View Full Version : Airline Simulation Game

I just found this today and thought it was sorta neat. Whoever made this obviously put a lot of hard work and time into making it as realistic as possible. It's free and doesn't require you to sit there and play for hours a day to do good. It is all online and text based. So it's unlikely to interest those not already interested in aviation.

EDIT- I updated the link so it takes you to the latest version of the game, instead of an old version like before. Also removed the screenshots that showed the old version.

That's pretty cool. :)

I've played a bunch of these types of games and I'm not really impressed. This is because city pairs are normally treated as a % of traffic from a given airport to a given airport, which disallows transfers to other airports and ignores huge parts of traffic airlines have.

Personally, the most fun online air simulator I played was "Airmogul.net" I played about six worlds for a period of six months and I really enjoyed it, plus, the community over there is great.

I really can't wait for "Airline Traffic Manager" to be released. Finally a REAL airline simulator that doesn't compromise... However, it was first due to release in 2001... oh dear.

Their website says they're still working on it...

As a side note, I actually went through a LOT of math to develop my own version of this game. Got done with some of the programming and just didn't have to time to continue.

Glad to see I'm not the only one here who finds this kind of game fun.

So are you starting an alliance?

I had some time to kill this morning so I started Miami Air

Cool. I wanted a market with less competition, so I started Awesome Air based in Bangkok. We can start an alliance if you get to Asia or I get to North America :)

I created an alliance. I will send invitations to you two. It will be pretty spotty until we get bigger and can actually link together.

Right now I am planning on having hubs at Chicago, Orlando, Washington DC, and San Francisco. Focus cities of Seattle, Amsterdam, Honolulu, Seoul, and Houston. It will take ages to build a network that big but I'm up for the challenge. It would be nice if those of us in the alliance have complementary hubs (or at least not the same ones). The only thing I've built anything out of so far is Chicago, so the rest is still up in the air really.

I can create little logo graphics for your airlines if you want. Just tell me what you want on it. Or you could create your own.

They just recently did a reset of the game, so there is fairly little competition on most routes and there is plenty of gate space at all the airports. Also 1 month in the game = 24 hours. So you can't really grow to a huge airline in just a few days.

I'm so impatient with this. Definitely not the right time to start this when Finals are coming up, so I'll try with this after Finals.

Also heres a little tip. When you look at the used aircraft for sale, don't buy the 15+ year old Concorde/DC10/L1011. They cost so much to operate it's hard to make any profit. Stick to buying newer aircraft. Having to wait for new aircraft deliveries does suck though. :slob:

The autoprice feature seems to work best as it will automatically adjust the pricing when there is more competition/less competition. For all but a few of my routes that seemed to work the best.

My problem is that I'm too impatient to save money long enough to buy any proper aircraft.

As such, I operate a fleet of Cessna's which I can't imagine many real-world passengers would be comfortable flying on, but it seems to be working for me in the game.

Yea. I have more Cessna Caravans than anything else right now. I put them mostly on rural routes with no competition. You can make a ton of profit doing that.

Since the game was reset not that long ago, there isn't a ton of competition on any of the routes really. So you can make a profit doing almost anything. I imagine that will change as everyone expands more. You do start to make money fast though once you get a few aircraft. I'm looking at about 12M profit per month (24 hours) now. Still waiting till I can get my first 737...

Is it broken? I can't figure out how to get on to check my airline. I just get an "opps, can't find that page!"

ah, it's back now. It's kind of fun, just a little buggy. Sometimes pages load in a split second, other times it takes 20+ seconds to load. Logs me out way too much. It sometimes even logs me out on the very next page I load, right after I just logged in. There also doesn't seem to be any mechanism for slowing down the exponential growth of the biggest airlines. I'm seeing that Dreamline airline company place A380-800's on routes that barely have enough traffic to fill that size a plane and charging prices as low as $199-$299. Those big airlines seem to be generating so much cash, that they have more jumbo aircraft, than they know what to do with. I also wish we could set aircraft on like once or twice a week service, which would allow access to longer range, medium markets and still be able to offer round trip service despite being longer than a 22 hour block time. I'm also not figuring out what function alliances have. They don't seem to be increase connecting load factors, drive away competition or anything at all. It can definitely be improved; I hope they iron out some of these issues soon.

I'm on... Air Melba (Sim 2) IATA: M6. Give me some traffic! :D

I started Alabama Airways IATA: X8. Current hub is Huntsville - HSV (yea, I know completely not realistic) hoping to expand to three hubs with O'hare and Salt Lake, possibly another western hub.

Try the Beta server, which you set the frequency in a weekly basis.

Yea. Don't bother with "SIM 2" as it's called. It is very unrealistic compared to "SIM 2 Beta", which is the only version they are updating.

Can register here: http://aetest.simulationcloud.net/newuser.php

I'll change the initial post to reflect this.

yep. I just jumped shipped again to SIM2.

finally some more aussie ports :D And just more realistic.

Kngkyle, can I join your alliance? :P

Air Melbourne is my airline's name

I'm not in an alliance. Flying solo now.

I did not like the SIM2 Beta at all. It had some good features, but was much harder to use and not as fun to use. So I am sticking with the normal SIM2.

How's about I start one?

You can start SEA-MEL and LAS-MEL and we'll be able to feed each other.

My fledgling outfit: http://aetest.simulationcloud.net/playerinfo.php?player=24639

edit: doh, just realised that in 1984 no aircraft could make MEL-North American west coast non-stop :(

I don't think the alliances feed each other's load factors. I'm pretty sure alliances have no function at all. Looking at all the top airlines, none of them are even in alliances.

Enjoy. I unloaded everything. It isn't realistic enough for me. They are talking about fixing that in the coming months though so I'm still keeping an eye on the game.
