I couldn't find a thread on this anywhere. I was suprised to discover that they are planning on turning the upper portion of the COP lands into a residential development (as in selling it off, not for athlete accomodation).
Any idea what the "Employment Area" is in the purple areas on page 13 of the following PDF:

Bye Bye trees!
Why must we bulldoze the few native forests Calgary has for more fucking suburbs! Ugh! It makes me sick! Virtually all the native aspen woods to the west of the city are gone now. I'm all for COP becoming more of a viable commercial centre, but to cover those gorgeous wooded slopes with more fucking cookie cutter boxes makes me want to puke! Fucking developers!:yuck: (End rant)

Looks like most of the treed areas in the application are protected. It's stoney trail that will really influence the area more.

I take it they want to generate some revenue to go toward the winter Sport Institute. I don't see this as a problem. I didn't read the whole document, but it does mention athlete's housing.

The initial phase of the residential development is a grassy area currently, but it looks like they may also be planning on developing into the treed area on the east side of 85th St. (At least, that's how it looks from the diagram on pg. 13.) Those people who own homes in The Prominatory will be PO'd for sure, as they have greenspace backing view lots currently.
It also looks like much of the lower area is going to be redeveloped into some sort of mixed retail-commercial-dorm area. I can't imagine this would be a prime retail location as it is a total dead zone outside of winter weekends.
I imagine they are going to be building some sort of massive parking garage as parking is already an issue at COP on weekends. (Or is that part of what they are already building?)
Looks like the moutain bike trails will be lost also. Definitely no more concerts at COP either.
Would hate to own one of the homes on the north west corner of Cougar Ridge once both this and Stoney Trail are done.

Can someone post some of the images for those of us who don't have time to go through the document?

The folks on the north end of Cougar Ridge will also be losing great views too. I'm surprised that the buffer zone between CougarStone Manor, Mews, and Terrace and Paskapoo Place and Manor isn't wider. I wonder how this will affect the property values on those CougarStone properties.

It seems that the R-1s product will have secondary suite options which are intended to be available for athlete accomodation, according to Page 13 of the document.

I see Lesley Conway, President of Hopewell Residential Communities, sits on the Board of Directors for Winsport Canada. It will be interesting to see who gets to develop that land.

I have a feeling they threw that in there just to reduce resistance from residents in the existing Cougar Ridge... it's hard to rail against providing housing for starving athletes.
There is also, however, reference to allowing athlete accomodations in the Site 1 and Site 2 developments on the North.
