I missed most the whole storm last nite. Had a date with the g/f. Picked her up at 730pm, noticing the darkening and looming northern sky. Ate at Maudies at Slaughter/Brodie then hopped on Mopac North just before 9pm and had a helluva view of the storm on our way into town. Near 360 we were thinking, it might be smarter to divert to a Blockbuster and watch something back at her house if things got downright wicked. We were catching a 925p movie at the Paramount". The wind was noticeable driving into it and just past the Zilker Park exit the wind physically jolted her Toyota Carolla a couple of feet into the right lane, almost hitting a car speeding up from behind. Was struggling to keep the car control as we crossed the Mopac bridge...almost thought we could be picked up and thrown into Town Lake. We turned the radio and heard expected hail and of the tornado reported through the 183 area and wisely parked in a garage at 8th and brazos (?) Folks were running for cover and covering their eyes. A lot of dust and debris was being kicked around and the rain hadn't quite kicked in. I felt sorry for the Intercontinental Hotel Valets as they were scrambling to get a dozen cars parked ASAP. Lady at the Ticket office noted " You know they reported tornados up north, right?" . We knew. I joked, "Can you guarantee our safety?" and she said " Well, the Paramount has been here for about 100 years. " . We got our tickets, bought a couple of beers and didn't linger in the lobby enough to see the storm really hit in earnest.
We could hear some thunder in the quiet parts of the movie and we could feel some of the vibrations too and at one point heard some sirens blaring by on Congress.
What was it like? How long did it last? Some of the pictures were just nothing short of stunning. I know of the damage done up north.

INCREDIBLE shots! I live near the Avery Ranch/Jollyville area. I wasn't quite brave enough to walk into the front yard, but I did spot a wall cloud and developing funnel cloud out my backyard window. Took some pics, but nowhere near as dramatic as those above.
All I can say is, I'm now glad that I procrastinated in getting my hail-damaged roof repaired! We had some serious hail. My poor neighbors with their recently repaired roofs...

I was reading up on cloud formations. I was watching some of the storm videos of this on Youtube. One weather guru type said that the cloud seen in Cedar Park and North Austin was a "scud cloud". The scientific name is arcus cloud. Anyway, I looked that up, and sure enough, if you Google scud cloud, they have a photo of one that looks a lot like the "funnel cloud" posted above. Typically these don't rotate and aren't usually dangerous, nor tornado related.
As I said, we went to San Antonio yesterday. This wasn't storm related, but I bet the guy wished this hadn't happened. On the way there there on I-35, there was an car carrier 18 wheeler infront of us. It was windy and he was swaying just a bit. We were watching him anyway because of that. And then all of a sudden BOOM. We hear this loud boom and then a dust cloud on his front left tire. He had blown a tire. His tread came off, we ran over it. With the tread coming off it unwrapped and tore off some of his fender. So there was debris from that. Thankfully he kept it under control and pulled off to the side of the highway. As we passed him I looked and his tire was shredded. Anyway, 2 hours later when we were going back home, we passed him and they were still there repairing the truck. And that was about 15 minutes before the storm rolled in.

Back at our house near the Dick Nichols park, we got nickel sized hail, winds of what I would say of around 30 mph, a cloud to ground lightning every 5 seconds, a cloud to cloud lightning strike every single second, and one of those "spiderweb" lightning strikes every 3 seconds.
This storm was a true monster alright!
Austin Energy® reported at one time 15,000 of its costumers got power outages.

agree with the "scud cloud". wind gusts, yes; tornado...not in my opinion. anyway, i live near the domain and our house was pelted by hail the size of golf balls, maybe slightly larger. no noticeable damage though. it was an awesome storm to watch. fantastic photos!

I swam at Dick Nichols the day of the storm. The life guards/other personnel at the park said they were going to close the pool an hour earlier. There were no lightning strikes at the time though. I overheard a little kid at the pool claim that there was/will? be a tornado. I guess that was the scud in Jollyville.
Closest lightning strike at our house was about less than 100 yards away.

That picture looks like back in the 1980's . ;)
Scud Cloud Explanation:
Scud (fractostratus) is sometimes mistaken as a funnel cloud. The first thing to look for when trying to determine if a cloud is scud or a funnel is rotation. Whereas funnel clouds rotate, scud does not (although scud does move and change shape with time).
At first glance, this cloud could be mistaken for a funnel. However, careful inspection will show that there is no rotation.
Scud forms below a shower or thunderstorm as cool moist air flows up into the parent cloud. It is ragged in appearance and usually is not attached to the parent cloud.

You know, I work at Macy's at the Domain, near the northeast entrance. I was at work during the storm and we were all kind of hanging out because there were no costumers during the storm. The rain was INSANE and we could hear crazy amounts of thunder. At the time we didn't see hail, but today I noticed some dents on my car so unfortunately it looks like I got a little bit of hail damage. ugh.
I got off work after the storm lifted but the lightning arcing through the clouds was amazing on the way home.

I guess you were right about that scud thing. I just heard on the news today about it. Here's the quote: (I tried to make the quote about what he said).
The severe weather on Thursday night gave way a lot of rain. Residents claimed that there was a tornado in the Jollyville area. The unconfirmed tornado was actually a scud. A scud is the same thing as a tornado only it does not rotate. Cool air beneath the storm causes the warm air beneath as well to rise. Wind gusts in the storm were recorded of up to 65 mile per hour.

I just felt like posting this. So, yea, radar from that day.
http://radblast-sf.wunderground.com/cgi-bin/radar/WUNIDS_composite_archive?centerlat=29.71961975¢erlon=-98.08080292&radius=124&newmaps=1&type=N0R&type2=TR0&num=24&SD.epoch=1244696400&ED.epoch=1244782799&DELAY=60&delay=20&width=640&height=480
Although the storm looked more small then those "bow echoes" that we usually have in the spring-summer time, I think it was way more powerful.
