It's extremely deep (that's what he said) because when they restarted construction, they approved an additional two floors of underground parking... so that's why.

You can take Sydney off the list, probably for a while. The hotel is completed and there's nothing over 2 storeys being built at the moment. There are some large projects coming down the line, just not tall ones at the moment, even by area standards.

For St. John's, it's the new Fortis Building. If it's not the tallest U/C, its location several metres uphill from the bulk of our downtown towers will certainly make it look like the tallest.

Here is its information/diagram: SkyScraperPage Info: Fortis Building (http://skyscraperpage.com/cities/?buildingID=94292)

And here is where it will be located (the farthest construction site to the left):

For Halifax I would go with another project. The Craigmore has the most floor count but the Citadel Hotel Towers that are going up are likelier taller. They are both 15 floors and 49m tall. The Citadel project has ground-floor commercial and will be used as hotels which usually mean higher ceiling heights and therefore more height.

Also in the next few weeks work is going to start on the TD Tower Expansion. This will become our new Tallest U/C provided footprint expansion of existing buildings is allowed. This will have all the makings of a new tower construction (excavation, foundation, crane, new exterior, ect) but I will leave it to someone else to decide.

The CMHR is looking sweeeeeeet.

Here are a few I took this past week. I was really impressed by how great it looks. It holds out the promise of being a work of architecture that will stand the test of time, unlike some other 'starchitecture' museums.

The cloud glass looks better in person than it comes off in some photographs.

Neat. I'm curious, is the steel trucked in from the mainland (Halifax?) via ferries or does St. John's take the occassional container ship direct from China?

I'm pretty certain Newfoundland is a net exporter of Limestone so the concrete is likely made locally. I am surprised the building isn't primarily concrete.

We do have a busy industrial port for a city our size. There's almost always an Oceanex container ship being loaded/unloaded in St. John's (http://www.flickr.com/photos/signalhillhiker/8064900868/). Whether they come from overseas or the Canadian/American mainland, I don't know.

In this specific case, I think the steel comes from Halifax. On the project thread for 351 Water Street, someone posted this comment:

I'd like to say thank you for all the nice pictures. I'm lead checker working with the structural steel fabricator (in Halifax) and it's certainly nice to see the building's progress.

The main Oceanex ships routes are Montreal-St. John's and Halifax-St. John's.

Soon the tallest will be Fenwick and possibly the King's Wharf main tower. Not sure which will be taller. Fenwick will be 106 m.

Two of those three are just major structural additions though. I'm not sure if the majority of people on the forum would see them as a tower under construction. I would though, considering TD is doubling its size (and then some?) and I believe Fenwick is adding at least a good 30 percent to its current size and increasing its height by 10 meters. Within five years Atlantic Canada will have its first two 100 plus meter towers! Yayyy!

I'd consider both "construction" since they include substantial structural additions and increases in height. They're not just re-claddings or simple renovation jobs. In any case the most important part is that both TD and Fenwick are ugly and they should look at lot nicer when the work is completed.

Here is a picture of the TD crane. It shows how unusually narrow the tower is. I also find the mirrored glass cladding pretty unattractive, and the ground floor of the building isn't very good either.

Here is a picture I took with my cell phone from the 5th Floor of the Maritime Centre.

The thing was on hold forever! And when they finally got the leases they needed we lost a couple floors. Overall, I'm quite happy with the project though. Anything that can distract from its monstrous neighbour Place Bell (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Place_Bell). Place Bell is actually a very high quality building filled with lawyers etc. but the ginormous box design is terrible.

It's also a large office tower despite being only 27 storeys tall. Scotia Centre in Calgary is about 50% taller but has only 2/3 the floor space.

27 floor boxes are pretty much the worst of both worlds. They're still overwhelming in scale, but not tall enough to be interesting. I don't think the height restrictions in Ottawa make a lot of sense in their current incarnation.

It's all a question of perspective. A 20 storeys tower in a small town can be as impressive as a 50 storeys tower in a large city.

That is correct, also corroborated by Tone's picture of Le Havre de l'Estuaire in Rimouski above.Quite impressive indeed. Is that 2 new towers?

I've always wondered why Rimouski, a city of barely 60,000 way up north is so quick to embrace highrises when 99.% of every other Quebec community fights tooth and nail to avoid having them. Interesting.

2 new towers yes. A twin 12 storeys towers here would equal to two 1000 stories towers in Montreal all proportions kept!:haha:

I think the main reasons why there's many tall buildings here is the geographical setting being next to a large body of water and the relatively dense built form but most importantly, the views!

A line that would make anyone from a larger urban center chuckle. :P

And I'm sure European and Asian cities scoff at your idea of public transit... And the Japanese and Chinese can hardly breath from laughing so hard at what you call density. There is always someone somewhere who can find something with which they can look down upon others.

In any case this year another 10-15 storey tower (I don't think the height is final yet) is set to begin construction in the gap between the Mosaic Tower and FCC turning it into even more of a corridor of sorts. You can see the gap best in the 3rd pic. It's being built by the same firm that built/owns the twins, Mosaic Tower and numerous other office towers in Regina's core. I'm sure we will get some more finalised design concepts in the next little while.

Beautiful update of Ottawa's tallest (150 Elgin - Performance Court) from http://www.facebook.com/photo.php?pid=1084369&l=c096f133d9&id=333451070080431 (photos by Roy Grogan)

This baby's gonna fill a very visible gap in our skyline from a number of angles. Add to this project Tribeca and another new tower on Lisgar and we will start to see a nice balancing of Place Bell (the monolith in the photos below).

What do you expect from a city of 47 000? It's far better than any of our cities of similar size in any other province are doing.

They're fine. I've seen uglier towers going up in St. Leonard right here on the island. Hell, I've seen uglier ones rising by the handful during my trip to TO last week!

Great set of photos from Design-mind of Edmonton's The Pearl. Apparently glass started to be installed yesterday.

Some updates from yesterday. The glassless Pearl.
