Of course it is. Most of the 100+ people arrested in '94 were all from POCO, Coquitlam, Surrey and Maple Ridge.

Honestly, I don't think there is a city that clashes more with it suburbs (culturally and socially) than Vancouver

Those aren't fans. These are opportunists hiding in a big crowd looking to cause trouble.

They hid well, considering most of them are (or were) wearing jerseys. And there are a lot of jersey'd people throwing shit onto the fires, ripping down the crowd control fence, and other antics. The guy who lit up the overturned pickup was wearing the 80s/90s black Canucks jersey.

People are stupid in large numbers, fan or no. Just wait until the sun sets, this promises to get much more interesting.

I think people from other parts of BC and other parts of Canada are a big part of it, too. It's that whole "hillbilly idiot" element of Vancouver's personality. It's tiresome at the best of times. When it flares up at moments like this it's beyond embarrassing.

So, stopping booze sales seems funny in hindsight - several liquor stores have reportedly been looted. That's a lot more booze than would have been available if they just sold it normally.

CBC claims that the Bay actually planned to stay open had the Canucks won. Um, that seems pretty retarded - I don't think this riot is caused so much by the loss as it is just plain idiots. This stopped being about hockey once the first car was tipped and lit. Can you imagine the chaos if the Bay was open right now?

Transit and bridges are being shut down. People (families with kids) are stuck in a theatre afraid to leave. Who in their right mind would have gone downtown tonight with their kids??

As someone mentioned earlier, this is a populated area. Kinda sad to think about the people who live around there. Mind you, apparently some people in apartments have been throwing bottles down on the riot police.

The cops are playing this pretty damned cool. Avoiding any confrontation if possible and not giving the rioters any excuse. It's fascinating to watch compared to riots in the past. One thing I will say - everyone will claim it's a small core group, but fuck. All you idiots standing around with your cellphone cameras are part of the problem. You're allowing the "core group" anonymity and making it extremely difficult for police to get at the troublemakers.

Calgary had tens of thousands concentrated in a smaller area during a game 7 loss, and the worst that happened was some chicks flashed their boobs at the crowd. I was there, and we didn't have anything 1/1000th as bad as tonight. I think I might have seen a couple of guys pushing and shoving.

There's just a certain element that exists in Canada's larger cities that seems to come out for things like this. And they spur a lot more people to do a lot of stupid things. It's not just people in black masks doing stuff tonight, not by a long shot. There are more than enough disenfranchised youth in Vancouver right now who are acting like thugs.
