I sure miss our brown mild winters... it's been 3 straight years now with snow on the ground for more than a month!
Agreed. I thought I was crazy until I checked EC's stats, but my first 3 winters here never had accumulation like this, that just lasted for much of the winter. Then the past 3 have been absolute shit. :hell:

Snowfall warning for much of Alberta, YAY!
This is a pretty interesting system. The forecasts for Calgary are pretty much random dart throws at this point - I've seen anything from 1cm over the next few days to as much as 30! Trying to figure out if the drive to (and especially home from) the ski hill tomorrow will be worth it. Crossing my fingers for an epic (if cold) powder day.

It'll be bumper to bumper irregardless of road conditions as par usual... if it does what it's supposed to, TCH will be dry with the odd icy wheel path when you drive back home with snow blowing across it at 60km/hr ;) , of course untill you get into the city limits where they'll be laying out straight salt making sure to catch all that blowing snow and packing it down on their streets.

Be curious to hear from the Edmontonians just how much fell. We haven't seen a ton of snow yet but holy mother of fuck is it windy. Drifting snow everywhere, and in many cases enough to get cars stuck - unusual when you don't actually have much coming down. I can't even imagine what the highways are like right now (they were bad enough several hours ago before the real winds started up).
Sometimes these "winter storm warnings" are a bit overblown, but they got it right this time.

ST Albert was clearing residential streets today. After the last few snowfalls the pile in front of my place is getting pretty high. And this is the first time I can recall the city clearing the street more than one a winter.

And this is the first time I can recall the city clearing the street more than one a winter.
Calgary continues to needlessly plow residential streets. They were out today scraping off maybe 2 inches from my street, which absolutely no one could possibly have an issue with driving on. However, all that snow makes for nice high icy piles in front of intersections and people's driveways.
It's funny, because the winter hasn't exactly been bad here. A tad cold, sure, and more lasting snow than I'd like, but nothing whatsoever like what you guys are getting. But the city is bound and determined to make it as miserable as possible.
They plow nothing a lot here too, not just with regular plows but with graters, going down a clear street doing nothing but making sparks. At 2am on Sundays and holidays, no less.
I would estimate that my street is plowed about 200 times a winter. During a major snow storm we probably have about 30 to 50 plows go by. That's ignoring the snowmoblowers of death. Sidewalk plows go by all the time too, usually they're plowing less than an inch of snow out of the way. Sometimes they just plow the dirt they put down when they went by a few hours before.
-17 and clear.

I wish we spent the money on sidewalk clearing.
This is shaping up to be by far the worst cold spell in my short time in Calgary. We're looking at 9-10 days of below -10 highs and below -20 lows. I've never seen it stay this cold for so long, not since leaving Winterpeg. :( It'll be interesting to see if the forecasts hold; usually after 3-5 days we get some respite but so far I see zero indication of that happening.

Snow tires don't help much in cases where a vehicle is well and truly stuck (and needing pushing). But don't let that stop your sanctimoniousness. You might as well refuse to help people who are stuck because hey, people should just learn how to drive and if you get stuck, it's your own fault. Also, you should know from weather forecasts when to stay home so tough titties if you ignored that.
Then again, my experiences with true winter conditions are cars stuck in feet of snow where no tires on the planet would help. Maybe Edmonton just happens to have the extreme rare weather conditions where no snow tires = stuck everywhere and snow tires = never stuck anywhere. ;)

Basic winter rules. Make sure your car is in good working order. Check road conditions. If you can postpone the trip then do so. And be prepared if you Do get stuck.
I didn't say I don't help people stuck, I have just gotten tired of helping people that will not prepare. I helped one poor soul that was spinning his tires at a flat intersection. Of the 20 or so cars helped this weekend 1 had snow tires and she was to good looking to pass.:)
And yes people should be taught how to drive in winter conditions. AMA once had it as part of their curriculum.

Snow tires probably serve a purpose, but if you live in a place like Alberta and feel you need to travel when it's shitty out... buy a 4x4, they serve their purpose on snow & ice! Unfortunately they make people think they're invincible, and it's usually 4x4's on their lids in the ditch during a storm because people think they're still able to go 120kms in a blizzard. But driven normally you should never have a problem in winter. And most importantly, by buying one you'll be doing your part in "warming the globe"!

I've personally used my own winter jacket (was ready for the dump anyway), a spare pair of jeans, and several hockey sticks at once for wheel traction over the years. Still, nothing much beats good old muscle power - and a driver who understands how to rock a vehicle.

4x4 actually doesnt really serve any purpose at highway speeds nor does it help you slow down faster. 4x4 is only helpful at slow speeds / stops to avoid getting stuck, and very steep hills (not aware of any highways that steep). Ok, it would be handy when there is over 30cm of unconsolidated snow on the road. But thats probably never happened on the prairies.
I have beast winter tires on my 2WD golf and it is awesome. Its easy to average 90km/h on spray lakes road in the winter, including the winding section from Canmore. Hitting 120/130 on the strait sections is nothing. I actually can't go as fast in the summer thanks to loose gravel, potholes, tourons, and washboards.

this was when we lived in Fort St John which is mile 45 of the Alaska Highway and well we had a gravel driveway so in winter it was basically compacted snow which easily turned to ice
we don't worry down here
I learned to drive and had to take my drivers test in november up north which meant snowy ice covered roads up there - I don't drive down here in the snow though because people here are idiots they slam their brakes and drive way too fast when it snows

Here's what St. John's has and will experienced after months of no snow.
Storm Dumps Record Snowfall on St. John's
Residents of St. John's are recovering after a record snowfall on Thursday. It was the Avalon region's first real taste of winter. A major weather system moved into the area on Thursday and brought with it an estimated 40 centimetres of snow. Environment Canada reports the Avalon region accumulated more snow than was initially expected -- St. John's International Airport registering 40 centimetres of snow, while 15-20 centimetres was recorded in the Avalon North. The southern Avalon and Burin Peninsula received approximately five to ten centimetres. Meteorologist Wanda Rideout says other areas received less snow than was forecasted, with western areas, such as Gander and Terra Nova, only accumulating 15 centimetres of snow.
Rideout says as the system tracks east, the Avalon should expect snow mixed with rain on Friday, about five centimetres, and strong northerly winds. She says conditions are expected to improve as the day progresses and although the weather should clear by Saturday, a few flurries are forecasted for Sunday.
The storm has created many delays and cancellations at St. John's International Airport. Passengers are advised to check their flight's status before heading to the airport. The airport's arrivals and departures page can be found here.

Currently 14 in Victoria! 10 in Van right now (was 11.5 yesterday)
The next 5 days are suppose to be 10 or above in Victoria and Vancouver, yeah!
And don't worry Calgary, the warm air is suppose to spill over into Alberta starting on Monday or Tuesday I believe.

Sure started out monsoon-like today but when the rain ended it was quite mild. It's 12 degrees in Van right now.

It's the warmest temperature in Canada during 2011... I think.
It was also 0.8C from the all-time January high for Victoria which is 15.4C.

Holy mother of christ it's cold here. Just got back from somewhere 40 degrees warmer. This sucks. :(
As far as averages go, today is the middle of the week where Thunder Bay is its coldest. Beginning Thursday, average temperatures start going up!!!
It's currently -15, with a windchill of -26. It sounds cold but this January hasn't been as cold as previous ones. A bit below normal, but that's all.

Blizzard conditions today. -24C with windchills around -30 ― -35C. 5-10cm has fallen with more expected. It has been the 9th or 10th day where it has snowed. People's fences, including mine, are being buried and soon it will be entire cars.
Currently sunny and -45C (air temperature) in Dawson, Yukon :yuck:

Yeah, what the hell is going on in the mountains? It's damn near 0 at the ski hills but -20 here in Calgary.
This is by no means an exhaustive analysis, and full numbers aren't up yet, but from quickly checking EC's records this is the longest cold snap in Calgary in many years (at least as far back as 2004). 8 days where the mercury has not once climbed above -15 or so.

Haven't had this much in more than 10 years. I new I should have bought a snowblower this year. This is also the first time my wife and I can remember that the City (St Albert) has plowed our streets 3 times. Usually once a year is enough. Hell I have thought about putting avalanche warning signs on my house.

Could be as bad as 1990. I remember 1990 in Saskatchewan and walking to school with snow piled higher than my head. Mind you I was in Kindergarten at the time. Some of the piles right now are taller than me, approaching 2 m.

I think 74 we had over a meter of snow settled through January. I was younger and enjoyed getting out shovelling. Now not so much, Haven't been back to the gym in about 10 day.
