Ottawa may not build the tallest, but it has great density, as this photo demonstrates:

Downtown Ottawa definitely has that 'big city' feel.

I've added in a list of cities in Canada that are eligable for inclusion on the list but have not presented any information yet.

For the most part it is incorporated cities, however due to some provinces not having formal cities I also included some communities with a population of over 50'000. All provinces and territories (excl. PEI and NS) have a community that can still be added. Also in municipalities individually recognized communities over 50'000 are welcome to be added. And if there is a project worth listing I'm open to adding in counties that have over 50'000 (at my discretion though). The county will not be listed if a town/city in it is already on the list. An example of that would be King's County here in Nova Scotia. It has over 50'000 people but no community within it is listed.

This is probably the tallest underconstruction in St. John's. It's a hotel condominium that is 9 floors and 13.9 meters high, due to it sloping down a hill it has several different heights to meet the city's requirements.

I'm not exactly sure how it works but where it is on the slope no part of the building is actually over 5 storeys though the total number of storeys is 9 from the very bottom floor on Water Street to the top floor on Duckworth.

Architype had on theSt. John's Project Threads main page (http://forum.skyscraperpage.com/showthread.php?t=145930) that "the building proposal is 7+ stories at maximum cross section (approx. 19 meters), with a total of 9 levels on sloping ground." but the building was modified a few months ago as well. I'll see if he can explain it better because I'm just confusing myself now.

Not sure if you count excavation work as under construction or not until they start pouring the concrete. If excavation work doesn't count, then Stone Church is still the tallest. Good Shepherd Square is also under construction and has two 8 floor towers which are the same height as Stone Church.

In my mind once a project is approved and the fence is up, I consider it to be under construction, although i'm sure a big debate will ensue over this since many people consider the first shovel hitting the ground the first sign of construction.

As somebody stated, at 9 stories it can't be just 13.9 m high. That figure is just the height from above Battery Road, (the highest elevation at the back of the site). The actual height is about 15 m at each end, a maximum of about 22m in the middle, with the total height between the entrance and the highest roof being about 27 m (confusing?).

It looks as though Montreal's tallest building under construction has changed. Although Altitude was slated to be the tallest building constructed in Montreal since 1992, construction on the ~40-floor Marriott seems to be getting under way (we'll likely get better renderings and clarification on the actual height in a few weeks). The weird thing about this project is there is nothing about it online (aside from MTLURB and SSP). The only information we have is from the renderings Gilbert obtained (they look old because they were photocopied then scanned), and vague descriptions provided by the parking lot attendants and now the construction workers.

They have started ripping up the pavement of what was previously a parking lot in prime real-estate along René-Lévesque Blvd (corner Bleury).

A few changes:

Montreal's tallest U/C s no longer Altitude, but iis instead the Marriott: 40 floors - not sure exact height. The site the Marriott will be located on is currently undergoing site preparation (if that counts).

In Longueuil: The Blu Rivage is complete. It can be removed from the list. The next tallest project in Longueuil is now the SAX Longueuil which is 7 floors. I will have to confirm if it is actually under U/C.

In Brossard, the tallest U/C is the Tysel Tower, which will be 14 floors.

Quebec city has a new tallest U/C. Crane went up today for the city's second tallest (Ste-Foy's new tallest), Complexe Jules Dallaire tower II at 28 stories.

The tower's underground parking and first 4 floors were built last year so its only upwards from now. Tower I, at 17 stories, will gain another 7 floors for a total of 23, somewhere after tower II is done.

Where is Edmonton? How do we have places like Summerside PEI but not Edmonton?

Also lots need to be updated for Vancouver and Toronto's suburbs.

Surrey - Ultra: 40Fl 102M
Coquitlam - Oasis 39Fl ??M
Richmond - Wall centre is done, replace with any number of other 13 floor developments.

Toronto suburbs I don't know as well but I'm sure a Toronto fourmer could help fill in the gaps.

lol, funny.

But seriously, I don't think anyone here is against the use of spires. They're just against having them count towards a buildings height.

Personally I think that instead of having 3 different standards with the most weight given to height to architectural top. There should only be two categories and equal weight given to both;

One for Roof Height
Which would height to the roof or ceiling of the highest floor (occupied or mechanical floor)

And one for Pinnacle Height
Which would be to the absolute highest point on a building. The type of structure; antenna, spire, fins, etc. that provides any additional height above the roof height could be noted.

Canadian Buildings would be ranked as follows (including u/c buildings);

Roof Height standard;
1. 978ft - FCP
2. 902ft - Scotia
3. 874ft - Aura
4. 784ft - Commerce Court West
5. 776ft - Trump
6. 774ft - BOW
7. 768ft - ICE East
8. 745ft - TD Canada Trust Tower
9. 731ft - TD Center
10. 715ft - Bay Adelaide Center West

Pinnacle Height standard;
1. 1,165ft - FCP (antenna)
2. 942ft - Commerce Court West (antenna)
3. 909ft - Trump (spire)
4. 902ft - Scotia
5. 874ft - Aura
6. 863ft - TD Canada Trust Tower (spire)
7. 820ft - Tour CIBC (antenna)
8. 774ft - BOW
9. 768ft - ICE East
10. 756ft - 1250 René-Lévesque (spire)

On second thought I'd say the roof height would be more meaningful, but there still should be a category to consider pinnacle height.

The spire argument is tough when you have buildings like Empire State and Chrysler. But when you are on the roof of Scotia and you have look almost 130' down at Trump you have to really question the notion of these stick spire/antennas.

The_Architect
Nov 2, 2011, 5:07 PM
I think they should have 2 categories, one roof height the other the tallest point on the building.

Here is the website for St. John's current tallest under construction building.

There is information, pictures and even a video of the outside. They've changed the building in the front however and it doesn't look great.

lol, funny.

But seriously, I don't think anyone here is against the use of spires. They're just against having them count towards a buildings height...

Indeed I'm quite aware that people love spires... look at the reverence of the spire in all those unofficial Trump threads.

Just that pretty much any architectural appurtenance on a building outside of Toronto is viewed with scorn on SSP/SSC.

Does nobody know how tall The Pearl in Edmonton is going to be? Its 35 fl, gotta be at least 105-110m? Which would pump it up to 8th on this list.
