I had heard about this last week and just got around to posting it now. Pretty sad.

Gatineau hopes to rebuild Hotel Chez Henri -- brick by brick

Hotel Chez Henri was once the place to party on Quebec's side of the Ottawa River, entertaining back to the days of Prohibition.

A new owner planned to give new life the now-empty building. But a demolition mistake means a wrecking crew tore down more than what was permitted, angering local heritage advocates.

The building has been slowly torn down over the past week, including the tower that created the appearance of a Renaissance castle. That part of the project was not supposed to happen, and is the talk of downtown Gatineau.

And instead of night owls, pigeons are now perched on the remaining façade.

Three walls were supposed to remain, but only two now exist. Gatineau Mayor Marc Bureau called the mistake "disappointing" while speaking to reporters Monday morning.

The first two floors of the current building were constructed for family use in 1901. By 1929, ownership had transferred to Henry Burger, an internationally-renowned chef who opened Chez Henri with several investors.

The additional storey and castle-style roof were added in 1930 as the Great Depression began to rage. Telephones were installed in all 30 rooms, and formal attire was expected in the dining room.

The club passed to an ownership group, none more famous than J.P. Maloney, who died in 1983 inside his penthouse apartment at the hotel. The building was closed in the 1990s, and was declared a heritage site in 2003.

Hotel Chez Henri was the only such heritage building in the Hull sector of Gatineau - a designation designed to stave off wrecking balls.

City officials are considering a fine but are demanding another costly measure in the meantime. They want the knocked-down bricks to be salvaged and the third wall and turret rebuilt.

"It will be important to have a very heavy fine," said Michel Prevost of the Outaouais Heritage Society. "A message (that) you can't tear down our protected heritage."

Too bad. As if downtown Hull hasn't endured enough devastation over the years. Hopefully they actually rebuild it and it actually looks like what was there.

The developer plans do do just that, I think.. but we'll see. He told Le Droit that most of the building was unsalvageable after years of neglect.

Thats tight across from Le Bop right? Many nights I have spent drinking there.... The last time was in December. So the building came down this past week?

Yep, this week it came down.

I just went out to inspect it. Fortunately the walls along promenade du Portage and rue Aubry are sort of intact. Unfortunately the entire third floor and roof (where some nice details were) are completely gone. The debris is already picked up.

I don't how long it has been there, but there is a crane up there now.

Yeah it's been there for at least a week, probably more. Radster mentioned it in the Gatineau thread a while ago.

I haven't seen much progress lately here. They must still be cleaning up debris and making sure they don't knock anything else over.

They've poured some concrete for the foundation...it's coming along.

Construction has been halted for some time, but will probably start up again this week according to Le Droit.

Wow, I don't get this article at all!!

I work in the CIDA building, which is 200 Portage, right across the street from Chez Henri, and I have a nice bird's eye view of the site everyday ( I was here all summer too ), they have been working at this site constantly over the past few months, with only a few short breaks here and there (longerst break was for a period of about 3 weeks this summer when someone got injured on the site). Just last Friday they were pouring concrete in for the street level floor, meaning that they are now at street level and this will now start going up.

This building is going up quick! In a week they managed to erect a big chunk of the skeleton of the building, with a kind of pre-fabricated metal. Sorry for my lack of construction terminology. Maybe harls will have a chance to take a pic of this site in the next few days?
