The Calgary crane count thread continues here. I can't promise to be as detailed with my count, I don't know the makes and exact model numbers of the cranes, but I will try to keep the list as accurate as possible. You'll have to help me out on a lot of the suburan sites, as I'm not in those parts very often.

I think Highbury still has a crane - there was one when I drove by 2 weeks ago.
Also is there still a crane at the Glenmore Water Treatment plant? You should be able to see it from your place.
Astoria?

I'll add Highbury and Astoria, Water Treatment plant is clear. None up there anymore.

I think Mount Royal may have a few, and what about the UofC?

Yes Chinook must still have one or 2.

That I can check out with binoculars when I get home tonight.

I may also be able to see over to MRU and get a count on the east side of the campus at least.

I was very surprised to see a crane being used to build a big new house on Marquette Street in Mount Royal. It isn't a tower crane so it wouldn't warrant inclusion on this list, but I just thought I would mention it as the house is quite the construction project and worth checking out. There are lots of new houses to see in Mount Royal. There is one being built on Earl Grey Crescent that I look forward to seeing when it is completed.

You're not going to believe this but I believe that Stampede crane truck got into an accident with a vehicle on southbound Macleod just after the Elbow river. There are a couple of cars off to the side with the Stampede truck stopped a little farther south, traffic is down to one lane getting through with the cops on scene and HAWCS currently orbiting overhead.

Edit: They have actually blocked ALL southbound lanes of Macleod and have traffic making that u-turn back onto northbound. I hope there wasn't a fatality.

Only 33 cranes? The economy is tanking!!!

There's a crane set up at Red Haus in Royal Oak. It's not huge but it's not a truck crane, so it's some sort of tower crane (even if it's just for a 4 story structure). I can't remember the "official" crane criteria anymore - come back Frink!!!!!!

If it is one of those ones operated from the ground I won't include it in the count. I think it has to be a tower or luffer crane that has a cab up top with the operator in it.

crane_guy
Aug 15, 2010, 11:12 PM
that is as full "fledged"of a crane as any, the cab is on the opposite side that picture is taken from. the tower height of that crane is low, as there is no building above grade. as i understand it, the entire call center is below grade and there will be park above it.
that particular crane has done several 20+ story jobs in calgary, also that particular model of crane has done many of the 12 story+ buildings in calgary over the last ten years.
that crane is erected on a static base and uses ballast weights instead of a foundation to "balance" out the top of the crane. that base is also designed to be used as a "traveler" it uses a set of wheels known as bogies and is set on rails to travel long lengths on a site. as an example the city water center office had the same make/crane with a traveling base.

the small tower cranes that are operated by remote control are know as self erect cranes. the main differences is that self erect cranes can be erected with out the assistance of another crane. they also swing from the bottom, the slew bearing or turntable is located at the bottom of crane along with its counter weight which also acts as ballast weight. these cranes are not secured to the ground they have outriggers similar to a mobile crane.
theyare small but can have jib lengths of 150 feet and hook heights of about the same, with very limited lifting capacities.
