This will be my thread on photos of the city of Pittsburgh, PA USA. I will be here until 2013 for college (U of Pittsburgh), so this will be my photo thread.
So I begin with this, welcome to Pittsburgh.

For today, I will start with some photos of the University of Pittsburgh campus.
The Cathedral of Learning, sticking out behind the Towers
http://i29.tinypic.com/2cmoiee.jpg
The Towers, triplet dorm buildings. After staying in one during my orientation, I am glad that I do not live in them, despite them being my top choice for living. They have thin walls (so it seems to me). During my night in them, there was construction going on nonstop all night, and it was very loud.

Good call on the University of Pittsburgh!~ I think it's a great value. Good school for affordable cost and it's urban location means you will never be bored in your 4 yrs. Good luck.

Waiting for the bus late Sunday night. Downtown is a ghost town after the work day ends, and on the weekends is empty and is an urban paradise devoid of people:

It's interesting how people have the perception of Downtown Pittsburgh as being a "ghost town" after hours... Sunday night of Labor Day Weekend is certainly the deadest time one could be there... the southern half of Downtown (featured in your photos) empties out as it's rather devoid of after-hours-oriented businesses... but the Cultural District has become increasingly lively in the evenings... it's a work in progress and has certainly improved in recent years...

Well from what I saw in the business district, it was empty. All the stores where closed and the largest crowds I saw were at bus stops.

seriously man, check out downtown on a couple more occasions such as some weeknights like friday; Or any of the many days that downtown activities are planned for thyos who wish to participate.
Some nights are really breathtaking with huge traffic jams of taxis and pedestrian traffic, not stampeding the hockey game but descending upon the cultural ditrict with plays, performaces & live music, as well as all the occompanying high end eateries.

Lol yeah, like during any fireworks night or during the festivals. It took me 45 minutes to go 1 mile on the 4th of July at 11pm. The streets and sidewalks were as busy as Manhattan, so yeah it does have its moments.

Haha, none of us here to fight, they're just giving suggestions. Since you're into photography you may also want to check out one of the gallery crawls and photo walks that go on downtown, and in other neighborhoods. Here's a link to a Flickr group that hosts a lot of them, and advertises for other groups holding them.

Great shots!
I actually went to Pitt for a year before leaving for (what I considered to be) greener pastures. You're lucky to be living somewhere besides the towers. They're nice from the outside, but pretty awful on the inside. Hope your time at Pitt goes better than mine did!

Thursday during G20. There was not as much going on downtown as I hoped, but in other parts of the city, there was major drama. In Lawrencville, mass mob of people clashed with police, elsewhere businesses got windows busted. Here in Oakland, on Pitt's campus at around midnight, there was a riot and police threw teargas (I was not there, just what I heard). Also, Obama's motorcade held up the bus I was on for 15-20 minutes in downtown.
And this morning, as I was trying to get to the only class that I had (Spanish, ruined my potential 4 day weekend), there was a crowd of people walking down 5th Ave towards downtown.
We begin with photos of downtown, without protesters. Streets were empty and some businesses were closed and boarded up:

The three T subway stations were closed, trains only came into downtown as far as First Ave Station (this is Gateway Plaza):

Now, the protests. I saw two, one for Tibet's freedom from China, and one for the legalization of Weed.

I could but they would be very noisy and take up a lot of space. Like I said, I really want a new camera that takes better low light/night photos. I love Canon and Pansonic, and if they make a compact with long zoom zoom (like Panny compacts currently have), HD video, manual controls, and a good sensor like Sony's Exmor R Cmos sensor, then I'll be all over it and able to show you larger versions of my photos.

This (http://www.dpreview.com/news/0908/09080601sonycmos.asp) is the sensor. I had a Canon A620 in the past that was great, but I lost it on the way back from a family reunion in Alaska (was a great trip, but I lost 2 cameras on it :( ). Anyways, the camera I want is the replacement to the current Panasonic ZS3/TZ7 (due out in February) which already is great. If all Panny does is add the new Sony sensor and manual controls, I will be very happy.

Light rail tracks on Arlington Ave. the Trolley line is the 52 Allentown, slated to be renamed the "Brown Line". This route serves a vital link to this community since in the winter snow and ice can make this section of the city inaccessible to cars and the bus routes that also run on this street. It only runs a few times during the morning and evening rush hours though.

So I rode the 41E bus up to Mt. Washington again, this time took my new camera, a Panasonic ZS3 which has a wider angle than my TZ3. The unfortunate thing is that on some of the wide angle shots, there is blur on the edges.

Wonderful updates:cheers:
Was it a cold night when you took those photos? That may have had something to do with the blur on the edges of your photographs. My camera, when it's anywhere around 35º or colder, the shutter doesn't work correctly, and it creates a blurring effect around the edges. I solved the problem by simply keeping my camera tucked in under my clothing, keeping it warm, until right before I take the shot.
Oh, and Hail to Pitt!

Ellsworth Ave in the Shadyside section of Pittsburgh has some nice homes. This area appears to be a bit wealthy, is close to Pitt and Carnegie Mellon, and has the 71C bus route connecting it with East Wilkinsburg, Oakland, and downtown Pittsburgh (and this route is due to become a Rapid Route in early 2010 meaning more service).
So here are my photos of Ellesworth Ave:

Great thread. I love the density and especially the spectacular topography of Pittsburgh.
I've always been taken aback, though, by the number of deteriorated neighborhoods in the city that show up in various web forums (of course, there are many areas that are very nice). But regarding the many deteriorated areas, what kinds of urban renewal are taking place? How do things compare with, say, 20 years ago? I.e., are a lot of improvements taking place, as in most American cities?

Yeah, there is some. For example the East Liberty area is going through a bit of a renaissance with new stores and restaurants like a Borders and Walgreens, plus it is getting a 2 story Target (http://pittsburgh.bizjournals.com/pittsburgh/stories/2009/11/16/story6.html) and lots of other redevelopment (http://www.post-gazette.com/pg/10015/1028380-28.stm).

Mckeesport. I rode the 61C bus down to Mckeesport. This is a city down river from Pittsburgh. I had heard about how dangerous and run down this city was (like Camden, NJ across from my hometown of Philadelphia), so I had to go check it out.

These are from 5 days ago. I got covered in snow because I was only wearing a hoodie and no jacket. This was from my fail trek out to the West End, walked the wrong way and by the time I go to the Overlook it was almost dark, and my hands were frozen (no gloves). Anyway's I went back days later, and those photos are coming tomorrow.

The city looks great from above. On street level in the neighborhoods... rather depressing and dreary, especially this time of year. Thanks for the new photos.
