Just look at these maps of planned developments for Houston in the 80s.:tantrum: I bet if majority of these towers were built, Houston would have a skyline similar to Chicago and NYC. I found this on HAIF.

When I did SOM's database in '06, I came upon some 80's compilation book which had some spankin' renders of 80+ floor towers for Houston. Several of those were in advanced design stages and were taller than anything currently in the city.

There was an article in AF in the mid-80s on future development for downtown Houston, had some models and renders of the district. From what I can remember, they were expecting a 'boom' of 10 million square ft of office towers in the next ten years, with about a dozen 60-80 storey buildings.

another forum has pictures of two of the buildings, as they were built to smaller scale in different cities...
The "Block 265" Tower was built in Los Angeles, the Bank Of the Southwest Tower was built in Philly (twice)

Block 265 is currently awaiting 5 Allen Center.

80 storey...then I see the name Campeau. A giant speculator, if there ever was one (in Canada, but with real estate interests everywhere in the USA)

Here's one rendering I found of a unamed supertall, you can clearly see 3 Allen Center and the Doubletree Hotel in the background.

Here's an ad for a condo tower that went nowhere. It was placed in an October 1981 issue of the Houston Post, but I've only come across it that one time. The address is also where another condo tower of similar height was supposed to have been built several years ago, but I'd guess it's long since dead as well.

Here's a model of a lesser known project called Resource Centre/Houston. It was to have been a series of towers: 46, 36, 26 & 16 stories tall, with the smallest being a hotel and the rest being office space. 2 million square feet on 16 acres. It would've been located east of what's now CityCentre, occupying the land that's now a large strip center.

This is not from the 80's, but posting it here anyway.
I have been watching the forum for a while now, but I had to join for this thread. Yes, this is not a hoax as I have personally meet the developers with two of my fellow classmates. The project has been in the works for a while, the website went up over a year ago (Its not new). In 2006 I meet with the developers, Mr. Angel and Mr. McIver at their offices. We developed the site for our finial project at the UH masters program and the gentlemen wanted to get an idea of what we thought of the site (They keep our model). When we meet with everyone at that point the architects of the project was SPA architecture, but it looks as if that might have changed now. I would be shocked if it got built, it will take a while after all due to the scale of the site...but considering the current economy don't count on anything soon. Currently they have not even cleaned up from the hurricane, I live very close to the site so I go by every day on my way home. I bet it will be 5 years before you see one building on the site. Below is some images of our project (note: we took the car dealship and the metro land in our school project).

Wow, thank goodness that was never built, there would be no hope for density in the part of town if those plans went through.

How does a building a bunch of skyscrapers provide no hope for density?

Note how different Three Allen Center looks when more than fifty floors. Since this got it wrong, I'm not sure whether the project, referred to above as HL&P, was from before 1983 when Three Allen Center was topped out. Anyway, the picture is p.87 from the February 1988 Connoisseur magazine

Do you not see how spread out those buildings are? Its like a glorified suburban office park, yuck and not dense at all.

It's not bad, though. It could've been worse. That looks MILES ahead of what Century City currently is.
