Deerfoot upkeep may return to city
By Jason Markusoff, Calgary HeraldFebruary 8, 2010

Ten years after the province took responsibility for Deerfoot Trail from the city, it is looking to return the urban freeway to Calgary's control.

Transportation Minister Luke Ouellette doesn't foresee the move until at least mid-decade, but his interest in a handover is catching Calgary aldermen by surprise.

Assuming control of Deerfoot Trail would leave the city dependent on provincial grants, or its own coffers, for safety upgrades and repaving the 50-kilometre ribbon.

Bad idea IMO. A roadway of this magnatude should remain with the province.

The City can barely maintain its own roads! What makes the province think that the City is up to the task of maintaining one more road, and not just any road!

Just in time to shovel the Glenmore/Deerfoot rebuild onto the City's shoulders. Nice move Ed. Especially after the Province has made so much noise over the years about the Canamex highway system and its importance to the province.

The article is pretty funny. Maybe the alderman are "surprised" to make the optics worse on the governments end because this idea is nothing new. It was new when the East Freeway report was finished, and that was how long ago?

How dare they force the city into something as terrible as this, a largely municiply-built highway completely in the middle of urban development, while the Alberta Goverment spends billions creating highways to offload traffic away from the road. The thought of it just drives me mad! :haha:

Wouldn't south deerfoot (south of 22x) still count as a bypass? Part of the reason the road was moved to the province was that the city didn't want to build that section.

That portion from 22X to the junction near Okotoks will be maintained by the P3 contractor for SE Stoney Trail.

Yep. So likely all the city would be given back is the area starting from just south of the Stoney Trail NE interchange to the north side of the 22X interchange.
