Canadian provinces in general all cover pretty large areas, allowing for vastly different scenery in a single province. Please keep it short n' sweet and limit yourself to one photo from each:

- Landscape (one for each landscape)
- Urban
- Suburban
- Smalltown
- Industry
- Building Interior

While Southern Saskatchewan is largely made up of flat prairie and river valleys, the Northern part of the province is composed of boreal forest and thousands upon thousands of lakes.

I'm just posting links because the site specifically asks for written permission to reproduce, even electronically. Maybe a mod could let me know if it's okay to post pics from a source like this.

Robin Karpan showcases some of the best and rarely seen Saskatchewan landscapes. I know it sucks that it's just links but some of this might surprise you if all you can think of when you hear Saskatchewan is flat wheat and canola fields:

Athabasca Sand Dunes (http://www.parklandpublishing.com/skphotos/athabasca_sand_dunes/index.html) (probably the most unique geological formation in the province; I've never heard/seen of anything like this in North America). I've heard the sand is up to 300m deep in some places.

And here's the north shore of the lake. (http://www.parklandpublishing.com/skphotos/athabasca_north_shore/index.html)

Cypress Hills (http://www.parklandpublishing.com/skphotos/cypress_hills/index.html) in the Southwest

Saskatchewan has Waterfalls? (http://www.parklandpublishing.com/skphotos/waterfalls/index.html)

Lake Diefenbaker (http://www.parklandpublishing.com/skphotos/diefenbaker/index.html); the natural sandcastles are particularly cool

I'm not sure if I could take the summer heat long enough to live in Kamloops, but I find the terrain much more interesting than the endless tree-covered mountains found in much of the province (like the Nelson photo).

I love the Arrow Lakes, and the area my dad lives in East of Vernon, but I don't find the landscape the least bit interesting. For some reason whenever I mention this people from the area scoff and figure I just have some sort of Albertan inferiority complex. They can't fathom anybody preferring the terrain one can find in the foothills (personally, my favourite is the drive south of Longview, AB where the prairies seem to end abruptly and the Rockies come out of nowhere). The Whaleback Region is probably my favourite in Alberta, and IMO one of the most picturesque places I've been.

Since it would be too complicated to cover all the province of Quebec, I'll limit my contribution to this thread to the Eastern Townships in southeastern Quebec. That's my native region. I already had a bunch of pics on my computer, so I just post them here, I hope there are not too many of them and they show different types of landscape.

So funny you say that. When I looked at the picture of Kamloops my first thought was ugh so barren, look how much better it looks where the trees start!

Different strokes for different folks I guess!

I guess so. My thoughts are "finally, something other than trees".

Not that I dislike trees, the old growth forests on the Island are spectacular.

Another area I find quite stunning is around Hope. It's got the endless tree thing going on, but is also incredibly rugged when compared with most of the province.

Why, I don't know... There are open pit mines in Asbestos and Thetford Mines. I think (but I'm not sure) that the largest open pit mine in the world is in Thetford Mines (eastern Quebec, region of Chaudière-Appalaches)

Beautiful pixs, fantastic landscapes! I thought each region is equally breathtaking in it's own way. The only photos that I did'nt like were the Oil Sands photo, and the suburban photos of Edmonton and Calgary. I know that oil sands photo made it look worse than what it is (I hope)! Canada is a beautiful country. I'm surprised a lot more Americans don't visit CA.

I forgot another one. BC's Kettle River valley is another favourite area of mine.

Metro-One
Apr 23, 2010, 6:10 AM
Yep, my favorite places in Canada are also the dry interior valleys of BC, such as the Okanagan, Nicola and Thompson Valleys.

For Ayreonaut, if you love the Cali look dry hills of BC than you will love driving the #1 from Lytton to Kamloops shown above. All dry rolling semi-desert hills. Sadly, forest fire suppression in the last 50 years has caused the forest to creep down the hillsides, replacing grasslands. So many people hate forest fires but do not understand that it is a very natural part of the interior ecosystem and actually creates healthier dry forests and grasslands. Even during the major Kelowna fire season of 2003 only 50% of the annual amount of land was burned compared to historical average annual burns pre-fire suppression. Very sad if you ask me, and I hate how the media always tries to vilify fire as if it is hurting the wilderness :haha: In fact i wrote a huge paper in my ecology class about how the current pine beetle kill is actually majorly caused by forest fire suppression, and that this epidemic will actually help correct the imbalance currently occurring in our over crowded forests and decreasing grasslands.

Another area you would love is the Nicola valley and driving the old #5, it has some of the most beautiful scenery in Canada with the dry rolling hills, steep cliffs and Nicola Lake.

I will upload a few of my own pics in a few minutes from around BC. Sadly i am almost up to my upload limit for this month on flickr.

OK, here are a few of my pic from BC

I completely agree. I actually kind of hate how the Columbia River /Arrow/ Kinbasket hydro projects destroyed the valleys. The reservoirs made most of that area of BC pretty hard to access. Too bad this is also going to happen on the Peace River up north now.

I love going there every year. Osoyoos, and the south Okanagan in general does not feel like Canada. For 6 months of the year you really do feel like you are in California or Mexico. It is so hot and so dry, and the nights stay nice and warm as well.

I remember once staying in Osoyoos for 3 weeks in June / July and the coldest day we had was a high of 26, and after a couple weeks of 30+ weather I was amazed how cool 26 felt :haha:

Even the winter is short (only lasting about 2 months) and even then the average high temps still remain above freezing.

For those in Eastern Canada if you ever come to BC, you must come to the South Okanagan in the summer.

Good idea to bring back this thread.

I went to the Bas St.Laurent a couple of weeks ago. I was struck by the beauty of this region, which is not very well known. The tourists usually drive through the region on their way to the Gaspésie. Rimouski, Kamouraska (picture below) and the little towns scattered along the St.Lawrence river (sea?) have a lot of charm.

I couldn't care less about our cityscapes. I spent one year and half in Europe and it took me this to realize the chance we have in this country to have this diversity of landscapes and real wilderness, endless forests, million of lakes... It's unique in the world. Now I consider myself lucky to be born in this country.

I appreciate both cityscapes and landscapes. We're blessed in that the one we have no control over (landscapes) is unparalleled. Our cities? We can always keep building, but some of them are quite fabulous already. ;)

Thought I would repost this item I placed in the "Atlantic Canada Photo" thread:

A Few Pics of the Fundy Trail Parkway

http://i1188.photobucket.com/albums/z411/MonctonRad/Snapbucket/Fundy%20Trail%20Parkway/6B4266BB-orig.jpg
This is the interpretive centre on the Big Salmon River. There are some interesting hiking trails starting at this point, including one that crosses the river on a suspension walking bridge and leads to the William Randolph Hearst Lodge.

http://i1188.photobucket.com/albums/z411/MonctonRad/Snapbucket/Fundy%20Trail%20Parkway/49E23CEB-orig.jpg
Another picture of the interpretation centre. You can see a bit of the Big Salmon River in front of the centre, with the Bay of Fundy in the background.

http://i1188.photobucket.com/albums/z411/MonctonRad/Snapbucket/Fundy%20Trail%20Parkway/B772DE4D-orig.jpg
This is the lookout at Long Beach. You can see the beach in the center foreground, which is 500' below you. The headland in the distance is Cape Chignecto, Nova Scotia. The amazing thing about the lookouts along the trail is that on a sunny day, the entirety of the Bay of Fundy is laid out before you. You can literally see all the way down the bay as far as Digby Neck and back up the bay to Cape Chignecto and the entrances to Chignecto Bay and the Minas Channel. The views are glorious...

http://i1188.photobucket.com/albums/z411/MonctonRad/Snapbucket/Fundy%20Trail%20Parkway/9FDD8B9F-orig.jpg
Another view of Long Beach, with Cape Chignecto in the distance. Chignecto Bay extends to your left and the Minas Channel to your right.

One day (hopefully in the not too distant future), they will complete the Fundy Trail all the way through to Fundy National Park. When that happens, there will be a continuous coastal scenic route connecting Saint John and Moncton. Stops along the way will include:
- St. Martins (sea caves, B&B's, Restaurants)
- The Fundy Trail Parkway
- Fundy National Park
- Alma (quaint fishing village, restaurants, service centre for Fundy Park)
- Cape Enrage (adventure tourism, fossils, voted Canada's best view by Conde Nast)
- Hopewell Rocks (New Brunswick's signature natural attraction)

The completed coastal drive from Moncton to Saint John will be New Brunswick's version of the Cabot Trail. An easy day trip between NB's two largest cities with breathtaking scenery along the way.

It's not a province, but I think the Yukon has some of the best landscapes in the world. Kind of reminds of me of New Zealand stretched across a huge area, or maybe I should say New Zealand reminds me of Northern Canada compressed into one island.

I just returned from spending one month in Nunavut for work but was only in the southwestern part near Arviat - the so-called "barrenlands". It was actually very beautiful, especially from the air in the coastal areas. I was lucky enough to see the caribou migrate right through the camp we were working out of (a dream of mine for some time now), along with six grizzly bears (on three occasions), a herd of musk ox, and one grey wolf.

Here are some pics i took today (December 4th, 2011) on my day trip to Sechelt. It is a 40 minute ferry ride from Horseshoe Bay and then another 20 minute drive.

Here is Howe Sound and area from the ferry:

Here are some palm trees on the main street. Felt nice and warm in the sun today:

The best part of the Sunshine Coast are the Arbutus Trees, my favorite native trees in Canada:

And last but not least, the late evening sun looking towards Vancouver Island:

That is indeed an awesome promo video for Alberta, oiler-dude. I can see Japanese and German tourists just eating it up.

Great snaps, Metro-One. I've never actually been to Sechelt despite living in Victoria and Vancouver.

Lovely, lovely shots. I miss Kal Lake. Used to swim in it daily during my Winfield days.
