This weekend, CALTRANS is at it again. They've completely taken the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge out of service to remove a segment of the old eastern span and graft in a new detour segment.
I've been watching the progress reports online, and it's an amazing bit of engineering they're doing. While the bridge is out of service, they've also been giving her a good going over, in terms of inspection and maintenance.
Well, it looks like that paid off! They've found a cracked eyebar on the eastern cantilever span, which by itself would be severe enough to cause a shutdown of the bridge! However, they're all over it, working on a fix as we speak.
They're still hoping to be able to open the bridge again, on time at 5 am tuesday morning.
You can read all about it here:

and they're also on twitter. I must say, a project like this really makes exellent use of a service like Twitter, with all those progress reports and updates.
They've got pics and videos galore, with more being added all the time.
