Calgary IMO. It has one of the best skylines in North America as well.

damn.. nice pics! they're all so great but if i had to choose.. it would have to be vancouver. height isn't eveything for me. if i think which skyline could i sit and watch for hours on end, vancouver does it.

toronto, calgary, mtl follow...

I agree the sheer numbers is cool to look at. However, my vote goes to Calgary.

Toronto definitely has the largest overall skyline, but is arguably rather disorganized. Montreal has perhaps the best architecture but is felt more at the street level and not that much of a "skyline" city. Vancouver has density but is levelled by the height restriction - but Calgary is the 1M metro city that defies common sense to beat cities 3+ times its size, and will get my vote for today.

I had to go with Calgary as well because its just so compact and nice to look at, WOW... 1 million people? It is in a league of its own, i could compare with cities like Denver and Minneapolis... Imagine what it will look like when this city has 3 million people...

2. Vancouver
3. Toronto
4. Montreal

No, just kidding...All 4 cities are wicked, but Vancity just has a certain 'je ne sais quoi' (perhaps I'm just biased)! Imagine Vancouver with a little more height...a dream indeed!!

I voted Vancouver. I like the mass and setting.

#2 Montréal. It just looks so good between the river and mountain.
#3 Toronto. Often looks much smaller than it actually is but I do love the CN, always have.
#4 Calgary. Extremely impressive for the population and a nice collection.

All of them are impressive.

I voted for Toronto since it has a fair amount of
very tall towers.
However, Vancouver would be the champ for me if
I were to include the natural setting. Having those
stunning mountains rise behind downtown is
unbeatable. Plus, I love those never-ending condo
towers.
Calgary could easily top my list since no place will
ever match it considering its population. Calgary
is in a league of its own.

Calgary - towers are emphasized by the lowrise surrounding neighbourhoods.
Toronto - too de-centralized
Montreal - it's tallest is it's ugliest
Vancouver - not a fan - lacking diversity - too much grey or green glass residential.

I voted for Calgary, but Montreal is a close second. Toronto is nice too, but I like Calgary and Montreal overall much better.

Vancouver is impressive, but just not as to my liking as the other three cities.

Calgary just is so pretty to look at day or night. Its dense and has depth. Just a really good skyline, one of the best in North America, probably in my top 5. The mountians help too. Oh and its very modern in overall architecture, which I like alot too.

I like the Montreal for different reasons, mainly because its looks like an older more distinguished skyline (city), heck it is. LOL. I like night shots of it especially.

1. Montreal -- Points for architecture and balanced planning. The view from the mountain is unbeatable.
2. Vancouver -- Density, mass, it just doesn't stop. Agreed, the only thing that holds it back is the similarity of so many of its condos.
3. Calgary -- For 1mil, it never ceases to impress. Heck, for 3 or 4 mil it would still impress.
4. Toronto -- lacking both architecturally and in balance. This will change in 3 years once the insane construction boom shows its results.

I'd probably go Montreal, Vancouver, Toronto, Calgary for looks. There's really no question that Toronto's the biggest though. Calgary has a big skyline but I think it has the worst buildings of the four.

Calgary is VERY impressive in number of buildings, height, etc... but I just feel like most of the skyscrapers are examples of really bad 80's architecture.

I vote for Montreal.

For skyline, I don't think any other city in the country can really compete with Toronto, aesthetically and size-wise. Very dramatic. The rest would probably be:

Calgary - very impressive for it's size and fairly nice looking overall (even if the individual buildings aren't that spectacular)

Montreal - Montreal is a beautiful city...but I find it's skyline lacking. Just doesn't do much for me.

Vancouver - Seems to have a lot of buildings, and getting some nice new ones, but the lack of height and the way it almost seems to have a definitive cut off point (I know it there are height restrictions but overall the skyline seems like a glass wall) puts it just behind Calgary and Montreal.

Vancouver #1, love the contrast with the topography and the way it spreads out, and looks spread out from most angles, and then I think Montreal, and Calgary tie for 2nd, Toronto, at 4th, I think the CN just dwarfs everything else, and sort of detracts, another thing that would help is if the skyline stretched along the waterfront more, it would make it look better, I know it stretches far behind, but that's not what you see from, and with the water.

I ran out of my monthly bandwidth allowance a few days ago this has never happened before ever so I think Rogers is cracking down or something

I hate having to ask this but can you edit out the pics that start with a "members.rogers.com/..."

The pics will be back starting November and they'll be up at the Rate Vancouver thread, so you can take them from there and put them on yur image host.

Hey Toronto you have a waterfront, if you haven't noticed. Oh too late now anyway. Toronto doesn't do it for me. From the water view, it is too small (height not being everything), From the east/west view, it is concentrated along the Yonge Street corridor from Lake to 401. That's too car orriented for me and peters out towards North York. The lack of geography pales to the others.

1. Montreal (perfect)
2. Vancouver (needs more variation and offices)
3. Calgary (very impressive, will be Canada's next financial centre, sorry TO)
4. Toronto (Big Bank buildings too clustered in a few blocks, condos too clustered in a small area along the water, no geo, no bridges, Skydome and CNT the most going for it)

Toronto is the Champion!!!. not that I dont like Calgary or Vancouver. But damn. Toronto is not only top skyline in Canada its definetly Top 5 in the world. The thing about toronto is our skyline extends North all the way past the 401. It never stops and you cant get a picture of it because its so massive. There is no stoping of bank towers, condo towers up and down and Yonge Street. and its not stopping. More condo towers going up along the corridor all the time.

1 King - 51 stories
ROCP - 52 stories
Minto Midtown 51 stories.

Avondale
Actually there are so many Towers going up the Yonge street corridor its no point trying to list them all

We are at the point now in Toronto where you could almost pick any section of the yonge street corridor from Finch to the lake and it would be the tallest towers in any other Canadian city outside of Calgary and Montreal and even in those cities they would still be close to the tallest.

Here is a picture I took for the lake in August.

I would rank them...

1. Toronto - I prefer the look of Vancouver's buildings, but there is no denying the pure size of Toronto's skyline...

2. Vancouver - Scenery, density...

3. Montreal - Tough call on this one, I really like the feeling in Montreal of having each large building in the core spread out...you can kind of reference where you are in the city by each building. Kind of a strange, surreal environment...

4. Calgary - Amazing for the size of the city, but I'm just not that keen on the buildings themselves...Makes for some awesome nightshots, though....

Man, it is tough choice because all four are quite different and unique in their own respect:

Toronto: wins in the height category. There is nothing quite like standing on Bay and King Streets and looking straight up. 5 or 6 60+ storey towers literally withing throwing distance. Unfortunately, the best view of it is also the most difficult to get to (from the water on the Island) I live along bloor and spadina, and the view doesn't inspire me so much. But Scotia plaza is an amazing skyscraper!

Vancouver: the best to look at from afar with all the scenery. Height will help it, and greater diversity of architecture, but overall a stunning skyline.

Montreal: nice to look at especially from Mont Royal. I enjoy being in Montreal's downtown more than any other. The buildings are spaced out quite a bit which is nice in a way, the opposite of Toronto. I like the atmosphere of downtown montreal.

Calgary: what can I say, the hometown bias plays in here, but I absolutely love Calgary's skyline. There is no qustion in my mind that Calgary has the best skyline in the world for a city around 1 million people (maybe any under 2 million) The buildings are nicely organized so the downtown as a whole appears nice from all angles. It really has a presence in the city as you can see it clearly from almost anywhere. There is also a nice condo boom right now which is adding to the liveliness of the core. it needs some more bold architecture to improve it even more...

Edmonton also deserves honorable mention...nice to look at from the other side of the river valley.

Canada is very lucky with all its major downtowns very healthy, and there is A TON of development ongoing in all of these cities.

Just imagine 10-15 years from now

cheers.
