BART ridership hits record with bridge closure

OAKLAND, Calif.—People are turning to public transportation in record numbers as the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge undegoes emergency repairs.
Bay Area Rapid Transit officials say more than 437,000 people rode their trains on Wednesday—more than on any single day in the system's 37-year history. The previous record for the system was set on Sept. 8, 2008, during Oakland Raiders and San Francisco Giants games.

Officials say they expect to set another record as the bridge remains closed for a second day. Workers are rushing to fix a section where a metal crossbar and two rods came crashing onto westbound lanes Tuesday.

Morning ridership between San Francisco and Oakland was up 60 percent Thursday as commuters sought to steer clear of the freeway congestion.

Let's hope ridership stays after that. Even 375,000/day would be a great target. BART has some of the best potential for increased ridership.

BART shows just how important it is to have an alternative to the car.

When California recovers from the financial mess it's in, hopefully residents will demand more transit.

Thats only half of the problem. We need to repair our dysfunctional legislature as well.

Jerry Brown wants to run again next year. Is he pro transit?

Not sure, actually. But I do know that he proposed the idea of the CHSR back in the 70's.
