View Full Version : Huge Movie For Vancouver: The Next Harry Potter?

For those who haven't already heard or read about it, a new film is in the works here in Vancouver that could possibly become as huge as Harry Potter. This was even claimed by the director of this film that also directed the first few Harry Potter movies. Apparently when they started production, he was hoping for the same level of quality/talent that he received in Britain to make Harry Potter and Vancouver definitely passed his expectations!

It's not the same as Potter for Vancouver....the story occurs in New York. If it were a story featured in Vancouver or somewhere in BC, that would be another thing. It's not as if you're going to see the Lions Gate Bridge crumble into Burrard Inlet.

The same guy that directed the first two Potter movies? I absolutely despise the first two movies.

Anyhow, it's no doubt awesome for the Vancouver film industry...just wish we could have a feature film set in Vancouver for once.

The concept of there being an actual developed Country geographically near the USA would be too much for American movie goers to handle. Stay familiar!

Ooops, there were a few American movies using Montreal, as Montreal.

The whole Nine Yards and The Score were movies actually depicting Montreal as Montreal. The same could be said with Taking Lives, and Blades of Glory.

Recently, in Away we Go, (Sam Mendes's movie with The Office's John Krasinski), the characters are visiting Montreal as a place to live, but the filmmakers decided to shoot the Montreal action in ... Connecticut!

I meant a blog buster feature film....that costs hundreds of millions to make.

There is no "next Potter" - book or movie. I hate it when the media tries to drum up a particular series as "the next big thing". They are usually completely off and I doubt anything will reach Potter's success in the near future. Something that big takes on a life of it's own and you can't just fabricate that level of success; it just happens organically.

I think Twilight is as close as you can come, and that was already shot here.

I believe that First Blood (aka Rambo Part One) was filmed in, and depicted in, Hope (though I believe they called it Hope, Washington).

But close enough, eh?

Alright, here's a suggestion for the members of this forum. Let's collaborate to write a great screenplay, that is set in Vancouver. I'm actually half-serious.

If you were to write a screenplay for Vancouver, what would it be about?

If I were writing one, it would revolve around a scheme by former members of the Iranian Revolutionary Guards to take the Jamaican bobsled team hostage at the Olympic Village and not free them unless a whole oil tanker full of BC Bud was sent to North Korea...

Bob Costas could play the role of Jim "village of Vancouver" McKay.

Oh, and I'd find a part--any part--for Melora Hardin. Maybe as the love interest of an Internet forum member, turned crime fighter with the code name "Mr Jauk."

Problem isn't writing a screenplay, it's getting someone to produce it.

Well Yume was clearly kidding around, and you answered him completely seriously.

I'll chalk it up to lost in translation?

I think they should do a modern day western, call it the Bacon Brothers, (maybe we can get Kevin Bacon in it) instead of horses the outlaws will ride Suvs, and no revolvers they can have automatics and instead of dusters they'll wear bulletproof vests. It would be great, all we need is funding, I'm sure Canwest can foot the bill as they love glorifying the scene, imagine the headlines for years to come once young wanna-bes watch the film.
