Ottawa River search locates large object

Witness reports suggest small aircraft crashed into rapids

Authorities said Tuesday afternoon that they might have located a large object in the Ottawa River following an overnight sighting of unusual, bright lights near the Deschenes Rapids.

Const. Alain Boucher said Ottawa police received several reports that lights were seen travelling at high speeds on the Ottawa River, which could indicate that an aircraft crashed near the rapids at the Britannia Yacht Club about 10 p.m. on Monday.

Insp. Paul Gallant, who speaks for Ottawa police, said Tuesday that the investigation was continuing, even with the new discovery.

"It's a recovery operation at this point. If it is an aircraft that went down, we're well beyond the aspect of calling this a rescue," he said.

Boucher said there were also reports that some witnesses heard a loud bang shortly after seeing the lights.

Some reports indicated the lights appeared to be a plane, he said. After contacting several airports in the area, police have no reports of a missing plane or any missing pilot, he said.

There has also been no sign of wreckage in the area, Boucher added.

The rapids were not searched overnight due to safety concerns, but police said Tuesday afternoon that they were sending a camera 10 metres under water to investigate the object.

The National Defence co-ordinator had sent out a plane to look in the area, he said. A military helicopter was also in the area, and search-and-rescue teams were on site.

Officials said the search is being treated as a retrieval mission.

It's a UFO crash site. There are alien extra-terrestrial life forms trapped in the wreckage.

and I would imagine the aliens would start with the Aylmer area first since it is close by.

If dead catfish start washing up at Westboro Beach, I'll know what's going on. It sure was noisy around here today with that chopper flying around.

Well, the show's over. Move along, nothing to see here.

I found it funny that the CBC (I think it was them?) reported a 'flood of 911 calls' when in reality there were only 3. Sensational.

Some of the comments on the Citizen website are hilarious.. UFOs, conspiracy theories, etc.

UPDATE: Search called off for plane thought lost in river

OTTAWA — Officials called off the hunt Tuesday afternoon for a plane that was feared crashed in the Ottawa River near the Deschenes Rapids after concluding that there's no wreckage under the water.

The search began after several witnesses from both the Ontario and Quebec sides of the river reported seeing what appeared to be a light aircraft hit the water near the Britannia Yacht Club just before 10 p.m., Monday night. Some also reported hearing an explosion.

But after extensive work on and under the water, searchers determined that there's no airplane wreckage there. They did detect a large mass on the riverbed, but closer investigation found it to be a rock or a pile of logs, the searchers said.

If a plane had gone down in the river, said police spokesman Const. Alain Boucher, there should by now be some other evidence — pieces of wreckage floating downstream, for instance — but none has been seen, he said. Furthermore, no planes or people have been reported missing.

"Nothing appears to have gone down last night," Boucher said.

Typical statement from someone trying to deny that their ass is a little sore this morning :haha:
