Fortaleza es la capital de Ceará, un estado del noreste de Brasil. Importante centro turístico al poseer magníficas playas, como la Playa del Futuro, a este de la ciudad. Es también un importante centro regional de comercio y servicios.

La ciudad se localiza en el litoral, a una altura de 21 metros sobre el nivel del mar, tiene una superficie de 319,1 km² en la que alberga a 2.374.944 habitantes (con una densidad demográfica de 7.310,12 hab./km²) y si se cuenta su área metropolitana la cifra llega a los 3.3 millones. Su aeropuerto es el Aeropuerto Internacional Pinto Martins. En tamaño, ocupa el cuarto lugar entre las capitales de estados brasileñas
