An Island Frozen in Time and Price

My report last weekend on Galiano Island, British Columbia―“An Island Frozen in Time and Price”―marks the beginning of three weeks of B.C.-focused Frugal Traveler coverage. Each Wednesday, check in here to read about Asian-fusion cuisine, Vancouver’s budget hotels and a cheaper alternative to Whistler. (Yes, it exists.) And feel free to discuss the Galiano Island story below.

Cheaper alternative to Whistler: Mt. Washington. 30-40 minute drive from the nearest major airport vs. a few hundred kilometers into the hills.

FROM the ice-cold waters of the Strait of Georgia

Man, they are really drumming up this great white north thing, they fail to mention that the waters of the Straight of Georgia are the warmest waters of the pacific Coast until one hits the Baja area.

^not around Victoria it isn't. I've heard that the difference between the water temperature is 3 degrees between January and July and I believe it. Jump in to the ocean in July or August around Victoria and your nads will get smaller than you ever thought they could. Around Vancouver the water warms up a lot in summer though so if they are talking about Victoria, they are pretty accurate. It has something to do with the currents in the Strait.

The water around Victoria is the Juan De Fuca Straight, not the Georgia Straight

^Okay, we'll just pretend I never said that.

Wouldn't Grouse, Seymour and Cypress also be cheaper than Whistler (and a lot closer to Vancouver)?

Water on the sunshine coast tends to be a couple degrees warmer than the water up against Vancouver Island. Even in summer, when going out for a swim the water gets right cold once you pass the drop-off. Real bitch when you are out sailing and you capsize your fucking boat. >_>
