More importantly, their play of late. Compare them to Minny, or Anaheim. Teams that are barely holding on night-to-night.
We'll still be having the exact same discussion 10 games from now. I wouldn't be surprised if 3 (or even 4) positions are decided in the last 3 games.

Ok, I apologize to Gauthier and to the Habs... Carey Price has matured faster than I expected and keeping him was the right choice.
Carey Price: 56 GP, 29 wins, 2.38 GAA, 0.921 sv %, 6 SO
Jaroslav Halak: 43 GP, 19 wins, 2.63 GAA, .907 sv %, 4 SO
I wish all the best to Halak though. He's on the IR right now.:(

MONTREAL — When Carey Price was drafted, it was with the foresight that he could one day ascend through the ranks of great Montreal goaltenders the Canadiens have been blessed with throughout their rich history.
Despite the bumps and bruises along the way, Price is quickly climbing his way to the top.
Comparisons to Patrick Roy and Ken Dryden are grossly unfair, but the goaltender from Anahim Lake, B.C., may one day be grouped among them if he can bring this era's team a Stanley Cup win or two.
Last night's start against Atlanta was Price's 54th of the season.
It would've been his 55th had he not been ailing on Saturday when the Carolina Hurricanes were in town.
After 56 appearances overall, Price has a goals against average of 2.38 (the best of his four-year NHL career).
His save percentage of .921 eclipses his career best, set in 2007-08 as a rookie on the East's best team.
He's notched more shutouts this year (6) than in his other three NHL seasons combined (5).
Price is on pace to start 69 games this season, and if he does, that will mean he'll have appeared in 71 of the 82 games on the schedule.
By the end of this season, provided he stays on the pace he's currently set for, the 23-year old Price will have played 205 NHL games.
In Dryden's first full season, he played 64 games and notched a 2.24 goals against average.
It was the most he ever played in one season, over his career.
Dryden played 236 NHL games in his first four years, and by the end of that time, he was 27 years old.
The year after Patrick Roy won Montreal its last Stanley Cup, he played 68 games and notched a 2.50 goals against average.
He never played more in a season. By the end of his fourth NHL season, Roy had played a total of 186 games, at 23 years old.
Price's Canadiens will never resemble Dryden's crew of perennial winners.
Patrick Roy may have authored two Montreal Cups on underdog teams, but they scored enough for him to slide through 1985-86 with a 3.35 GAA and an 875 SA%.
They scored enough for him in '92-93 to win 31 of 62 games with a 3.05 GAA and an .895 SA%.
The team Price had achieved his previous NHL-bests for (the Canadiens in 2007-2008) led the league in goals for, with 262. This year's version ranks 23rd in the category, with 168 goals in 64 games.
And though it may not only be about the numbers, what Price has achieved--with more than 75% of this season expired--shows you the progressive path his career is on.
In the 30 games the Canadiens have scored three or more goals for Price: 23-3-4.
In the 30 games Price has allowed two goals or less: 26-2-2.
Including his six shutouts, Price has allowed a goal or less in 17 of his 54 starts.
Price is 7-3-2 when facing 35+ shots, and 2-1-1 when facing 40+.
In the 26 games, in which the Canadiens failed to score more than two goals, he's still managed 14 points in the standings for them (6 W, 2 OTL).
As I stated before, the numbers only tell part of the story.
The rest of it is about his revival from the abyss he was buried in for an entire calendar year preceding this season; a revival that's had the Canadiens sitting pretty in a playoff spot for the entire season.
It's about a 23-year old man who was anything but at 22.
It's about a person thrust in what's generally conceded as the highest pressure-position in all of sports, delivering much more than what was expected of him.
It's about the growth of an individual that may very well earn the comparisons unfairly thrust upon him as a 20-year old rookie--a true thoroughbred.
One thing's for sure, at $2.75 mil on the cap, Price is among the league's most valuable players. Can you think of others earning as much or less, providing as much value to their respective teams?

I expect the situation to be somewhat clarified ten games from now. One or two more teams ought to have dropped out and a similar number should have solidified their position as play off teams. That said, I wouldn't be shocked if five teams are competing for the last three slots all the way down to the wire.

Um, no shit sherlock? The same could be said about every single goaltender in the league. Win a couple of Cups and no kidding you're being treated as one of the upper echelon.

He started out underperforming quite a bit, and (as many people know) was not very popular in Toronto. After he came back from his injury he's been slow to start, but it was noticeable in January that he's stepping up his physical game.
He's currently started to step up the rest of his game too, though he still has room to improve and seems to be steadily improving.
As for leadership, I'm not in the dressing room so I can't tell, but it doesn't seem like any of the players are complaining yet.

That's not exactly an argument. The best way is to look at it, is by the conference's record head to head, and the west has the better record, in games/points and also in goals vs the eastern conference. Also, all hockey analysts agree that that the west is the tougher conference.
That said, in the end though it doesn't matter. Any team can beat any other team on a given night. There isn't that much of spread between top to bottom teams, and not much of difference between the two conferences. Sure the Habs swept the Canuck, but didn't the Oilers not sweep the habs?

Chicago will probably finish 4th. Right now Calgary sits in 5th and the next 4 are all in the Pacific, so we should be in good shape (as long as the number number of OT games is limited (stupid Stars and Ducks)). In the end though the Flames control their own fate; looking at the rest of the schedule nearly every game is against teams we are competing with (7 more games against Pacific teams this month).

Hear that everyone? Might as well send him back to the ECHL!
I mean it's not like any Habs current goaltender had a shaky game, let alone season right?

Didn't Patrick Roy once let in like 9 or something?
Then go on to be Avs Patrick?
Stinkers happen to every goalie. We'll see how he does from here on end against the Leafs horrid schedule.

Well, congrats to Luongo for his 300th win yesterday. At the age of 31, he is the 6th fastest goalie to reach that mark. Of course, Martin Brodeur and Patrick lead with 403 wins and 349 wins respectively at that age.
Wins by the age of 31.

^ I cannot help but think he would have achieved that goal faster if he had not been in Florida for 5 seasons, though perhaps not fast enough to change positions on that list...

Is this a dream? Kovalchuk scores again (added an assist) and the New Jersey Devils win.
20-2-2 in their last 24 games!!!:koko:
Let's just all hope they don't make the playoffs.:uhh:

Nice hard fought win for the Flames.
Iggy, 10 straight seasons with 30 or more goals. He's in very elite company.

Attended the Ducks-Canucks game today(or now yesterday), unbelievable how many Canucks fans were there- many were from the game in LA last night too. I feel sorry for the Ducks, it must have felt like an away game. :haha: Anyways, great win by the Canuckleheads.
By the way: I am not exaggerating in the least bit, at least 1/2 the crowd was wearing blue. :awesome:

Is Hall really done for the year? What a fucking idiot, serves him right for trying to fight a goon.
yup
why? he asserted himself and simply had bad luck with the ankle.
Congrats to Iggy, love how he plays (historically)

I just think its a silly thing to do for a guy who gets paid to put up points and is a rookie no less to fight a goon of all people. Sometimes you gotta swallow your pride and let a teammate take care of it and answer on the score sheet.

My only issue with it was that he had a decent chance still to be in contention for rookie of the year... he was going to get a TON of playing time.

Way to go Iggy  nice to see him up there in a category with guys like Gretzky, Bossy, Kurri, Jagr, Esposito, etc.. A future Hall of famer for sure

Iggy is class all the way, glad to see him still in Calgary, and very glad to hear the response to the announcement of his 10th 30 goal season. I really hope he retires here.

I'm glad Vancouver finally got a jersey colour that works in large numbers.
18,000 people wearing black or navy blue just isn't the same as bright red or blue (I'd like to see a team wear green too (real green, not that bs the Wild wear).

The Flames are really turning on the heat. It's a real possibility that they can finish as high as 4th place.

Quote from December 13!
The best goal scorer from the AHL has been called up. He will likely play on the second line.
I understand why now!!!:sly: Scoring is not much of a problem anymore with Pacs, Desharnais and Wiz added to the lineup.:)

Yes, that's right... in 36 games only!!! Had he played all 66 games, he would be third in the NHL behind Stamkos and D.Sedin for PP goals.
I love our future... Price in nets, Subban at the back end and Pacioretty as the power forward (hopefully). Desharnais is another rookie with a good production (16 pts in 27 games). Lars Eller is also playing better.

What a accomplishment.

The hottest team in the league since Christmas (21-6-6). I hope they can keep playing the way the way the played last night, they are looking alot like the Flames of 04....a real 'in your face' hard working team.

Vancouver's third line has caught fire lately and has been a major offensive force in the last couple of weeks. So with this in mind, I got thinking:
Who is the most underrated player for your team?
As a Canucks fan I think Jannik Hansen is probably the most underrated player for Vancouver. He has been consistent all year (not point-wise, but effort-wise), is a significant part of the PK, can chip in offensively, but most impressive of all is his ability on the forecheck and harassment of the puck-carrier. The guy just doesn't give up. . . and that is why he has my vote.

Underrated for Calgary is almost certainly Mark Giordano. He may be the most underrated player in the entire league, for that matter.

We have 2 games in hand and 34 non-shootout wins vs 28 non-shootout wins for Calgary.
But you're right though, I would never have imagined Calgary being 5th in their Conference this late in the season. It's the second best turnaround this season.

Oh well let's just say both teams are red hot... However the Devils are currently(the last 20-something games) hotter.

Plekanec is the most underrated player on this team. He is our best forward offensively AND defensively.
However, I am very tempted to say Pacioretty... he is still pretty much unknown around the NHL.
What a story he has been this season...
Started in the AHL. He publicely said he wanted to stay in Hamilton for the season. He was not interested in joining the Habs if not in the top 6.
He DOMINATED the AHL before being called up by the Habs. We, as Habs fans, were shocked at how much better he was compared to previous seasons. Just ask Chara or Lundqvist about it.:haha:
-He was the one who scored to tie the game with 12 seconds left vs Anaheim.
-He was the one who got a puck in the ribs and didn't even miss a game. In fact, he scored 3 times in the following 2 games.
He's even heating up now with 8 goals in his last 12 games.
But the most amazing thing is that he lead the team with 7 PP goals after only 36 games played!!! Some of the older guys can learn from him (I am serious).
