to do my research online, and go to a store only to get a quick "hands on" and possibly purchase it. I don't need to spend an hour farting around with gadgets to know what I like - if it takes me that long, odds are I don't want/need it.

Most people in an Apple store seem to be using it like free entertainment. Cheaper than a movie, eh?

I will die before I get an iPhone, but your question is pretty silly. Have you SEEN the retina display? How much better the new iPhone camera is? This is a pretty massive upgrade.

I also just got the new iPod touch- it rocks. Retina display, faster all around, a great little device. Add to that- the new Nano is amazing. Just a treat to mess around with.

The apple store also has the best selection of cases for your i-whatever gadgets, mac peripherals, etc, and they have everything in stock.

I've never really understood the ipod-phone craze... I've had one for years but maybe use it a couple times a year on holidays. I guess I'd rather crank mp3 music on my computer stereo in my home office or let Sirius decide which songs I listen to while driving, not to mention watching TV on a 72" TV, not a 3" phone screen... I guess I'm a dinosaur at 35, eh?

What's to understand? I like to play a few rounds of Angry Birds and watch an ep of American Dad before I go to bed. With my touch. Again, you'll never see me with an iPhone when there are so many- as in hundreds- of other choices out there, but when it comes to personal media players, nothing tops the ipod touch. Zune would be awesome of it was mac compatible, which leaves me no choice.

Being stuck on a 9-hour flight with a broken seatback and no ipod touch would be like hot death to me.

Both H&M and Apple are covered with generic "Core" signs now. Neither retailer had confirmed anything at the mall. The Core brought members of their leasing teams to showcase their space in hopes they'd sign up.

I was at the Brazilian BBQ restaurant on Macleod Trail across from Chinook Centre on Sunday and noticed how ugly the new wing on Chinook Centre looks from the outside. I didn't go inside. I hope that the Shell station moves off their current site as it does add an additional blight to the streetscape of Chinook Centre. Very unimpressed.

Great resto btw. I agree, it's a horrible streetscape that resduces not only the pedestrian experience, but also the vibrancy of Macleod trail. IMHO the mall needs more retail.

Parts of Calgary, anyway. Coach really seems to appeal to Asian women for some reason, based on who I generally see shopping there.

Not to stereotype but most asian girls have multiple luxury handbags, not just Coach. But many asians from overseas have an affinity for Coach because it is American and is seen as the most luxurious american label. Plus their stuff is cheaper than the other luxury brands.

If you go to Hong Kong or Japan, LV Burberry and Gucci are so commonplace that they are pretty much what Coach has become here.

Of course I think Hermes dominates the handbag market in terms of exclusivity.

Interesting. I guess I never realized Coach is American (as opposed to the other brands, I guess most of those are European?).

And yeah, I'm trying not to stereotype but there sure is a correlation.

Further digging a hole, this is why my friends say I can never date an Asian girl - I just couldn't imagine ONE luxury purse, let alone MULTIPLE. :haha: Nice clothes hold up and look awesome, but the women I know seem to change their purses more than they change their hair. I couldn't imagine dropping $500+ on something that lasts 3 months.

I had a cappuccino at P&S in marda loop. It was $3.85 and delicious. Later in the day I had one at Second Cup, it was $3.05, and was like Starbucks but 1/2 as burnt tasting. Can't say if $3.85 is worth it, but the extra 80 cents was.

Two locations (CFM closes in December) are hardly a "chain." Yes some of their drinks are pricier than Starbucks but you simply cannot compare the two. Capo is more expensive than The Olive Garden too.

If I'm going to have coffee out, I'm happy to pay the premium for quality. I already have a good grinder at home, and happily pay a lot more for good beans for my vacuum pot and french press. What I couldn't do, even if I had the equipment, is the quality of espresso and especially the milk foam that I can get get as a matter of routine all over central Calgary.

Took an opportunity to go check out Chinook's expansion tonight, and have to say I'm quite disappointed. The only part of it that gets an 'awesome' rating is the technology in the parkade. The corridors in the mall itself are bland, nothing really exciting in terms of new shops (at least for me), and thats about all I can say.

The one interesting thing I did notice that I didn't expect was the link from the new parkade to the old west parkade underneath the mall, that they must have roughed in quite a while ago or else they did some interesting excavation beneath the existing mall for it.

This isn't the first time I've read this here... what exactly is missing in the expansion you guys were looking for? There's not much missing in Chinook that you can find in any US mall, and it has the same stores as any major Toronto mall or WEM... especially once all the stores open by December. I think Chinook has as good a store lineup as any I've been to, except maybe for Mall of America and Galleria in Houston.

As far as the expansion itself, it it bland and white in there... it needs something, maybe palm trees.

RE: Chinook Parking

The connecting tunnel under the mall was built as part of the last major renovation in 2000...leading to the street level lots facing Macleod Trail, and opening right next to Moxie's.

RE: Expansion area

While I do think the new area is a nice addition, the old areas needed to undergo a renovation to match. I also find the new tile incredibly cheap looking. It is a faux-finish ceramic which looks temporary...hopefully the idea was to use an inexpensive tile to get the job done and in a few years time go through the replace the floors throughout the entire mall.

They are the roaster- in fact their official name is "Phil & Sebastian Coffee Roasters." Their facility is south of Crossroads, actually not far from Fratello.

What you tasted a year ago is definitely their early efforts at roasting- they (and Fratello these days) are good enough to be, in my opinion, among the four or five best roasters in Canada (the others being 49th Parallel and JJ Bean, and I'd think Fernwood since a Fernwood roaster/barista won CNBC nationals last month... baristas for P&S came in 2nd and 4th and Fratello in 3rd).

If I'm reading this correctly:

In Canada, a Rainforest Cafe must be franchised, so the folks at CrossIron Mills would need to find a group of investors with a minimum liquidity of $5 million & a minimum net worth of $12 million.

As a side note, wouldn't it be nice to have a Great Wolf Lodge on the CrossIron property, or somewhere in Calgary?

Perhaps, but if a company cares about their product, then their quality control should be good enough to prevent putting out product that is below their standard. Most retail won't get a second chance if the consumer isn't happy the first time. The first time I had their coffee (when they started roasting) I thought it was pretty good, but there was better to be had. This last time, however, I was really impressed with it. I'll pick up more when I'm in their neighbourhood, until then, I still really enjoy Latitute 49 and Transcend (who will ship a fresh pound to your house for $15).

Im wondering if Ivanhoe Cambridge has it's hands full with CIM? I believe they sold Sunridge Mall last December, and they sold Southcentre this past June. The rumor is that H&M is still a go.. Apple is looking for a downtown store, but the store wont be as big as the one in Chinook. Apple is really picky about where it goes within a mall setting. Some landlords have moved structural columns within a space to get Apple as a tenant (they want a space that is free and clear of columns and posts).

Remind me to never visit an Apple store after a heavy snowfall.

Wont matter... with all the people inside, the ceiling weight will be evenly distributed.. people wont even notice!

I thought that with the opening of the Chinook Apple store, there would be some pressure taken off of the Market Mall store....nope! Still very busy! A downtown store may help to take some of the pressure off.

While the stores continue to be packed with browsers, it would be interesting to see if sales volumes have changed at MM. Then again, Apple Stores never really have been about selling anything, so who knows.

The Apple store at Chinook has a 2 level (complete with elevator) storage area in the back.

Over at CrossIron Mills, Revolve Furnishings is leaving in early December. Boathouse is open and looks bigger than the Chinook location. Levi Outlet opens Oct 29. Spirit Halloween closes end of day Nov 1. Battlefield Live looks to be a really cool concept. A cross between indoor paintball and laser tag.
There was something mentioned in the Herald about CrossIron Mills hiring "Holiday Ambassador's" to carry parcels for customers to their vehicles. Must be nice. :)
The new interchange to get traffic SB on Highway 2 looks like it might open as soon as Monday.

Revolve was a temporary leasing wasn't it? I wonder if they have filled that space, it's an anchor location I think.

Don't forget to add the "graphic T", some boxers that sit above the waistband of your jeans, and a fauxhawk.

And also, dont forget to buy a "beadazzler" and glue all kind of shit to the shirt and then finish it off with some gold glue..... and the bug eye sunglasses.....and the smurf toque....lol Bang, and a complete look for winter 2010 - 11

The CORE Shopping Centre downtown has announced FREE parking at its underground lots after 4pm weekdays and weekends. Up until now it was $2. I wonder if this will help get people down there.

RE: the renovations...are coming nicely to an end...they have some really cool "green" walls made up of living plants. The only thing not completed are the main level floors which will be done after the Christmas season.

Still no word if H&M or Apple have signed on...

The free parking is KEY to the success of the The CORE. Right now it is just filled with people eating lunch.

If anyone has visited this and/or played it, I'd like to know what it's about. I looked up the website (http://www.battlefieldlive.com/) (which reads more like franchise advert) It sounds like it's very flexible with a lot more features than laser tag, but I'd like to know what they have built at CrossIron.

Five Guys is pretty good, but if you're around that part of town, I'd suggest going to Rocky's Burger Bus instead.

Airdrie too.

Speaking of Burger joints jumping the border... Carl's Jr was supposed to open restaurants in BC & Alberta a couple of years ago and never did, wonder what's up with that?

El Pollo Loco was also thinking about coming up here but put their plans on hold due to the US economy.

Carl's Jr. is just another Burger King/Wendy's/McDonalds.

5 guys, if their reputation can be believed, ranks up there with Fatburger and In and Out. Please, for the love of all that is holy in the burger world, let us complete the trifecta!

I second that. Stumbled across that place/bus a month ago and was glad I swung in.

Not as much as you might think- www.carlsjr.com. Much bigger menu- CJ/Hardee's are more like Jack in the Box, nothing really like it in Canada.

I've only had Carl's Junior once, and wasn't overly impressed with the quality. It's difficult to do a large menu properly in a regular restaurant, let alone in a fast food situation. I'm not a big fan of In and Out burger, either though... they keep their menu simple and do an excellent job of representing a fresh, home-cooked mom and pop middle-american hamburger, but that kind of bland food is not my cup of tea.

If we have to have more fast food restaurants, I'd be more interested in seeing something like a Chipotle Mexican Grill come here.

I don't mind CJ burgers, but what I do love which isn't up here is Jack n' the Box breakfast sandwiches!

McDonalds single or double cheeseburgers are still my greasy little fastfood burger of choice... just like they were when I was young.

Damn, I wish I wasn't working, I'd like to see hundreds of hipsters both simultaneously pouring into the store yet looking disinterested at the same time.

Indeed. I have a good number of childhood memories at Carl's Jr, it was always a treat when we were on the West Coast.

Damn, you reminded me of yet another chain I long for up here.

Maybe I've just never hit the right Carl's Jr. I've never seen anything remotely close to Jack's menu there. Just burgers, fries, chicken burger, fries, and a couple of salads. Mind you, the last Carl's I went to was in Culver City. I'll leave the joke for the folks that know.

Looks like I'll be able to try out Carl's Jr and Chipotle's when I'm in philly next week. Sadly no white castle though, unless I figure out a way to expense a 2 hr round-trip cab ride to Atlantic City.

Instead of fast food to fill the stomach here and there i have been sticking to local restaurants.......MUCH better. See which one you can discover today! Plus, a typical A&W or Wendy's meal is almost the same price as some of the affordable, tasty restaurants we have in the core / chinatown. Dont get me wrong, I love a good burger meal for around $10.00, but recently I have been making other choices and paying about $11 or $12 instead.

Go support a local restaurant instead of a double-down......

Made it a point to find a White Castle last time I was in Manhattan... fuck was it gross, never again!

I'll be ordering an In & Out burger next week in Vegas.

You should only ever eat White Castle during or after a night of drinking/partying. For some reason, it really hits the spot in that instance (not unlike Denny's).

White Castle is a strange beast. Nobody thinks it's good, but it has this weird ability to get its hooks in you....and once you have a few you get this urge to go back for more.
