I need an old fashioned door latch with knobs and preferably the strike plate as well. The strike plate would be "Taller" than a modern one. Now that hobo hardware is closed, I don't know the best place to go hunting for one. Any ideas?
Kind of like this:

Habitat Re-Store, in both Hamilton & Burlington (and beyond if you are in the neighbourhood).

Also try Mr. Used on Barton. I got an old solid oak door there with the same type of hardware but with the crystal style door knob for $50 a couple years ago.

www.rejuvenation.com
it is expensive (simple latch and knob kit is about US$120) but one of the only places that i have found that still make em.
without hobo hardware, im not sure where else you could find reclaimed stuff locally. maybe somewhere in toronto?

:previous: I was going to suggest Rejuvenation also. Also great for period light fixtures. I found their prices quite reasonable compared to Restoration or Turn of the Century.

Cool, thanks guys - I will start with the used places. I agree that the best way may be to buy a door with the knob already in it.
We have a 100 year old house that unfortunately was "renovated" in the 70s and every door was removed and replaced with hollow veneer doors. UGH. THe only 2 wood doors left are being used in an attic reno so I figured I might as well start bringing the doors back to their glory from the top down!

So strange to see knobs like that nowadays. To me it's completely alien when I have to twist the knob to enter the washroom at the old Courthouse, downtown Mac campus.
Welcome to the forum reuben.

I would also recommend MR. USED. They have a lot of what was installed in area homes. Like someone else posted, I have been able to find exact doors to match the ones in my house for our reno a couple years ago. They have a bin full of door hardware for you to pick through as well.
This time of the year, wear a good coat! It might be inside, but it's cold in there!
We went with Rejuvenation for hardware, and it is VERY expensive. So we've been doing a door about every 6 months.

How about kitchen cabinets? I want to add more storage to my kitchen by adding about 6 feet of base cabinets with counter top. I thought there might be some building surplus stores or kitchen reno liquidation places around. Any suggestions? I'm going to check out the Habitat Restore and this Mr. Used place.

The Restores I've seen with the best selection of kitchen cabinets and counter tops have both been 2 in Toronto; the one on Bermondsey and the one on Queen Elizabeth. Never been to the one on Caledonia in TO.

I would also say Mr. Used.
I just got my car oil sprayed at Krown *Vic and Barton* and the used warehouse next store which was always fun to kill an hour was closed. Or else they would've had one.
Sorry but this might be the biggest hijack of a thread.
But does anyone know where to get a chef's jacket?

There's a work uniform store at Concession St near the Movie Palace. That might help.

Is Hamilton Store Fixtures at King and Caroline still open? I thought they had closed, but I was by there today and they appeared to be open. They have lots of restaurant supply equipment, they might have chef's uniforms as well.

I'm pretty sure Hamilton Store Fixtures is still open. If not, Chris's on James definitely is, on saturdays even.
Online is lame and does nothing for local business. If the few bucks you'll save is more important to you than your own city's livelihood, chances are it is to most people as well so forget about downtown retail ever coming back.

Chris's and Hamilton Fixtures are both geared to commercial sales so they should have what you need. Chris's deals with the public much better from what I hear plus their saturday hours are convenient. I've always found top quality and good service there.

Chris' is great - we stopped in last Saturday to get something small and they had a good selection - plus great service.
And I picked up some cookie cutters for $2, and they also included a giant thing of sprinkles that was worth $3 or $4.

I heard that mr used is sold. but are they still open?
Hamilton needs a place like hobo hardware, I still can't believe they closed... I wonder what happened to all of their stuff. I need bathtub feet and I bet they had buckets of them there....
