Shooting at Austin night club injures at least six

By Isadora Vail and Michael Corcoran | Friday, May 29, 2009, 11:44 AM

As Austin police continue to investigate an early morning shooting downtown that injured at least six people, witnesses to the melee at Spiros nightclub have started to surface, identifying the suspects as members of a La Grange-based hip hop group.

The 2:15 a.m. shooting happened after one of two rap groups scheduled to play Thursday at the club, at 611 Red River St., was kicked out, police said. Two of the rap-group members who were ejected later returned to Spiros and started shooting, police said.

I hate crappy hip-hop groups who pull this stuff. Just hire a manager.

This is going to pay big dividends long-term for these guys. After they are released from prison, they're going to have some serious street-cred. I wonder if their agent put them up to this.

Actually, as others have said in the current events forum, they probably didn't have an agent. I was let down when I saw that Statesman.com doesn't have a comments page for the Blotter articles. It would be hilarious if people decided to boycott them. Great professional move guys, spray your customers with bullets while they wait for your show.

Losers.

Spiros has been a problem club for some time now though, while I agree that this is on the groups head, the club is known for frequent fights and other crimes. It is not the only one, there are several others in the 6th street area that I think the city really needs to crack down on. I love 6th street but Im getting to the point where I only go to maybe one or two clubs on 6th then I go off to 5th street and the Warehouse District.

It's sad that an area that is supposed to be a major tourist attraction has gone downhill so badly. It's been coming on for a long time. I don't know what the solution is. At my place of business we stopped taking visitors to
6th street several years ago.

It's a pretty popular music venue. I've been there, it's not the typical nightclub.

Edit: Nevermind i looked it up and I don't think I've been there. must have confused it for somewhere else.

I don't know what the solution is.

The city could start by forcing club owners to clean up in front of their establishment before start of business the next morning like they do in Chicago, including all the nasty gum impregnated in the sidewalks. Maybe a clean area would draw nicer crowds and better businesses.

The city is going after Spiro's along with Fuze and Ivy. When the city got Paradox shut down, the crowds went to Spiro's, Fuze, and Ivy. Cielo (Sky Lounge) is also on its way down. FYI, anytime you see a radio station vehicle at a bar or club...that's it. It's officially gone. I watch this stuff every night when I work.

Whats worse is the people that had to sell Paradox took over Sky Lounge and what was once a pretty cool place to go hear some dance music and to see some bad ass DJ's is now as ghetto as Paradox was. Its messing up business for the nices clubs on that corner too. Ive talked to the people who run the LANAI, and they have seen their patrons get harrassed by some of the people from Cielo.
