The city council's zoning committee advanced Bill 63, which makes significant amendments to the Waikiki Special District rules, established in 1996.

The bill furthers redevelopment in Waikiki by allowing nonconforming properties to renovate and keep their nonconformities in exchange for open space. Under the bill, outdoor cafes, outdoor lighting and new height limits will be allowed without increasing density.

"This move makes major changes to the Waikiki Special District design guidelines to help further the exciting revitalization of Waikiki," said Charles Djou, chairman of the zoning committee.

A recent study found Waikiki produces 8 percent of Hawaii's gross domestic product and generates over 70,000 local jobs.

The full council will vote on the bill Nov. 5.

**Hmmm i'm not sure what the new height limits will be if the bill passes but will post it when i find out more info. :D
