Downtown St. Catharines is located in the center of the city, along Twelve Mile Creek. The city was named after Catharine Hamilton, wife of Robert Hamilton, who owned the land that is now Downtown. The Downtown area developed as a storehouse district for merchants using the Welland Canal, which first passed through the neighborhood when the first Welland Canal was completed in 1829. Mills later were built as raceways spurred off of the canal. As a result of the merchants operating storage facilities, and mills being located along the canal, Downtown is alternately known as the "Mercantile District".

These backs of the buildings once fronted along Dick's Creek and Twelve Mile Creek. These waterways later became the second Welland Canal, built in the 1820s. A dry dock was also located in this valley when the Welland Canal utilized this area.

Interesting collection.

St Catherines seems very rust belt, but with an Ontario flare, I suppose. It's a beautiful city I think, with a story, and lots of potential, but seems in a bit of a rut. Or at least thats the impression your photos leave of.

St Catharines is fine. It looks like it is in a rut, because the downtown area has been almost killed off by Pen Centre Mall.
The rest of St Catharines is doing fine and growing.

Small cities like St Catharines have to understand they can't support both downtown retail and regional malls. Sadly it took them basically killing off the downtown to see this.

I've always liked the way the through roads follow the old water course past the backs of the buildings.

St Catharines actually has quite the lively downtown and it is not as rundown as these pictures suggest.

St. Kitts ain't too bad, very typical for an Ontario city in terms of the health of its downtown (which is to say it could be a lot worse, but it also could be better).
