Wow, officiating is awful these days. Anaheim continues to play an extremely dirty game and hardly gets called for anything. I saw 2 blatant headshots last night (one was a crosscheck to the back of a guy's helmet - I mean come on, if you're going to talk headshots this was TEXTBOOK) and neither were called. Plenty of interference that goes unnoticed too (including one that was about 10x later than the Chara hit).

The NHL is a bit of a joke right now. The only reason they call anything is if a guy happens to get injured. But if you're OK, then it's no call. Expect some players to mysteriously get injured during this season's playoffs, only to magically recover once the suspension is handed out.

As far as I'm concerned those fucking refs handed the game to Anaheim with that weak ass elbowing penalty with 4 mins remaining... especially with all the bullshit missed calls to Anaheim!

If you want to blame anyone, blame #17 for consistently taking his EXTREMELY selfish offensive zone penalties.

The guy has even less hockey IQ than Matt Stajan.

I thought only habs fans complained about reffing?

I'm not asking for criminal charges nor a career suspension. Just consistent reffing based on the rules as written, and historical precedent.

The worst part of last night's game was that the inevitable happened - once the Flames saw Anaheim getting away with absolutely atrocious behaviour, they started doing it too. Culminating in the refs finally deciding to call something, a pretty weak "interference" penalty on Borque. In the critical last minutes of the game.

In the old days, inconsistent reffing like this was eventually dealt with by enforcers. These days, thanks to stupid things like the instigator rule, it spirals out of control until players think they can get away with anything (and we end up with the Sean Averys and Matt Cookes of the world).

Battling for a playoff spot and coming up just short is not what I call choking. If San Jose or Detroit managed to miss the playoffs, that would be choking.

Anyway, we seem to play good, tight games against the Kings. Hopefully we can even the season series tonight, which would put us back in 8th.

No, but being down 3-0, coming back 4-3 with 2 mins left and then losing in OT is choking.

Climbing from near dead last to 4th place, only to not make the playoffs is choking as well. I was worried you guys would get a decent draft pick this year...and actually be able to start restocking the cupboards.

Calgarian
Mar 21, 2011, 5:56 PM
Borque deserved that penalty, but so did the Duck. Borque takes retaliation penalties all the time.

feepa, you definition of choking is pretty weak. The Oilers are the definition of choking, missing the playoffs for 5 straight years after making it to game 7 of the Stanley Cup Finals would be more suitable.

As for draft picks this year, it would be nice to get a top 5 pick, but the draft pool looks a little shallow this year, so I don't think it's really a big deal.

Don't write off Calgary yet. They still have 3 gimme games against either the Oilers or Aves. If they win tonight they have a playoff spot locked.

Locked is definitely the wrong word. The Flames have 8 games remaining and they have to win 6 of them to get into the playoffs. That seems really unlikely to me, especially considering their play of late.

They need Nashville or Chicago to have a bad streak. I am pretty confident that if they can get ahead of either one we will have a playoff spot. The Pacific Division teams play each other so much in the final stretch that it is hard to imagine all of them staying in front of the Flames. Unless they really drop ball...

They are definitely a concern but I would be shocked if all five made it in no matter what. It would require a lot of three point games, a reasonably equal division of wins and losses, and other teams to tank badly.

If Lemieux wants to back up his words on head shots in the game, he'd supplement whatever the NHL gives Cooke and make sure he sits for the rest of the season.

"In addition to the grading, we asked the scouts to rank each team's top 10 prospects and 21-and-under NHLers on a letter scale, A-D. We include 21-and-under NHLers because we don't believe teams should be penalized for fast-tracking these players to the NHL," Costello explained.

"The Oilers are a perfect example of that. Taylor Hall, Sam Gagner, Jordan Eberle and Magnus Paajarvi are all 21-and-under. If we didn't include them in the grading, Edmonton would probably be middle of the pack at best. It's certainly a great thing for the Oilers that they have these four great NHLers in the organization."

Although the Oilers have a number of players already developing in the NHL, Costello explained that Edmonton’s deep prospect pool has been equally as valuable.

"There are also a number of Oilers prospects that ranked quite well in our top 50 rating, those being Jeff Petry (32), Tyler Pitlick (62) and Anton Lander (63). It's not just the NHL players that are bumping up the rankings. The Oilers have quite a few excellent prospects in their system helping their overall ranking."

Edmonton’s number one ranking is especially impressive when you consider the talented clubs that the Oilers have overtaken. Los Angeles, with Drew Doughty leading the pack, and Tampa Bay with Steven Stamkos and Victor Hedman are only a few examples of the young talent highlighting the skilled competition.

Add in Teubert, and whoever we draft this summer ( The addition of Landeskog or Larsson will help round off that list nicely.)and the future remains bright.

Patience is my mantra.

It's not just the Oilers that picks don't pan out for. Hall, Eberle, MPS, Omark all look like the real deal. Gagner and Cogs are pretty decent too. Certainly a lot of prospects that in the system as well. I may be counting my eggs a little early, but at least we have some eggs. What does Calgary have? (a: A remote chance to go 6-2 to potentially scratch in to the playoffs and get wiped out in the first round?) outside of that... not much at all :) The cup is very much half (or more) empty for the Flames, whereas with the Oilers, the Cup is half full, and looks to be getting fuller all the time.

It depends on what you want to get out of sports. I'm more of a right now guy, and unfortunately right now the Lames cup is at least half full/empty but the Oilers cup is completely empty - yes we have some good prospects but the Oilers cup won't be full or even half full until they pan out. I think they will, but until then....

Anyhow, I'm happy :) the Lames are looking like they're done for the year after last nights loss

"The suspension is warranted because that's exactly the kind of hit we're trying to get out of the game," Penguins GM Ray Shero said in a statement. "Head shots have no place in hockey. We've told Matt in no uncertain terms that this kind of action on the ice is unacceptable and cannot happen. Head shots must be dealt with severely, and the Pittsburgh Penguins support the NHL in sending this very strong message."

You're right, these picks should work out for the Oil, and they will be a scary team if they do. Though there is a good possibility that some of these players will end up like Robbie Schremp, and be a huge disappointment. Obviously any team takes a gamble on first overall picks (Alexander Daigle anyone?), that's the risk of picking young players.

CAlgary does have some pretty decent prospects, Tim Erixon, Greg Nemisz, Stephan Meyer, Keith Seabrook... Unfortunately none are quite on the level of Hall or Eberle, here's hoping we can begin to rectify that this offseason.

Suban is skilled at a offensive defenseman, while he is useless at being a defensive defenseman.

Both Subban and Carlson play against opposing team's top lines, they sit 1-2 among rookies in shorthanded ice time per game, they both play above 22 minutes per game, they have both produced points and they have each emerged as their respective team's most important defencemen in their rookie seasons.

Marchand's specific play was stupid but he isn't a repeat offender and doesn't constantly do stupid plays like Cooke does.

Hell even Heatley got suspended for an elbow to the head, and I think (and pretty sure you would too cause he isn't a Bruin) that he has a say on the matter. If Marchand comes back 4 more times and does the same thing, THEN he has no right to say anything.

Besides his wasn't as bad as Cooke's was anyways (not result, the actual act itself).

Both Subban and Carlson play against opposing team's top lines, they sit 1-2 among rookies in shorthanded ice time per game, they both play above 22 minutes per game, they have both produced points and they have each emerged as their respective team's most important defencemen in their rookie seasons.

Let me tell you something... if you play more than 22 minutes under Jacques Martin's system you HAVE to be good defensively.

We acquired M-A Bergeron last year when Markov was injured. He had 34 pts in 60 games but we didn't resign him because defensively, he was probably the worst D-man I've ever seen with the Habs (Souray a close second). He didn't play more than 15 minutes a game.

If you can't play defense, Martin will bench you...

This season has been so bizarre...

Habs fans want the Leafs to win because we hate Boston and want the pick to be as worst as possible.

Leafs fans want to Habs to win the division because they have Boston's first.

And I am sure the Leafs will cheer even harder for us tonight.:P

BTW-Boston is lucky to have the loser point (because that's what they are, losers)... we have more wins than the Bruins!!!

GO Devils!!!

If defense players can't play defense, no wonder they would get benched. That's why Subban has been benches a lot this year.

A defensemens job to play defense.

So, do you think that the Flames still have a shot at the playoffs?

No.

They tried and I give them big time props for that (you hear that Bigtime?, I'm giving them props on your behalf!), but they seemed to either peak too soon, or did what the Flames always do, take their foot off the gas too early. Like I said, Dallas and Anaheim need to both lose the 3 games they have in hand for the Flames to stay in.

If they don't make it, I'm curious to see what they do in the offseason; will they see if the success carries over in the latter half of 2011, or blow things up leaving just the core?

They will have to make some moves, this team is too old. Youth is what is winning championships. They should have a bunch of players that are ready to take the next step, though that won't help out Abbotsford much.

I think they'll bring up Bryan Cameron next season to play full time. Besides, he is a hopeful player for the Flames.

You have no idea what your talking about. Subban has played 68 of the teams 73 games so far as a rookie. Thats pretty good if you ask me. He's been great for us defensively.

We're sorry...:( Games like that sucks! No offence at all from either team and the only goal was a nice tip-in. Probably the most boring game of the season.

Too bad the Devils are coming back to reality and couldn't win against the Bruins.

A message to Martin... PLAY THE ROOKIES MORE OFTEN.

Desharnais is better than Gomez in every single aspect of the game. In fact, I have enough of Gomez...put him as the fourth center.:yuck: Plekanec we miss you!

:haha::haha::haha:

Subban was a benched at the beggining of the season when he didn't play well and made mistakes. There was a 2 weeks stretch where he was horrible. Since then, he's been solid defensively.

There's been a few times the Oilers have finished out of the playoffs but if they were in the east, they would've made the it. Tough luck.

Yeah, if we were in the East then that would be one less excuse for missing the playoffs.

Over half the teams in the league make the post-season, so regardless of conference, if your team is on the outside, there are still at least eight better teams above them.

East vs the West: 120-103-34

Pretty equal if you ask me... of those 34 OT/SO losses maybe half of them are in the shootouts (so therefore a tie).

2 years ago we finished 8th in the East. If we were in the West we would have been 6th. We were also 13-4-1 against the West so it means we might have been 1st.:P

It makes a lot of if's...:)

So how many of the 120 wins were in OT or a shootout. Pretty meaningless statistic without both sides.

That's a good point, I didn't think of that.

However, if we exclude OT/SO losses East is 120-137 vs the West. Definately not a HUGE difference. Like I said overall the West is probably a little bit better but the the East has more top teams who have a shot at a Cup.

Philadelphia, Washington, Boston(:yuck:), Pittsburgh, Montreal (if we're healthier, no way we go deep with 8 regulars missing) and Rangers in the East.

Vancouver and Detroit (maybe SJ) in the West.

Yeah it is. I'll cheer for the Canucks till I talk to one of their Douchebag fans, then I'm off that bandwagon. lol

I'm still not convinced Luongo is their saviour either, he has been a choke artist in high pressure situations before.

Niko, put the bong down man, the top 4 in the east are basically the same as the top 4 in the west point wise, you can't tell me there are more contenders in the east.

JEts fans should be nervous, if the Coyotes can ride Bryzgalov deep into the playoffs, people in Phoenix might actually take notice and pay the $5 (or whatever they charge for a family pack down there) and go watch them play.
