Great thread. I was in a band about 6 years ago that played the White Rabbit on Monday nights for a little while. I don't have any fond memories of that place.

Very enjoyable. I like the grit and the glamour. Pics 65 thru 68 kind of look like an abandoned unfinished urban renewal project.

Thanks for sharing.

Those ruins were going to be an apartment development and have been hanging around for at least 5 years. With River North breaking ground officially in 5 months, it should see some new life as another Southtown-style "tin siding and chain link railing" condo/apartment building.

I think he (Ed Cross) is supposed to start "construction" in October.

Great shots. I've seen it before, but why am I still somewhat surprised when I see this much historic architecture in Texas?

Very nice El Cid.

Looks like the area just south of DT and just north of Trinity Un., is that right. I'm not too familiar with that area but I think the White Rabbit is in that area also.

Always wanted to drive around and look that area over. Glad you posted some photos here.

As for the band, they were OK, but they sound like a nine inch nails wanabe (sorry), and nine inch nails are better.

Go San Antonio!!! I love how in other Texas cities (talking about the CBDs here), we have to have all these discussions about how to bring people into downtown, how to create a more "walkable" environment, how to encourage street-level retail. San Antonio's been winning at that game for a LOOONG time. Nice to see.

I don't know why you would be, I mean it's not like Texas was just built yesterday.

Did you assume that maybe a lot was torn down during that "Urban Renewal" period of the 1950s and 1960s?

Oh and BTW, I've never been to Texas.

Well it is over 300 years old. The San Fernando Cathedral in downtown was started in 1631. It's the 2nd oldest cathedral in the United States and the oldest church in Texas.

Great pics;
The 3 homes in pic 61 might be some of the last pics taken of those homes. They are to be torn down to make room for a Medical Office building.

Pics 63-68 are of a "stalled" project. The original developer and the new one traded (http://www.mysanantonio.com/news/local_news/Development_eyes_October_restart.html)lawsuits, but Ed Cross is to finally start up the project at the beginning of the new fiscal year (http://blogs.mysanantonio.com/weblogs/downtown/2009/06/broadway-eyesore-could-see-con.html).

Because how could 8 out of 10 people who post on SSP be wrong? Believe your own eyes, and don't buy into the ignorant stereotypes.

That project will start up re-construction in October.

Here are the new renderings on this "long story" development:

A lot of the homes in the pictures are in the Dignowity Hills neighborhood on the near east side. It's a neighborhood in transition.

a typically exciting LSyd thread... I tend to dismiss San Antone... or at least forget about it... but it appears to have some interesting built environments downtown... and I love the grit
