View Full Version : GUILIN and YANGSHOU, China: Right up in your face and diss you.

Guangxi Province, which is home to the cities of Guilin and Yangshou, is the beauty queen province of China. The place is ridiculously gorgeous. Full of farmers, tourists (hippies from all corners of the planet love to visit and stink the joint up) and sex trade workers, Guangxi Province is unique to China. The people are very chill, the tourists aren't very fat and the elevators in 4 star hotels offer 'Lady of the Night' services.
Guangxi Province, you had me at hello.

Yangshou is full of cheesy clubs that refuse to believe such hits as Willenium and Jenny From The Block were stolen from the Beatnuts. I'll never go back.

Fantastic photos :)

The area around Yangshuo was definitely one of the highlights of my last China trip. Sure...the town itself is overrun by tourists, but as soon as you rent a mountainbike and ride far off the beaten path you'll enter another world.

duck man, island cows, and 20 quid for a cheap thrill...I dig

I really wish I had ventured to Yangshuo on my odyssey, but I didn't want to go alone.

Deja vu - I took the exact same boat trip and the exact same trip to the village (I presume you took the crazy mini-bus back as well - more overtaking maneuvers than Michael Schumacher?) where you went.

Completely different experience though. The boat ride was possibly one of the most mind numbing experiences of my life (everyone was asleep by the 2nd hour) and being welcomed by a swathe of pickpockets in Yangshou was sad. The village was good though - the reality of the true average Chinese citizen - actually the best image of China (Beijing, Shenzhen, Guilin) I took home.

Guilin is an example of when the ugliness of human development and beauty of nature merge - it gives mixed signals.

Wicked Pissah, as in these shots are so wicked, I've just pissed myself. My new underpants are starting to really dislike me, methinks.

Strange that you passed up the opportunity to make a snarky comment on this little ditty:

I'm not a big fan of that 'bar street' in Yangshuo. I don't need to venture deep into China to get that. But I really wonder ... Guilin has been open to tourists for quite a number of years, if not decades. Why are they still so poor?

The people in Guilin seemed quite prosperous. It was outside of Guilin (and Yangshou) that you saw some serious poverty. But then, outside of any urban center in China you see this kind of thing. Jaxing is a good example of this. Its a city an hour of so outside of Shanghai, yet its broke as hell outside of the CBD.

Thanks for the peeks.

Entertaining pics and comments. That old bridge makes me feel like a youngster again. I'd like to say more, but I gotta get out and walk my waterfowl down the road. Thanks.
