HORCOFF NAMED OILERS 13TH CAPTAIN
The Edmonton Oilers have named Shawn Horcoff as their new captain, making him the 13th player to wear the āCā since the team joined the NHL in 1979.
The 32-year-old centre is entering his 10th NHL season, all with the Oilers. Drafted in the 4th round (99th overall) in the 1998 NHL Entry Draft, the 6ā1ā, 208 pound native of Trail, British Columbia has scored 374 points (133G, 241A) with 417 penalty minutes in 637 career games.

According to ESPN, tomorrow night at the Drugstore will be a battle of the basement dwellers this season... they're probably not that far off either! I can't take Calgary's perfect preseason too seriously. Didn't they dress the top line in almost every game?

Horcoff's not the most talented forward, for sure, but he's a versatile centerman who plays hard and makes sacrifices on every play, and proudly wears his heart on his sleeve.
He's one of the few veterans on the Oilers roster from last year who always plays like he actually WANTS to win. His attitude and on-ice hustle is what every leader should exude, and is a very good choice for captain, in my opinion.

Nice way to start the season!!!
Markov-Still not ready but healing faster than expected. Should be back by mid to late October.
Cammalleri-One game suspension
Hamrlik-Will miss the first game with a mysterious injury.
Price-He's sick and will probably be second goalie for the first game.
The season has not even started yet...
The good thing however is that those injuries/suspensions/illnesses are short term absences. Last season all we got was long-term(6 weeks and more).

I think the word 'Knockout' sums it up both figuratively and literally! The punch by McIntyre pretty, much symbolized the game.
The Oilers have served notice that the BofA is back. I'm not too surprised by the Edmonton's play, as they are obviously a much improved team this year, and not just because of the highly touted rookies.
Most of the talk has been of the three rookies, but I think the missing story has been the return of their top three players who were out last year (two from injury and one just plain missing). If those guys and Souray were healthy all year, they would have been a much better team
I'm not so sure the Oilers will be that good all year, and I think the Flames will be better than last night. I expect they'll both be fighting for positions around 6-10th place.

-Last year the Flames steamrolled the Canucks in much the same fashion in the opening game. Nuff said.
-In 2006 the Flames were steam rolled by Minnesota in the opener and eventually won the division title.

I must say I was surprised by TSN's top 10 rookies this year!!!
This season's crop of rookie talent is exceptional.
A blend of forwards, defencemen and goalies will vie for the Calder Trophy, with familiar names and a few surprises considered among our annual Top 10 list.
No. 10: Jeff Skinner
The 18-year-old Carolina forward enjoyed a spectacular training camp. Skinner is considered physically ready for the NHL and will be given tons of playing time to display an offensive talent that saw him score 70 goals in 74 games last season with the OHL's Kitchener Rangers.
No. 9: Jonathan Bernier
The 22-year-old Los Angeles goaltender may be the best of a strong rookie goalie contingent. Bernier has been brought along slowly and is now challenging Jonathan Quick for the Kings' starting job.
No. 8: Oliver Ekman-Larson
The 19-year-old Swede has enjoyed a strong camp with Phoenix and is expected to earn time with the Coyotes on the power play. Ekman-Larson had 33 points in Sweden's second-best league last year.
No. 7: John Carlson
The Capitals have a 20-year-old defenceman who knows how to win. Carlson helped the U.S beat Canada at the World Junior Championship and then won a Calder Cup AHL championship with the Hershey Bears.
No. 6: Magnus Paajarvi
Considered the be the most mature of Edmonton's rookie trio, Paajarvi is highly skilled and has no fear going into the tough areas on the ice. Length of NHL season could wear down the 19-year-old.
No. 5: Tyler Seguin
Boston will experiment with the No. 2 overall draft pick at both centre and the wing. Seguin is exceptionally skilled, but the 18-year-old needs time to work on defensive responsibilities.
No. 4: Jordan Eberle
The vision and scoring ability demonstrated at the junior and American Hockey League shows the 20-year-old is ready to be a full-time NHL player.
No. 3: Taylor Hall
Transitioning from CHL superstar to NHL regular has proven difficult for some 18-year-olds. But the two-time Memorial Cup MVP and No. 1 draft pick has the power and immense talent to make the jump with Edmonton.
No. 2: Tyler Ennis
Buffalo's rookie turned 21 on Wednesday. After recording nine points in 10 NHL games last season, it's easy to see why some regard him as a pre-season favourite for rookie of the year.
And finally...No. 1: P.K. Subban (or "Prime Time" as teammate Mike Cammalleri calls him)
The Montreal defenceman tops this year's Top 10 list. Subban replaced the injured Andrei Markov on the Habs' blueline in the postseason and helped Montreal reach the Eastern Conference Final. Subban handled the pressure with poise and an abundance of energy and will be given added responsibilities as a 21-year-old this season.

I'd like to be optimistic, hell I WANT to be optimistic, but there's very little reason to be optimistic about this old, slow team.
Well, I hold out hope that we'll make the playoffs this year. I think things will come to a head soon. Its just the first game of the season. It may not count for much, but we out shot the Oil. The team's mentality is different this year. Something seemed to work in the pre-season. I know, you can't hold much stock in that, but it does say that our team and lines can function successfully. I'd like to believe we've a legit chance of going far.
I'll be chastised as a Flames fan for saying this, but I think the only team in Canada that has any REAL chance to win the Cup this year is the Canucks. So, I know we're not a contender this year. I'd just love to think things will be better.

I must say I was surprised by TSN's top 10 rookies this year!!!

I would rank Eberle higher especially after what I saw Thursday!
I'm surprised by that too! I don't put very much stock in fresh first overall draft picks winning the Calder. The last one to do that was Patrick Kane, before that it was Bryan Berard, before that it was Mario Lemieux. So, really, I wouldn't rank Taylor Hall very high.
Realistically I think that Subban is about right, Eberle should be #2, and John Carlson #3. After that its anyone's guess really.

Very nice first goal by Tyler Seguin on a breakaway today. Bruins shutout the Coyotes 3 - 0.
Horton has three on the year so far~
This has to be the most amazing class of young players the NHL has ever had. So many, even Schenn in LA was outstanding lastnight.
