The historic Johnson Street Bridge in Victoria, the first span on the City's Inner Harbour, has been a contentious issue lately after the City of Victoria announced it no longer wanted to fund bridge repairs and would seek $63-million to replace the bascule bridge, one of the last remaining bridges of its kind in the world.
After the province dodged financial support during a round of stimulus funding announcements about a month ago and the federal government indicated it had no monies allocated to the project, a surprise funding announcement was made this morning.
The feds are contributing $21-million to the project. That still leaves $42-million unaccounted for and if not secured through provincial contributions or through the help of other municipalities that comprise the capital regional district, Victoria tax payers could be on the hook.
