Heh. Darryl Sutter on offense vs defense. (http://www.calgaryherald.com/sports/Sutter+fine+with+coaches+believes+Flames+still+playoff+team/3885388/story.html)

In New York and New Jersey, the Flames simply could not muster any offence. But scoring, in Sutter’s mind, is far from the No. 1 concern with this team.

Quite the opposite, actually.

"There’s enough goals in our lineup," Sutter said. "That’s the truth. The problem for us is that our goals-against is not good enough."

The Flames rank 18th in the NHL with an average of 2.81 goals per game. They slip to 19th in goals against with an average of 2.95 a game.

Just found this funny considering recent discussion. Oh, and Darryl: there are currently 5 playoff-ranked teams with a worse goals against total.

lol Flames make it to overtime, take a penalty (as usual). Then Pronger gets the "Sean Avery" penalty for covering Kiprusoff's eyes with his glove as the Flyers score.

I think that call is total bullshit. I don't see how it's any different than a player standing atop the crease, trying to intentionally screen the goalie (which the way things are going, will be a penalty pretty soon).

God, I hate the NHL sometimes.

freeweed
Nov 26, 2010, 9:42 PM
I'm incredibly old-fashioned, but I find pretty much all of today's goaltender screening to be unsportsmanlike. I pine for the days when people actually scored, not fluked in pucks that the goalie couldn't even see. Of course we'd have to trim the pads down about 70%...

Flames beat the #1 team in the league. Time to plan the parade boys! That's points in lots of recent games!

It's one thing to screen, but it's another when a player if putting a glove over a goalie's face mask.

The fact that it was Pronger who did it probably had something to do with it being called a penalty.

No, it probably shouldn't have been waived off. But there's no doubt it was "Unsportsmanlike Conduct" which he was penalized for.

It would be interesting to know if the referee was going to call the penalty before the Flyers scored, but I guess we can't know that.

It was the latter.

Not exactly. Now that I've seen it, I'd say it was something in the middle, but definitely deliberate. This wasn't accidental nor brief, this was basically a more subtle copy of what Avery did.

Apparently Pronger's excuse was that he was "directing traffic". Except no player in NHL history has ever directed traffic that way, Pronger is not one to do that, and it's pretty clear that he's deliberately using his arm to block the goaltender's view.

With the NHL lacking a penalty for "douche move", they had to settle with unsportsmanlike.

Nicko999

We just played our worst game of the season.:yuck:

PK Subban and Josh Gorges, currently our 2 best D-man had their worst game of the season(career in Subban's case).

Vancouver is a whopping 2 points up on Colorado at this point, and they haven't even lead the division all season. I wouldn't be anywhere near confident they'll keep it up. They're a couple of key injuries away from losing it.

With the NW being arguably the weakest division in the league now (wow, times sure have changed) it'll be pretty funny if they don't win it. Seeing as they're supposedly cup favourites.

Yeah, he was talking about it with like 5 minutes left - moron. To be fair, Buffalo looked to be coming on pretty hard towards the end, but Price did look sharp.

Toronto has now been shutout 5 times this season - out of 22 games. Ouch.

Oh, and the Flames continue to suck. We damn well better get that lottery pick. If the Oil take another, they're going to be scary in 2-3 years (assuming they can ever get decent goaltending).

Too bad Price lost his shutout in the last minute.:( He would have had a league leading 5th SO.

In my opinion, Price is the front-runner for the Vezina trophy right now:

22 games(1st in the NHL), 14-7-1(1st in the NHL), 1.95 GAA, 4 SO(1st in the NHL), .935 sv %

I can't believe believe people question the Nuck's winning the NW. Ya, Colorado has had a good run so far and they might pose a threat, but Vancuver is 2-0 against them so far this season. No one else in the division is even on the radar.

Yume-sama
Nov 28, 2010, 5:40 PM
Now that Stewart is out in Colorado they're probably not much of a threat.

Until they face Calgary and still score 7 goals somehow.

The Oilers game last night was entertaining. I actually enjoy watching the Oilers. Whatever happens they always seem to at least *try*, which is something that I haven't seen from the Flames in several years. Interesting that Renney talked about the Oilers falling in to the pit of low expectations early on. I think the Flames are already there, the players must know that the fans don't really expect them to win pretty much ever, anymore, and as a result they don't really seem to give a damn whether they win or lose. Not like years ago where fans were positive the Flames could win *any* game.

Now it's just wondering how much we'll lose by.

Thats what I'm saying. I mean you just have to have a bit of hockey sense to know how this season is going to turn out. Don't bother telling that to Flames fans though. I've gone back through past NHL threads and their predictions have always been way off.

The Canucks may win the NW division but they'll still choke in the playoffs, most likely against Chicago for the 3rd time in a row.

Chicago wouldn't beat Vancouver this time around. Not without their heart and soul players, Byfuglien, Ladd, etc.

They're not too special of a team this year, and Marty Turco should join Martin Brodeur in the retirement line.

Everybody knows the trick to scoring on either of them is to throw it at their feet. Old men can't bend over anymore.

That guy is one solid hit from retirement.

Perhaps. People were weary of Bergeron's return, too, and he has turned in to one of the best two way centers in the NHL and was great in the Olympics. I certainly wouldn't sell too much to get Savard & Sturm back in to the lineup. Sturm is more fragile than Gaborik. There's a big strong rumour that Savard was in the process of being traded to Calgary for Regehr, but failed the physical in the Summer :D

Speaking of the Flames, is Kotalik still alive? Where the heck is he...

Playing as early as tomorrow, if you can believe the Flames. And yet one more highly overrated past-his-prime-anyway player will receive huge ice time over younger, more promising players.

Maybe THIS TIME I'll be proven wrong. I mean, after Jokinen and Stajan have pissed away $7.5 million this season, surely THIS overpaid forward will achieve, right?

As Principal Skinner said: Prove me wrong, kids. Prove me wrong.

I've got both Stamkos and Kessel on my hockey pool team.. so I'm kinda hoping for a 7-6 Toronto OT win, with Kessel and Stamkos both getting double hat tricks of course..
A man can dream can't he?

I have stamkos on the SSP hockey pool! I'll only trade him if some trade blows me away. Anyway great game by flames!

What was up with all the empty seats in Ottawa last night? I thought all Canadian teams have been selling out every night for the past 5 or 6 years? did Ottawa fans not get the memo?

shofear - the attendance issue for the Kanata Senators has already been discussed just a few pages back - it would be like if the Oilers built their new arena in Spruce Grove.

:P Kind of a poor excuse. If the team was in Regina people would drive from 6 hours away to come see them every night.

Though I have heard the arena access is quite poor. It can't really be *worse* than the Saddledome is now, though. Yeah, it's in the core (with only one road in, one road out), but expect 45 minute waits in the parking lot, especially considering that after they upped parking to $12 they took away all of the parking / traffic control that helped people get out in an orderly fashion.

Oh, if only the underpass was finished. 25 years too late, but it'll be nice!

Yeah, but only if their football team was lacing up the skates.

Actually, I would drive 6 hours to see the Saskatchewan Roughriders get their asses kicked in hockey, too.

Gahhhh Leafs play well all game.. up until the 55 minute mark.
TB ties it up with 7 seconds left.. and Gagne scores the OT winner after ridiculous over passing by Schenn.
Blew a 3-1 lead to lose 4-3.. Jesus Christ Leafs TAKE THE DAMN SHOT!
