As impressive as the Canucks' 17 game point streak was, I can't help but think that perhaps the team peaked too early.
Any team would be jacked to have a streak like that at the tail end of the year heading towards the playoffs, but when a streak like that happens well before the All-Star break, it doesn't exactly mean that the team will have its shit together when the playoffs arrive.

Flames and Canadiens alumni to face-off in outdoor game
Calgary, AB– Calgary, AB – The Calgary Flames are proud to celebrate the history of its organization by announcing that Flames from the 1989 Stanley Cup winning team will meet the Montreal Canadiens Alumni in an outdoor game Saturday, February 19th, 2011. The historic match up is set to face off outdoors at McMahon Stadium at 4:30pm (M.S.T).
In addition to the ’89 alumni, original Flames including first Captain Brad Marsh, Calder Trophy winners Willi Plett and Eric Vail as well as Randy Holt, Bob Murdoch, Ken Houston, Kent Nilsson and any available alumni who have made Calgary their home after hockey will be participating in events and appearances in the weekend branded Faceoff in the Foothills.

I'm a bit disappointed with this. Wasn't the Alumni game in Edmonton on the same day as the regular game? And included with the same ticket? I also find it odd that the Flames have not notified STHs about this at all, nor given us any indication of ticket options. Unless it's included in the same ticket or something, but that's not the impression I get from media reports.
Speaking of the Flames, expect the sellout streak to end soon. For tonight's game plus the next 2, they're giving away a $10 food and beverage voucher with each nosebleed seat. They've obviously been having trouble selling them. Free food and drinks to entice fans to a hockey game - what is this, Phoenix? :haha:
Yume-sama
Jan 22, 2011, 7:54 AM
If you look up to the nosebleeds you can see a good number of seats on the sides completely empty. You can also buy tickets like 5 minutes before any game starts at any price level. I think the Flames are buying their own tickets to get the "sell out" :P As for the Alumni game, I'm not surprised the Flames are trying to milk us for all they can. Parking was raised to $13 (from $12) just this last week, and I wouldn't be surprised if season ticket prices go up another 10% (or more, like the last 6 years) because we're dumb enough to pay it. From what I understand, though, if you buy Alumni tickets you get a free ticket to the AHL game or the WHL outdoor game.
I couldn't make it to the game tonight, and I literally could *not* give the tickets away. I posted on Facebook and people laughed.
This reminds me of pre-2004 lol
When I go to the games I hardly ever see any of the other season ticket holders near me who I've known for years. I think I'm the last to give up.

Only Toronto ever thought he was worth anything as a hockey player. And no thanks, I don't want even more of their castoffs.

4 points is a meaningless thing. The Flames will still be only 1 game above .500. Finishing the season like that would mean 84 points. I don't think any team has made the playoffs in decades with such a miserable total.
Regardless of how the actual points look today, the Flames will likely need to be at least 10 games above .500 - and probably a few more - in order to make the playoffs. Which means they'll have to be a fuck of a lot better for no reason all of a sudden, for a LONG stretch.
They're not mathematically eliminated, but there is zero reason to believe they have any hope at this point. Unless Stajan, Kotalik, and Jokinen are all involved in serious car accidents and we actually give some of our kids in the minors a chance. Oh, and we'll have to figure out Kipper's woes, teach Borque to play consistently, and .. hell, get another half dozen guys to show up every single night instead of just once every couple of weeks.

Could someone explain to me what the hell is going on with the Habs?
They couldn't score goals early in the season and won games because they scored first.
But suddenly we've become the BEST team in the NHL for comebacks.
We were losing 3-1 with 3 min 40 sec left in the game before finally tying the game with 13 seconds left.
Maybe Pacs should always play with a bruised rib... 3 goals in 2 games since his "injury";)

OK, I am speechless. That was one of those video reviews where you clearly knew the puck was in, but there was no clear shot of it being over the line, and you just know it's going to be waived off. I cannot believe they called it good. Video review never goes that way.
What a hell of a game. Vancouver may not have played their best game of the season, but they sure played hard. This was not "yeah, Calgary won but the opponents didn't really come out". This was a top team playing a damn good game, and we held our own. I was suitably entertained (and yelling at the TV) for almost all of it. The Jackman goal had us literally jumping out of our seats.

After a major fan favourite of many years returned to town, was resoundingly boo'd, and the Montreal contingent here quite smugly assured me that booing a returning player (even one fans loved) was not only perfectly acceptable, but what you'd expect from passionate fans...

Kovalev and Koivu can't be compared...
Both were very involved in the community but Kovalev played for the Habs 5 seasons while Koivu played for the team 13 seasons and was captain for 9 of them. He is the longest serving captain in team history tied with Jean Beliveau.
Kovalev also had a contract offer from Gainey but took too long to reply so the Habs went with Gionta.
Koivu on the other hand wasn't offered anything by the team.

So he's the most productive player at even strenght (even better than Plekanec) playing with 3th liners and somehow it is not good enough to find a place on the PP for him.
At the Habs skills competition, he was the ONLY player to shoot the puck at more than 100 mph (he even did it twice).
add the fact he's huge and is the only top 6 forward with Pacioretty that can destroy someone.
How can you not give PP time to a 4th overall pick?
Martin did give Pacioretty PP time and what are the results? 6 goals and 11 pts in 19 games. Not bad for a 22 years old who started the season in Hamilton.

Yup, the only thing I can tell that their doing better than when they were losing is passing the puck more effeciently and crowding the net for rebounds more often. To be honest I think they're finally coming together as a team. If Sutter was still here he'd have started making trades already and brought in new guys to learn a system overnight... and then take no responsibility to why they were still losing.

Another W for the Flames, they just seem to want it more. I think you're right Jay, they are definitely coming together now. There were signs of it before in some games, but they weren't quite there. I have to laugh that their best success comes when Iggy and Jokinen don't play on the same line.

I've only been saying this for 2 years now.
I find it highly awesome to see a power play unit of Iginla, Morrison, and Jackman. Who the hell would have seen that in October?? :haha:

I think the Flames came to a cross road and have chosen their path. They could of either gone into full rebuilding mode (which is funny because most of the fans were calling for just that less than a month ago) in which case they would have a fire sale of their roster and tank the season. Or they could make a push for the playoffs. Seems they've chosen the latter of the two. Question for Flames fans though, are you worried that this could be all for not and the Flames could finish 9th or10th spot which would really hurt them in the draft, or has the euphoria of this 4 game winning streak still not worn off yet?

Dancing Iggy has changed this team. Jarome tried so hard last night. He *wants* to see that video over and over.
The Flames need to make one for them all :P
Also, since Moss & Jackman started referring to themselves as Crosby and Malkin they've been amazing. The only lazy mf-er on this team nowadays seems to be J-Bouw. He must have a timeshare somewhere in Mexico in mid-April from the last 8 years or so that he's not willing to let go of. Think of the cancelation fee! Though he is better than at the beginning of the season lol

I was on the fence about a re-build, but now I think they are on the right course. The fortunate thing for the Flames is that the conference is extremely competitive, they aren't the only team struggling. It's because of this that the last month's worth of hockey has brought them to within 2 points of the last playoff spot, if they can keep this kind of play up, they should be able to squeak into that last playoff spot.

I presume you were at the game last night, or saw the interview with him otherwise... I have never in my life seen so much cheering for an empty net goal. Dancing Iggy has changed the fans around, that's for sure. My hunch is that it was originally supposed to be Jokinen.
To the earlier comment: my money's on a 9th place heartbreaker. And it may well come down to the very last game of the season.

There is really no difference between tearing the team apart at the trade deadline and doing so in the off season. Rebuilding through the draft is a long painful process with no guarantee of success. Calgary's most valuable assets still have years left on their contracts so there is no rush. If we really end up needing to tear the team apart and start fresh, which I am not sure we do, then a solid run for a playoff spot could be advantageous. It can make our assets look a great deal more valuable than if they spend the rest of the season sucking.
I also tend to think that the problems have been overblown. There is a lot of parity in the league today. Outside of a few teams that are serious disasters, just about everyone has a chance. Hell there are currently eleven teams in the western conference with a nine point spread between them. The bottom two, Columbus and Saint Louis, have a game in hand over the top, Nashville, and three over the team tied with them for fourth, Anaheim. Any of those eleven teams could realistically end the season with a pretty decent playoff position to make a run for the cup. Outside of Edmonton, there is not a single team in the Western that should look at the current standings and decide to give up.

Haha, well dancing Iggy is better, though Olli would have been hilarious (even if we never get to see it :()
The Flames should do some sort of cool video for every player whose likely to score.

Well, except that at the trade deadline you can often get more from teams desperate to fill a hole in their lineup. In the off season they're not quite so antsy.

This is most definitely true. Guys like Stajan, Jokinen, Kotalik - they have almost zero value right now (especially considering their insane contracts). Let them somehow manage a decent last third of the season - and even better, a playoff run - and their trade value will go up immensely.

I have to say that Jokinen has been playing better in the recent past and present.

Unfortunately for the Flames, they lead the league with 6 shootout wins (lead the NHL as well with 10 shootouts).
So they have virtually no chance of winning any tie-break.
Saying this because when the standings are so tight, it usually comes up to who holds the tie-breaker.

I think that besides Edmonton, there isn't a team in the West that doesn't eithert have an honest shot at playoffs or risk losing their current spot if they are above the cutoff.
However, I have full confidence that Calgary will blow it.
