Its one of the Largest Commuter Bus/ Light Rail / Rail agencies in North America. About 360,000-450,000 ppl use NJT Rail each day. So i thought its time i start a topic about it on here. We have 536 miles & 162 stops of Rail for commuter services on 11 lines , that are mostly in the North Except the Atlantic line in the south. Only 2 lines is completely electrified that is the Northeast Corridor & Gladstone Branch. There are 5 Electrified lines in total, they are the North Jersey Coastal form NY-Penn or Hoboken Terminal to Long Branch, future to Asbury park. The Morris & Essex line is Electrified east of Dover , and future west to the Lackawanna line. The Montclair - Boonton line is electrified form Montclair Univ - Hoboken Terminal. The rest of NJT lines are diesel , although NJT plans to electrify 2 more lines over the next 10 years. NJT has 107 miles of Light Rail and 60 stops spread out on 3 Light Rail networks, Hudson-Bergen Light Rail Network servicing 60% of NJ Gold Coast , in 6 years it will all of the NJ Gold Coast with 3 more extensions on the way. The Newark Network has 2 lines , and 4 Extensions in the near future , one day it will connect to EWR and Elizabeth , and Paterson via the Essex Inland Empire. The Riverline was the first Diesel Light Rail system in US and Second in North America. There are plans to extend it south about 15 miles form its current terminus. It runs form the Trenton Transit Center to Camden Waterfront, it is the lightest used Light Rail in NJ with 5,000-8,000 ppl daily. Currently NJT is building a New Tunnel to NYC , and new Terminal it will increase capacity and improve safety. Then Current tunnel is 100+ years old and has problems that cause breakdowns. The New Tunnel will also although one-seat rides into NYC form the Diesel lines near me via Dual-Mode Locos NJT is buying.

I happened to take pictures at NJT major hub last week with a Friend so i share a few pictures and videos form the 2 of us.

Hoboken Terminal , turned 100 years old , a few years ago.
It is undergoing massive renovations in the old Ferry terminal which reopen early next year. There is a PATH subway terminal in the basement and 9 of the 11 NJT lines terminate here. It also serves the Hudson-Bergen Light Rail network via a Terminal on the south side of the Complex. There is a bus terminal as well , 140-60 ppl daily use this Terminal.

Good idea and good thread. NJT and LIRR are easily the best commuter railroads in the nation!

P.S. This will give me a place to complain that NJT short-shafts South Jersey by not providing adequate commuter operations at all to Camden/Philadelphia. :)

I grew up in Bergen County and used to ride the Main and sometimes Pascack lines regularly. It's a great system. North Jersey is blessed with excellent transit. Hoboken Terminal is one of the nation's great transit hubs, linking subway, commuter rail, light rail, ferry, and bus lines. Newark Penn is a very busy hub as well.

Correct me if I am wrong, but is the NJ Transit Commuter Rail system not a tad slow in parts? It seems like in some areas, like the North Jersey Coast, the stations are really close together, and the train takes forever to get into Manhattan.

North Jersey Transit, hammer? :) Hey, do we not have scores and scores of buses from South Jersey into Center City?

Anyways I do find NJT an interesting system - they double decker cars are a neat ride into Penn. If they'd give South Jersey residents more rail options to Philadelphia and double track the AC Line I'd have nothing to complain about. Isn't something happening with a branch to Hillsborough that would run from the end of SEPTA's R3?

Well, it's not the TGV, but it gets you where you're going, and very reliably. In the hundreds of rides I've taken the only delays I experienced were once during a blizzard and once when the train hit a guy. The line down the shore does have a lot of stops and is a little pokey. I've only used it on the weekends though, and not for commuting.

Another thing I'd like to point out is that the commuter rail is a very old system, and the towns grew up around the stations. Most of the stations are in historic downtowns of varying sizes, rather than park-and-ride type environments. The historic downtowns, train stations, and heavy tree cover (NJ suburbs were built in the forest, not on cornfields) are what made suburban NJ a great place to grow up.

Most of the network is old goes back to the 1920s , in NJ we kept some of ROW so newer passenger lines don't require a buyout form a Freight company. The MOM project will consist of 2 Rail lines in Middlesex-Ocean-Monmouth Counties. One would feed into the NEC and that line would require a Bridge or the NEC lines , since Express Tracks can't be halted. And the other line would feed into the North Jersey Coastal line. Plans also call form BRT line down US 9. There are plans to build a LRT line in New Brunswick.

Here are some more Clips and pics form me & other ppl in my NJT network

My dream would be a SEPTA/NJ Transit partnership that would see the end of the R3 (as a means to get to Trenton to take NJ Transit to NY) and the beginning of one seat service from 30th Street to NY Penn with stops at Temple, Cornwall's Heights Park & Ride, Trenton, Princeton, and maybe a couple other stops.

NJ Transit/SEPTA should do something to stay proactive - I would assume that the bus companies are having some kind of impact on ridership (Bolt, Chinatown, etc.).

Cheap and fast transit between NY and Philly should be improved. Overall however, I think most SEPTA users are quite envious of NJ Transit - if nothing else they have machines at EVERY station! Woah what a marvelous concept!

EDIT: Kick me if I'm being greedy, but is a PATCO connection to 30th St too much to ask for?

I think what will happen is NJT will focus on the North & Central areas of NJ, rather then the south, which is mostly rural. With the Exception of the Riverline Ext to West Trenton Septa Station and Form the Camden Waterfront to Glassboro , i doubt you'll really see anything over the next 10-15 years.

Which is precisely the problem. North Jersyites think that everything south of the NEC is unbroken pine wastes, but in actuality, about a third of Philadelphia's suburban population lives within the counties immediately adjoining the Delaware between Trenton and Gloucester City, particularly in the densly-built-up area surrounding the city of Camden. There were once commuter rails criss-crossing all of New Jersey, but NJT funds railroads in North Jersey to the detriment of what's available in South Jersey, and PATCO's no LIRR.

volguus zildrohar
Jan 29, 2010, 1:39 AM
I've always thought PATCO acted more like PATH than LIRR. It's no big secret that South Jersey takes a backseat to the counties and towns in the NYC area which is why PATCO is doing more of the proposing for service expansion in that part of the state than NJT is. Bus service is extensive throughout South Jersey, though. I'm unware of how well covered by railroads much of that part of the state is but if the infrastructure never existed than it's easy to see why it doesn't exist now. That still doesn't excuse NJT from almost completely forsaking rail transit of any kind there.

I love riding NJT to Penn Station. It's a major step up from SEPTA regional rail. The only complaint is that the trains don't go very fast.

A big chunk of the NEC except for the Catenary wires and Interlocks is upgraded in NJ , but there is alot of work to be done. Complete Catenary , Interlock replacement and Straighting out on some curves.

Heres some interesting NJT NEC videos

North Elizabeth Station : limited weekend service : lines , North Jersey Coastal & NEC.

<object width="640" height="505"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/D0TWcJ67mF8&hl=en_US&fs=1&rel=0&color1=0x2b405b&color2=0x6b8ab6&hd=1"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/D0TWcJ67mF8&hl=en_US&fs=1&rel=0&color1=0x2b405b&color2=0x6b8ab6&hd=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="640" height="505"></embed></object>

New Brunswick Station and a bunch of Rail fannites, this is one the curves that will be fixed to allow greater speeds for Amtrak & NJT Express Trains

Secacuse JCT station , will one day be a very busy station, currently all but one NJT line doesn't feed into this station , ACL. Amtrak trains do not stop here.

Say--is there any plan or proposal to link the Hudson-Bergen and Newark light rail lines together? That would create a nearly completely unified metro system in the urbanized areas on the west side of the Hudson.

Also: do you know where to find a good map of the PRSL? I want to align the old maps with the current situation so that I can get a better idea of what commuter rail should look like in Jersey's Philly 'burbs. :)

Pennsylvania-Reading Seashore Lines. The minor railroad, jointly held by the PRR and RDG (hence Pennsylvania-Reading) that traditionally ran commuter operations and beach trains in South Jersey. The PATCO Glassboro extension runs along an old PRSL ROW. I want it because it would be fairly easy to figure out where the most logical South Jersey commuter routings would go if I had a good map of what the former routings actually were.

I want it because it would be fairly easy to figure out where the most logical South Jersey commuter routings would go if I had a good map of what the former routings actually were.

See if this meets your needs (Google Earth placemark file):

https://www.yousendit.com/download/UFh2TGs2Zy9UWUN4dnc9PQ

A lot of the lines were fairly redundant, since they were built by competing railroads. Between the PATCO Glassboro, the ACL, and the RiverLine, that covers much of suburban South Jersey. A line out to Mount Holly would form a complete network. This would probably be a branch of the ACL, splitting off at Merchantville, with an infill station near the Betsy Ross Bridge in Pennsauken to make transfers to the RiverLine.

The only abandoned line that might be useful, give today's development patterns, is the former Philadelphia, Marlton, and Medford Railroad (http://www.sjrail.com/wiki/index.php?title=Image:PM%26M-DB%26L_map.JPG). Much of its former ROW is now Marlton Pike. Unfortunately, it was vacated in 1931 - most of the ROW is completely gone. Resurrecting it would be pretty costly.

Here's a good map too...this one dates from 1941.

I agree with your general assessment for the large part, but frankly I think you're also assigning the Glassboro line too much coverage. It looks like a modern New Jersey network would be split between light rail (for near destinations) and commuter rail (for further destinations). Light rail would bundle into a core system that would terminate in downtown Camden (mostly at Walter Rand, but with a 10 min. headway for waterfront trains), while commuter rail would bundle into the Delair crossing. The commuter lines would mainly service more distant destinations.

My light rail network would consist of (3) light rail lines--
1. River Line (Camden-Trenton)
2. Glassboro Line (Camden-Glassboro)
3. Riverside Line (Camden-Carneys Point)

A riverside line is needed because the Glassboro line's coverage area is too far inland.

The commuter rail network, by contrast, primarily services larger towns and the Shore itself, accessing it at three major points:
1. Toms River
2. Atlantic City
3. Wildwood-Cape May

Additionally, an old CNJ cutoff between Vineland and Winslow Jct. can be made use of to allow faster commuter train access to South Jersey's largest municipality (by area). The line through Mt. Holly to Toms River also has the advantage of serving Ft. Dix. So our commuter network would service, from 30th Street Station,
(a) Mt. Holly, Ft. Dix, Toms River
(b) Egg Harbor City, Atlantic City
(c) Vineland (Bridgeton?) via Winslow Jct. (CNJ route)
(d) Cape May/Wildwood (fmr. Wildwood Jct.) via Tuckahoe and Winslow Jct. (The former Millville branch has been lost south of Belleplain.)

This network would offer a more than adequate network for reaching the South Jersey suburbs and Shore from Philadelphia.

What's the goal, though? Most of the lines you propose extend far out into relatively undeveloped areas for the sake of reaching the Shore.

A 68-mile commuter line like the ACL only works because there's a big city at either end. I'm not sure a line to Wildwood/Cape May would generate enough ridership to be worth the cost. The same goes for Toms River. Are people really gonna take the train to go to the Shore? Even if they do, is that enough traffic to justify running a daily schedule of trains? Assuming people are going to the Shore for vacationing, they're probably gonna want to drive, since any rail lines would only touch one point along the coast (the branches running parallel to the coast have long since become large arterial roads). The majority of summer houses and such wouldn't be near the railheads.

The North Jersey Coast Line runs parallel to the coast, so it can serve numerous Shore destinations.

Also: I'm not very familiar with South Jersey, but just going off of land coverage, it seems like the areas east of the Glassboro Line up to the river are fairly undeveloped... if I-295 couldn't make these areas develop, I'm not sure a light-rail line will do that either.

I do agree that the Mount Holly line could/should be extended to Ft. Dix. Military installations seem to generate lots of traffic if they are served by rail (Great Lakes north of Chicago generates lots of ridership, for example).

:previous: What would make a ton of sense would to somehow extend the North Jersey Coast line to at least intersect the AC Line... that way you could take the AC line, then transfer to get to many shore points.

Theres alot of ppl form the Philly Suburbs that travel down to Cape May , Wildwoods , Ocean City. So those lines would carry a decent amount of people between April - October.... Once the MOM network is restored we might get somewhere with connecting the Matawan line to Atlantic line and since they meet where the Cape May Branch splits , a Train form North Jersey could travel down to Cape May. After Toms River the route is grade separated and straight so trains could very fast , electric and Diesel. Alot of people in South Jersey are pushing for the train service , Cape May county sees it as a Economic stimulus , that county is dying and losing people. A Train to Philly or NY could cause a population growth rebound like you see along parts of the AC line and Riverline towns or Generate more tourism $$$. The state owns the ROW already , all the next is New ADA stations , signals and tracks in some spots. South Jersey is mostly undeveloped due to the Pine Barrens , but there are small towns like Egg Harbor City , Cape May , Millville , Vineland , Bridgeton , Pennsville ,that could use more service or a connection. South Jersey is neglected by the DOT / NJT in Transportation dept so they rarely oppose anything and things are cheaper down there. My Bus operator friend down there said Rail Service would benefit alot of struggling towns....and boost Ridership on struggling bus lines.

There is a substantial travel market between the Philadelphia metropolitan area and Wildwood/Cape May. Rt 55 is often quite crowded, if not outright jammed, during peak summer times. This is the market that route would service.

Salem County's hinterland is swampy or agricultural, but Port facilities extend along the coast. A line through these Port towns would (a) provide passenger transportation from the Port to elsewhere in the metropolitan area, and (b) provide a locus for redevelopment for several well-boned but poor Salem County towns.

Vineland is the eastmost major town in New Jersey. It is imperative that a rail connection be built there...a possibility might be to extend the Glassboro line down to Vineland, however. Still, I suggest the town serve as a hub for bus lines serving South Jersey's most outlying destinations.

After fiddling about a bit, I realized that Fort Dix to Toms River is a no-go, you'd have to blaze a new ROW either north of south of McGuire. There is a disruption in track between Ft. Dix and Mt. Holly, but of all the projects I suggested, I think that connecting the Fort with the metropolitan transit network should have one of the highest priorities.

Extending the Bay Head line to Toms River (a distance of about a stop) would be a far more efficient use of resources...something discovered via trial and error.

No, I totally understand the huge wave of people that descend on the Cape May area, and other areas of the shore. Chicago has a similar mass exodus into southern Wisconsin and Michigan every summer weekend. I just don't think vacationers are a ready market for train travel. People making a daily commute can justify the subsidy of setting up a government-funded rail service. But people making trips each weekend to their summer houses? You'd have huge demand on Fridays from noon to, say, 10pm, and then again on Sundays from noon to 10pm. The rest of the week, the train would be pretty sleepy. Hell, the rest of the year, the train would be pretty sleepy. If travel times were decent, you might get some daytrippers on Friday/Saturday/Sunday as well, groups of people headed to the beach.

The "last mile" is a huge problem as well, because in a lot of cases, it's far more than a mile and there isn't local transit to pick up. If I own (or rent) a house somewhere, it's much more likely than not that the house is nowhere near a train station.

The lines should be set up as commuter lines first and foremost. Trains out to the Shore would have to be limited-service if they existed at all, running only Thurs-Sun during warmer months. Maintaining track that can support trains at 55mph or above is quite expensive, and it really only works financially if the commuter demand is high enough to justify the expense, and/or if the freight railroad that owns the lines is willing to chip in. If the trains don't go 55mph, then they won't be remotely competitive with driving.

That part of NJ is the fastest growing part and most commute to Camden / Philly , so there is a demand for non-summer commuters. For the beach lines there are connecting buses that are used by alot of ppl....and for the inland communities there are transit services to connect to. The Branches like the Ocean city and Wildwood would run only during the warmer months , but the Cape May line would run all year round since it would service Philly bound commuters. The Tracks in South Jersey are fast , straight and there are not alot of stations planned for the regional railways.... 4-10 max for the whole south Jersey Regional Railway system. Trains can easily reach there maxes of 90-110mph on the trunk lines. The Tram / Train network would be capped at 60mph. Southern Jersey communities are starting to realize the benefits of TOD and the need for commuter towns along routes to Philly / Camden so i think you see the demand rise.

Hey, cool I just discovered these guys:

Cape May Seashore Lines (http://www.capemayseashorelines.org/)

Maybe they could be contracted to run an express service from 30th Street Camden to Cape May - especially if the state pays for them to replace their rickety old RDCs with some modern Stadler DMUs.

It would be form 30th Street and use Push - Pulls , NJT owns the line already so only a few things are needed to reactivate service. Politics as usually hold everything back....

Where are you getting your information? I think you should cite your sources.

For instance, the Portal Bridge project has not been funded (recent article (http://blogs.wsj.com/metropolis/2011/05/12/christie-burns-bridge-with-n-j-senators/)) and, although long overdue, is unlikely to begin construction in the next two years as you state, particularly with Christie still in office. Where did you read it would be starting construction in the next two years?

And where are you getting your projections for ridership in 2030? Is that something official? Can you link to a source?

NJT staff and Newspaper articles , i have no idea whats going on with the Portal Bridge , last year they said it was funded this year it still needs funding. Theyve begun Prep work for some reason. The Bergen - Passaic line has its own page , i got my info from the County , they were displeased with NJT so it was sent back to the drawing boards. The MOM and West Trenton lines have there studies completed from what i know , there just figuring out funding and which routes to build. NIMBYs have also slowed the MOM project , but now that we have the ALP 45 DP's projects should start moving again. Me and a Friend took the Ridership numbers from the state , and county and some of our own numbers based on regional growth and commuter habits , along with TOD. There for the most part accurate , but the recent numbers came out , and our numbers are below what came out. But we NJT doesn't really update there numbers so were confused.... Now that i read the Portal Project is in limbo , most of the smaller projects listed are not in limbo and are included in the yearly budget. But 2035 is a long way away , and knowing NJT and PATH those projects will get build by then. For this decade you only see a smaller and mid sized projects , but i think in the 2020s you see the larger projects like the MOM , New Brunswick LRT , West Trenton system and Philpsburg connections. I'll start posting pictures of projects soon.... I got some of the Projects listed from the Video below , some from NJT staff , some from Organizations and counties. I'll try to get the sources all straightened out by next friday.

I've called him out on that, but he won't do it. He spews some vague nonsense about discussions with people who work there. Yet somehow they can share this information with him, but there is NOTHING about the vast majority of these projects online. That's why he can't provide links. For example, he said (I think on another forum) that PATH to Newark Airport would be finished by 2020 I think. They did a study in 2004 about extending PATH to Newark Airport, but obviously nothing came of it, and there have been no announcements since.

I think his lists are nothing but wish lists. There was a recent announcement about extending HBRL light rail to the west side of Route 440 (yet they STILL haven't reversed the 2010 service cuts). But that's one of the very projects confirmed to go ahead.[/QUOTE]

Well the 2035 thing is a wish list in some aspects , but its projects that getting close to becoming reality. Hench why i didn't put all the projects in the Ridership project list. I'll start getting links alot of large scale projects get tied up in NIMBY and fall off the radar.... But none of my list is none sense.... How am i supposed to validate with a link something that an Employee told me , thats next to impossible or 8 months out. I stand by 2035 , i read a while ago and i'll try to find the link that the PA might try to push for the Airport extension by 2015. There are also links that have died..... Most of the non large scale projects are underway at least what you saw in the video. Like i said since NJT has gotten the ALP 45DP's alot of projects should move faster instead of stuck in limbo.... Knowing the HBLR all the expansions are very likely look at the history of expansions to the current system. As for the cuts last year , while they haven't restored some service , they added 2 trains to my line and few others last year.... I will admit after alot of employees pointed out that the 2020 thing was unrealistic i changed it to 2035 which they said more realistic.... The problem is also NJT , they don't post all the info or update it , so i have to go the back way. The only problem with all the large scale projects is funding.....i have a feeling later this decade that will change.

I will try to have all the links up by Friday , but some already appear to down even on stories from November. I also have to admit that on not up to date on most of these projects , so i'm going by 6 month old data. So i could be wrong.....but ive noticed those projects are still on the Capital projects list , so there not killed off just stalled....due to Funding and NIMBYS..... Ive also shifting from NJT to Metro North over the past few months....more interesting things are happening over there then here.

How am i supposed to validate with a link something that an Employee told me , thats next to impossible or 8 months out.

Because if an employee was at liberty to tell it to you, and it was legit, there would be something about it online. If it was confidential, they wouldn't have told it to you in the first place. This is 2011. There is no reason any of this wouldn't be online. If an employee just told it to you without any official announcements, than it is just speculation and/or wishes.

I go back to my PATH to Newark Airport example. A google search reveals multiple articles from 2004. There's been absolutely no announcement since then, yet you say that it WILL be finished by 2020. They can't do these things in secret. They need to do studies, make public statements, have public political bickering, and in your country they sometimes even put these things to a public vote. There is no confirmation of PATH to the aiport by 2020, and the same goes for dozens of other items on your wishlists. It doesn't matter what "an employee told you".

I fully agree. Publishing hearsay and rumors, even in a forum such as this, just serves to spread misinformation.

Just stick to the projects that have online documentation, such as recent news articles or recently updated official websites, and cite the source. NJ Transit has a bunch of legitimate projects that are well documented online, so it shouldn't be a problem.

As far as "two extra trains" on the HBLR goes, the line was recently extended 1 mile (2 miles round-trip). With a longer line, you need more trains and/or less dwell time at the end of the line just to maintain the same service frequency. Now they're trying to pull the wool over everyone's eyes by extending one of the other lines a little under a mile west, hoping everyone forgets the fact that there were terrible service cuts in 2010 that haven't been reversed. The should worry about getting back to decent service levels BEFORE worrying about a small expansion to one of the lines IMO.

Would Railroad.net or Another Transit site count , because thats were i'm getting most of this info. NJT gives the suburbs more service before the Urban areas if you haven't figured that out....always has and always will. I'll just leave the list as be , and we can check off the projects as there announced and built , hopefully SSp will be here in 2040.

So we're to believe that you have "inside sources" that can tell you about these projects years before there is an official announcement? And they're able to reveal this confidential information to you (and you to us) without fear of being fired, or other repercussions?

Sure.

An official source should be required here, just as it is required to credit the source of pictures you post not taken by yourself.

I said i would post the links a few times....sheesh. I guess your not a transit fanner or work for a transit company. And yes some of the employees can be fired for telling us this and other info....or suspended. 2035/2040 are the final dates , i was getting ahead of myself with 2020..... There are alot of things looking up in this state , the fact that HBLR has expanded numerous times , a few smaller transit upgrade / expansion projects like the Lackawanna line and Pennsuaken connection are underway. The Hoboken Terminal project is moving ahead full steam and should be completed later this year..... Christie hasn't opposed anything else after the ARC mess , the problem with funding can be fixed if they raised the Gas Tax and let PPP's invest in Transit / Roads i have a feeling that will happen later this decade.... People are getting fed up with the roads and delays on transit....

At OP's request I'm going to close all these threads. If anyone would like to discuss NY/NJ regional rail they can open a new thread (just one will suffice - we don't need a separate one for each agency). - moderation
