*EDIT* Geez I'm an idiot, I mispelled Canadian in the title of this thread. Any mods wanna help out?
So basically I was inspired by this thread from SSC:
http://www.skyscrapercity.com/showthread.php?t=994659
I've only very recently become interested in this era of architecture. I think most people in general would write off the entire period as hideously fugly but now I'm slowly starting to see the merits and value of the buildings that were built during these two decades.
So let's see the best examples of 50s & 60s architecture from your city!
I'll start with Vancouver.

Nice. I love the 50s and 60s, even the bad examples like Tower Gardens. Great examples are some of the best architecture in my opinion. All photos courtesy of me.

Canada sure has some Gem's as far as this type of architecture is concerned. It's almost as if we are slowly going back to that style, but instead of using concrete, we are using glass and steel.

I know a lot of people hate the fact that the old station was abandoned, and the location of the new one sucks, but I do think it's an architectural gem.

Thunder Bay's architecture from that era is quite modest, except for the University (which is a massive, brutalist structure similar to SFU but less west-coasty) but I don't have any pictures of its main building. I think the problem people have with the era's architecture is that you have to be a bit educated to understand why the buildings look like they do, to appreciate the style. If you don't know anything about it, they look ... scary? But I think this might pass and 20 or 40 years from now we'll be scrambling to protect what is left of them, just as we have with the Victorian and Edwardian era buildings in the past few decades.
Fort William/Thunder Bay City Hall, as it appeared from 1964 to 2008.

It was renovated over the past year (http://www.flickr.com/photos/vidioman/4092184052/sizes/l/), it barely resembles what it once was. They used really bad materials but the design was actually pretty good. I like the way the light played on the facade of the council chambers.

City Hall Annex, the short building in the foreground, was built in 1959. I have recently come to appreciate it. The building behind it, Glengowan Apartments, was built in the mid 1960s as a Holiday Inn. Its architecture is confused--it has fluted pilasters and a balustraded (using the term loosely, mind you) roof line, but is sparse of most other details. It's like a half-assed attempt at modernism. Eager to design something contemporary but too scared to design something too contemporary.

This building was built in 1954 for St. Joseph's Hospital, to house nurses who were learning medicine at the hospital. In the 1970s it was renovated to house the Sister Margaret Smith Centre for Addictions. That centre recently moved to a new building across town, and this structure will be torn down in just a few days to make way for a new psychiatric hospital. The view up the walkway from Court Street (http://www.flickr.com/photos/vidioman/3231075986/) is really nice.

I love SFU, I was pretty giddy when my friends drove me up there this summer. Vid, you're right, we will be scrambling to protect these types buildings in a decade or two.
Many of the decent examples for Halifax are university buildings. Most of the grander buildings that I immediately thought of turned out to have been completed in the 70s.

What a spectacular thread. It is really quite startling to see how many of my favourite buildings in Canada fall into the category of postwar modernist.
amazing how we have devolved
Not necessarily - when that photo was taken, only the socioeconomic elite were present in that lounge. Those people can still be found waiting for planes in Esso Avitat or in the Maple Leaf Lounge.
The fact that air travel has opened up to the masses is a good thing, although I take your point that we could do with classier design in public spaces.

I was just watching a bio-documentary on Safdie the other night. He really has produced some gems.

I love Habitat and still don't understand why this concept wasn't reproduced and expanded around the country.

There were plans to do it in other parts of the world that lost interest or funding along the way.

found this interesting pic of a toronto proposal (from back in the 60's).
not built of course, but i'm kinda of shocked at such a bold development. looks like 70, 80 storey monsters! wow, very ambitious. (what were we/they thinking?)
