View Full Version : The most underrated thing about Calgary is.... (Bow Valley Pathway)

I've been falling in love with the Bow Valley pathway this summer. Today I cycled down through COP into Bowness Park onto the Pathway and did the NW route through to Edworthy and beyond.

Today, especially, there was a great vibe going, hundreds of rafts out on the river, and loads of people in the parks, and what a diverse and multicultural crowd.

I have also been doing regular runs around the Beaverdam Flats / Carburn Park area this year, and again... Just awesome.

This pathway system is a huge asset for the City, I can't believe what a low profile it has.

The pathway system is indeed one our true hidden gems in this city.

Pictures? I would go take my bike out and ride it, but I just got my wisdom teeth out. Sounds like a nice ride.

I haven't had a chance to ride up towards Bowness this season, I always love the ride though.

A day like today it doesn't get any better to be out there!

I've often said to people that although Calgary doesn't have the greatest record for preserving their built environment, they have done a great job with the natural environment. Just as an example, here's photos of what the banks of the Bow used to look like:

Yeah, rafting down the Bow makes you realize just how well-kept the river is these days. There's still the occasional bit of leftover dock pier or train debris, but for the most part it's pristine. About the worst you see is some of the industrial yards in the SE, but the bank itself is good.

The work that the city has done the last while to improve the lookouts and pathways along the rover has helped a lot too.

Wow! That's something Dizzy!

Yes, Calgary has managed its waterfronts (and water quality) really well. I actually think that former Mayor Jack Leslie should be the namesake of the new pedestrian bridge. He was really the leading force opposing the relocation of the CPR mainline to the south banks of the bow along with the 8 lane 'downtown penetrator'. There is a great little plaque explaining it right near the helipad where the landing of the bridge will happen.

Why not a "Jack Leslie Bridge"? I think it would be great to suggest it to council. If it weren't for him and others who helped him, Calgary's downtown and riverfront would have been fucked permanently.

^^ Great idea.

I should note that from the descriptions on the Glenbow I believe those photos are of the downtown-side of the bow river banks, likely on either side of Prince's island.

I only brought my cell phone camera and the batteries were low so I needed to reserve power for my call to my ride back home. Next time I'll take a real camera with me... it's a do-over for sure.

follow the link forward at the bottom of the Jack Leslie article to the article on Rod Sykes. The last paragraph of it must be one of the most bizarre on Wikipedia.

And I quote (in case someone edits it):

For over 20 years since Rodney's mother died, her will has been in limbo. This tactic is because of Rodney's vindictive attitude to his sister Anne. There is no reason to act like this that I know of. I would like to severe all ties with Rodney and ask that he stops putting road blocks in, so the will can be finally executed. There are rather unattractive claims being made against Rodney that I would rather didn't go public for many reasons but will be if the will is not finalized soon. This is not a request for anything more then should have been made right many years ago. Having been unable to find a way to reach you, this has been my desperate attempt to ask that you do the right thing. Please comply and or contact me.

:haha: :haha: :haha: Sounds like someone's got an axe to grind. Wikipedia is awesome sometimes.

I couldn't agree more about the Bow River pathway.

One of the most underrated features is how nature and urban are easily tied together and accessible to each other. You can be taking a scenic ride along the beautiful Bow river, and get instant access to urban areas, such as Inlgewood, Bridgeland, Eau Claire or Kensington.

You ride along the river path in a feeling of nature, and then stop in at Eau claire for an Ice Cream, or Inglewood to do some shopping, etc....

Here are some photos taken from COP to Bowness and all the way down the pathway to Sicome. Caveat: These were taken with a cheap camera and are completely unedited.

Both Calgary and Edmonton have two of the best pathway systems anywhere but I don't think it's somthing most other Canadian cities know about. I once did a loop of about 120 kms, and probably 95 % was on pathways. The Elbow/Glenmore pathways are definitely worth doing as well.

Are there hares on the pathways? If so, then maybe I'll go down and check them out.

I totally agree. I only realized what a treasure it is when I moved to other less pedestrian friendly cities :( Slag Calgary all you want, but keeping the riverway public was one of the more thoughfull decision ever!

A couple of shots of the Bow River Pathway in the Eau Claire area.

On a summer evening, the pathway is busy with people of all types of ages and race. The more I use this pathway, the more I agree how underrated it is. A fantastic example of an urban/nature mixture.

In Eau Claire towards the west end.

I saw these pics and just had to get some out for contrast on the "less trodden" parts of the pathway system:

It appears that the lady in your first photo doesn't care much for getting her picture taken.

Yeah, I don't know what her deal was. On the next shot (which turned out blurry) she tried to cover her boyfriend's face instead.

Some people just have a serious thing about getting their picture taken, even if by complete strangers.

But yeah, in the Internet age a lot of folks are getting a bit more paranoid than is healthy.
