Wow,.I just checked my house and my car is parked on the road (hopefully not getting a ticket) and they blurred out my license plate. When you finally see your own neighbourhood it looks very unusual.
The pictures on my street look like last April (I have a new side door on my garage that was put in last December) and one of my neighbours is raking her lawn from all the winter debris.

I think I might actually be in the picture. My garage door is open and there is a fuzzy human form coming out of it.
Looks like my area was done sometime in May or early June.

Mine was April I'm sure but other areas I've looked at are in May or June. My old place in Toronto was definately May as the trees are in blossom.

Yep, my street was done late May/early June, the lilacs are still in bloom and I have a large mound of dirt in my driveway that I know I didn't move until at least mid-June.

Well, I can see myself on Google Street View. I remember a day that I came home after work in March and as I went on the Ottawa Citizen website, a user submitted a picture of the Google car passing by near where I work.
Although I can see myself, I do not remember the car passing by. I was pretty far away from the road though.

My house was done at the start of May, likely on a weekend. My magnolia tree was flowering, the car was in the driveway and the garage was open.
Behold... my "favourite" piece of so-called infill. A semi-McMansion that pretty much fills the entire building envelope (and some people on here object to FARs! Ya, well, until someone comes up with a better idea this is what you can get without them):
http://maps.google.ca/maps?f=q&hl=en&geocode=&q=Ottawa&ie=UTF8&om=1&hq=&hnear=Ottawa,+Ottawa+Division,+Ontario&ll=45.395408,-75.759391&spn=0.001413,0.002411&t=h&z=19&layer=c&cbll=45.395313,-75.759333&panoid=EDKDYdIevJ84K9IGwphABg&cbp=13,106.92,,0,5.3
This pair of 3000+ sq.ft. semis replaced a tiny cottage that also happened to have an enormous tree out front. Though it was on a large lot, I'd wager that its overall ecological footprint was substantially less than either of these. There's space for a total of 10 cars to be parked between them. My guess is that it has at least 75% impermeable surfaces too; the neighbour laid down a gravel driveway to lower his run-off volume only to have this thing built soon after - and now he gets their run-off in his driveway.
The sad thing is that the design is fairly good and if it was several units rather than just two it might even be defensible.
And it's not like there aren't examples of good semi-detached infill in the area, either. Here are two such examples, side-by-side:
http://maps.google.ca/maps?f=q&hl=en&geocode=&q=Ottawa&ie=UTF8&om=1&t=h&layer=c&cbll=45.392355,-75.75932&panoid=b0UToJpbb2cvrWMfo_fq5A&cbp=13,94.62,,0,4.4&hq=&hnear=Ottawa,+Ottawa+Division,+Ontario&ll=45.392528,-75.758688&spn=0.002825,0.004823&z=18
Some older three-storey units, a semi and a three-unit townhouse; the style is a bit basic but it nonetheless works and they even kept the trees:
http://maps.google.ca/maps?f=q&hl=en&geocode=&q=Ottawa&ie=UTF8&om=1&t=h&layer=c&cbll=45.399592,-75.75685&panoid=eThrYLGO21uRCxIw6y8KcQ&cbp=13,6.2,,0,4.6&hq=&hnear=Ottawa,+Ottawa+Division,+Ontario&ll=45.399544,-75.75702&spn=0.001413,0.002411&z=19
And this is what I think is one of the neatest infills I've seen anywhere nearby; it did have the advantage of having a bit of space to work with rather than just a standard lot:
http://maps.google.ca/maps?f=q&hl=en&geocode=&q=Ottawa&ie=UTF8&om=1&t=h&layer=c&cbll=45.399839,-75.75247&panoid=zfEpUbzfS0yn_By79TK9Pg&cbp=13,352.95,,0,5&hq=&hnear=Ottawa,+Ottawa+Division,+Ontario&ll=45.399862,-75.752312&spn=0.001412,0.002411&z=19
A couple more from Westboro:
The Exchange and Westboro Station (but not the Transitway one), framing the entrance to Westboro:
http://maps.google.ca/maps?f=q&hl=en&geocode=&q=Ottawa&ie=UTF8&om=1&t=h&layer=c&cbll=45.389443,-75.75901&panoid=TiviLrYK-UzM3LxMId7EaQ&cbp=13,51.22,,0,-7.51&hq=&hnear=Ottawa,+Ottawa+Division,+Ontario&ll=45.389279,-75.759289&spn=0.001413,0.002411&z=19
Rochester Field and the possible route for LRT from Dominion into the Richmond/Byron corridor:

I think it won't be long until Kirchoffer is lined with those kinds of houses, especially with this precedent. The reason it's happening there and not as much on Berkley is the value of the land and proximity to the beach. A developer buying a half million dollar plus bungalow in Westboro Beach is going to want to raze it and build as high end as the market can take.
There's this one on Roosevelt that has every square inch of front yard paved!
http://maps.google.ca/maps?f=q&source=s_q&hl=en&geocode=&q=344+Roosevelt+Ave,+Ottawa,+ON,+Canada&sll=49.891235,-97.15369&sspn=35.320633,64.160156&ie=UTF8&hq=&hnear=344+Roosevelt+Ave,+Ottawa,+Ottawa+Division,+Ontario&z=16&iwloc=A&layer=c&cbll=45.392075,-75.757883&panoid=CJTSjRk0fEuGXZeunqQH1g&cbp=12,60.15,,1,8.51
:previous:
Oh, that one. Sad too, since the styling isn't too bad. I think the porch-over-garage is a pretty good way of mitigating the effect of the garage doors.
Last I checked they *still* hadn't repaired the freaking sidewalk there, either.
About Kirchoffer, I was really surprised when the two cottages next to it were put up for sale at the same time by the same agent that they apparently weren't bought together by one developer. That would have been a really good opportunity to put in a 4-6 unit townhouse terrace and also mitigate the effect of that semi at the same time. Instead, I imagine it'll just end up being another pair of semis (or is that a pair of pair of semis?).
Great links...I gather you are not crazy about some infills in Westboro.
Love that last link...the blurring technology blurred the wheels of the white car but not the driver.

Yep, not too crazy about some infills. The problem is that putting in gigantic and ugly infills tends to reduce any community goodwill towards them. In the late 80s and throughout the 90s we got a number of semis coming in and few people objected to them because they were properly massed and added to the general eclectic feel of the area. But recently there has been a tendency towards gigantic semis that just look overwhelming from the street (and people's back yards too - I wouldn't want to live behind that thing either).
I imagine OMB hearings are about to get a lot more interesting. But on the other hand it also has the potential for developers of showing that three-storey infills could be preferable to deep two-storey infills. The fact that a garage is that much less prominent on a three-storey façade is a definite advantage, as is the fact that houses that aren't as deep don't have such prominent roofs. You don't appreciate those in a simple elevation drawing but it's so noticeable as you approach and can see part of the side of a house. So, at the end of the day, if it means developers have to start making better designs then it could well be an improvement in the end.

The other new feature I find really neat is the addition of layered user photos. Most of the ones for Ottawa seem to be concentrated around Wellington Street/Parliament Hill. Maybe the avid photographers in this forum should get their pictures integrated into the system.

^ I've got about 300 hits off a picture of Bank and Wellington since Google street view went live.
I thought you had to add them to a Panaramio (sp?) account though, but all of the referrals came from Street view.

Where are you hosting the photo that Google is picking up?

I'm hosting it on flickr.
The stats say the referrals came from maps.google.com.. but when I click the referral link it just brings me to the main page. Not sure exactly where people are finding the photo (I can't see it anywhere on that link Kitchissippi provided), but the hits are coming from there.

If you mouse over the top left hand side of the street view page on that link, a small inset photo appears labelled "user photos". If you navigate close to the location you took the picture, yours will probably pop up

How dooes it located that? Is there a GPS trace in every picture or does Google read the tag to
all those images?

My guess is that it probably uses tags as a basis. Quite a few photos are also tagged with GPS coordinates, so it would likely be fairly simple to figure out that photos tagged with "war museum ottawa" are all located in the same location as long as at least one has a GPS coordinate.
Microsoft is actually working on technology which identifies landmarks in the photo and locates them from that information. I saw a demonstration of it awhile ago, and I believe that it is even capable of generating three dimensional models of the landmark from multiple photo sources.

Hwy 15 @ Smiths Falls Subdivision crossing (http://maps.google.ca/maps?f=q&source=s_q&hl=en&geocode=&q=Smiths+Falls,+ON&sll=44.919112,-76.025305&sspn=0.045826,0.077162&gl=ca&ie=UTF8&hq=&hnear=Smiths+Falls,+Lanark+County,+Ontario&ll=44.915343,-76.012945&spn=0.020605,0.077162&t=h&z=14&layer=c&cbll=44.919087,-76.025263&panoid=2GApTJlrpe0iJOQyIsj-Sw&cbp=11,198.06,,0,5)
I think this is the old (CP) station, on Victoria Ave. (http://maps.google.ca/maps?f=q&source=s_q&hl=en&geocode=&q=Smiths+Falls,+ON&sll=44.919112,-76.025305&sspn=0.045826,0.077162&gl=ca&ie=UTF8&hq=&hnear=Smiths+Falls,+Lanark+County,+Ontario&ll=44.905344,-76.017494&spn=0.010304,0.038581&z=15&layer=c&cbll=44.90534,-76.017478&panoid=-7o9VtkmX-0bbO3C5YYa2Q&cbp=11,42.06,,0,-1.88)
The Railway Museum in Smiths Falls at the old CN Station - pan to the right and note that the tracks still go across the street, literally to nowhere. (http://maps.google.ca/maps?f=q&source=s_q&hl=en&geocode=&q=Smiths+Falls,+ON&sll=44.919112,-76.025305&sspn=0.045826,0.077162&gl=ca&ie=UTF8&hq=&hnear=Smiths+Falls,+Lanark+County,+Ontario&ll=44.903064,-76.024575&spn=0.010305,0.038581&z=15&layer=c&cbll=44.901073,-76.028519&panoid=l-cWfR-g-NxFv70PYYIVDw&cbp=11,359.44,,0,5)
One of the oddest sights around:
The counterweight railway drawbridge over the Rideau Canal in Smiths Falls permanently locked in the up position. (http://maps.google.ca/maps?f=q&source=s_q&hl=en&geocode=&q=Smiths+Falls,+ON&sll=44.919112,-76.025305&sspn=0.045826,0.077162&gl=ca&ie=UTF8&hq=&hnear=Smiths+Falls,+Lanark+County,+Ontario&ll=44.895981,-76.026549&spn=0.010306,0.038581&z=15&layer=c&cbll=44.895987,-76.026553&panoid=_3Sz3uKpxs9OjppXcTdrIw&cbp=11,283.25,,0,7.8)
It's too bad that Canadian Northern took this line to Napanee rather than Kingston, because had they gone to Kingston instead it would in all likelihood still be in operation, providing faster trips to Toronto. Of course doing that now has been made more difficult...
Highway sprawl on the railway corridor at Hwy 15 south of Smiths Falls (http://maps.google.ca/maps?f=q&source=s_q&hl=en&geocode=&q=Smiths+Falls,+ON&sll=44.919112,-76.025305&sspn=0.045826,0.077162&gl=ca&ie=UTF8&hq=&hnear=Smiths+Falls,+Lanark+County,+Ontario&ll=44.892485,-76.02994&spn=0.020613,0.077162&z=14&layer=c&cbll=44.89248,-76.029938&panoid=jSlPXOkt5ZJ5TVL69y9xmA&cbp=11,18.34,,1,2.35)

On top of the massive streetview update, we just got some new Google Earth aerial imagery for Ottawa (not in Google Maps yet). Imagery date is Sept 30, 2008 (looks to be newer than the 2008 stuff on EMAPS). Highway 7, Kanata Lakes, Soho West, Fairwinds, Mondrian, HPII.... lots of changes throughout the city.
http://www.gearthblog.com/blog/archives/2010/02/new_google_earth_imagery_-_february.html
It also goes pretty far in Quebec... check out the A-50 extension!
edit: even better, it looks like large swaths of Southern Ontario and Quebec have new satellite imagery. Can't really see too much compared to orthophotos, but much better than what was there before.

So the trackwork I identified is indeed part of it... more like the approaches. It seems kind of wide for just a second track all that way out from the station site itself though and it seems to be wide "on the wrong side" if it's for parking, unless VIA has decided to shove parking further from the road (?).
Do you have any idea why they're moving the station at all and why here? If anyone had any ambitions of using the CP Belleville Sub for passenger service to Perth or beyond this station is still in the wrong place (it would have to be even further out of town, beyond the Hwy 15 crossing). It seems really retrograde to pull an Ottawa or Kingston on yet another community.

Wow..I like rear laneways conceptually, but this is going to have serious snow removal issues. You need to leave more space, or just do single car garages or something.

Woohoo! We can now get down to the 20 m scale zoom-level and not just the 50 m scale zoom-level (sorry, I don't have any better way to describe it, but anyone who uses it regularly should know or be able to figure out what I mean).
October is a nice time to have footage since the vegetation isn't crazy but it's not bare looking either - and it's kind of colourful.
Looking at the Park & Ride lots, the imagery looks to have been taken on a weekend, and probably not Thanksgiving since retail parking lots are well-used. I think it was on a Saturday since two O-Trains are in operation (the southbound train is already at Carling whilst the northbound has just left Confederation... they could add another station at Gladstone...). Time of day looks to be right around noon.

The Smiths Falls planner I interviewed had no idea why it was being moved. The track work you found has since been completed, as with the future platforms. The only parts not built yet are the station (which will consist of 5 seats, a vending machine, water fountain, and washroom), and 21 parking spots. They could do the track work before site plan approval because rail lines are a federal jurisdiction.

Updating bad pictures perhaps, and/or collecting more rural areas not covered well (they mostly only have the main arterials in the rural areas).

I ran into the Google Street View driver at a parking lot of a Starbucks today. They have been updating and expanding on Ottawa etc since April and are due to wrap up in a week. From there they have to proof the imagery and eventually it will get uploaded. The driver I spoke to had been assigned along with another fellow, the area from the west edge of Montreal, to Sudbury to Kingston.

If you check the Google Street View images, they seem to have been updated and are dated 2011 and 2012.
Notable changes that you'll see include the new Highway 7 to Carleton Place, the newly opened parts of Autoroute 50 (except for the part that just opened this week) as well as the addition of many rural roads that had not been done in the past.

-some private residential roads have been mapped. Residents didn't to mind though

Probably the fact that Prince of Wales was widened to just the other side of his line of trees...
What gets me is that he has added some large trees somehow. Perhaps they came from the copse to the left (2009 image) that is now in the road and it was done by the contractor.

Use the "Report A Problem" link. It might be a problem with the image file or they can take note of it for the next time they send their cameras to Ottawa.
I've reported a few errors and omissions over the years and they usually get fixed.
