After all the rain we got this week, the only snow left in my yard is where I piled all of it.

That's a bit premature. ;) There's still plenty at higher elevations in the city, and on north facing hills and whatnot. I figure we have a solid week of wet and muddy streets at this rate, 2 in the less travelled suburbs.

10 is not bad, and it has been unusually cool in the west this February and first half of March.
On average the warmest places in Canada for March should be Kamloops and Osoyoos. Kamloops has been doing ok the past 10 days with many 12 to 14 degree days, but still no poster child day.
That is the same with Vancouver, nothing really to write home about the past week or so, just a mix of rain, cloud, sun and temps around 9 to 12 for highs.
Amazing day in southern Ontario today, must have felt great!

It is snowing lightly right now. It would be snowing harder but the government gives Quebec all the snow so that they don't separate.

Yeah, but this isn't just any spring snow. This is a week of snow. Plus cold. Basically this is what we should have had 6 weeks ago, except it was 15 degrees below normal then as well.
I'm actually kind of scared as to the real "spring snow" this year. 60cm on May 15, anyone?

They've been forecasting anywhere between 10 to 30 cms each day since Saturday... and we've accumulated all of about 3cms total, in Cochrane anyway! There hasn't been enough to even shovel my driveway.
It sure is icing roads up overnight though with the road temps staying wet & well above zero all day then drastically dropping after the sun goes down and freezing up.

Though signs of spring in March are encouraging, I try to remain philosophical.
All of that snow will eventually melt, and whether it is +2 or +8 outside, what difference does it really make? It's not as if it is going to be +25 in March and we are missing out on nice beach days.
It's only really in May that I start getting impatient about seeing the really warm weather arrive.

It's not as if it is going to be +25 in March and we are missing out on nice beach days.
Calgary in my time has had plenty of +15 days in March, and +20 in April.
Those temps may not call for going to the beach (the water, if we had any around, would still be frozen) - but on a nice sunny day they're plenty warm to break out the t-shirts and go for a nice walk.
Spring is pretty much my favourite season. Not too cold (usually), not too hot. Just the right temps for almost everything. Unfortunately a spring when it's -1 and snowing for a week solid isn't what I'm talking about.
Alas, I got spoiled in my first years out here. :(

We didn't get much snow this March until now. It was a horrible drive from Hamilton to Whitby and back.
I seen almost 20 people spin out and one even went over the median onto the other side of the road.
They said we were only suppose to get 5-10cm today but it's still snowing, I just finished shoveling my driveway and there is almost 3cm on it again.
This picture shows how much snow we have gotten in Hamilton as of 5pm today.

Spring has Sprung!
Today was fantastic on the west coast. It was a beautiful sunny 15 degrees this afternoon in Pitt Meadows, so I made sure to go for a run after work today!
And the best part of a mild sunny day in March on the west coast is that there is no snow / snow banks to be melted, there is no ice on the lakes / rivers, the grass is already green and quite lush in many areas, the flowers are out, many cherry trees are blossoming, etc... The frogs in the wetlands behind my house are going crazy this evening! I love that sound.
One also knows spring has truly arrived in Metro Vancouver when YVR airport becomes the coolest location in the metro again. White Rock was 17 today, Pitt Meadows & Abbotsford were 15, YVR, only 11.

duno wat to say out here in the peg -3 today the snow storm missed winnipeg but the river vallys got slamed with snow not what we need... were preparing here for a big one dikes being built up along the assinboin the portage diversion (same idea as the floodway but just drains into lake manitoba instead of back into the river) sand bags already being made and set up in places needed the city is survaying peoples yards along the river for the dikes and such their talking 1997 levels inside the city if not higher so its going to be the big one if we had not expanded the floodway we would be totaly screwed right now. plus the ground was allot dryer in 1997 then it is now........ so we got a triple wammy 2 rivers that will burst plus high water tables in the ground..............

Snow storm in North Dakota delays Manitoba's flood update
By: Staff Writer
Posted: 03/23/2011 1:48 PM
Manitoba’s new flood update, which was to happen today, won’t take place until officials here get a better idea of the impact of a late-winter snow storm in North Dakota, Water Stewardship Minister Christine Melnick said today.
The storm dumped more than 25 centimetres on the state and regions in eastern Minnesota and South Dakota over night. Major highways only recently re-opened.
"They got walloped," Melnick said.

If by here you mean Canada, then yes. If by here you mean Calgary, then hell yes.
It's mostly because this is one of the coldest, snowiest winters in a fairly long time. At least in Calgary, we had double the normal snowfall for January and February. Add in the 10-15 degree below normal temps we've been suffering, and it feels like winter is lasting many weeks longer than normal. Think about it - by this point last year, we were already a month into above zero highs every day. And last year was the year with the cooler summer that everyone complained about. It's not surprising that people are starting to feel like it's been colder than normal for a very long time.

Some stats from EC (avg high, avg low, mean temp):
March 2011: -3.3, -12.4, -7.8
March 2010: 9.6, -3.2, 3.19
Average: 4, -7.8, -1.9
Feb 2011: -3.9, -15.4, -9.62
Feb 2010: 0.3, -9.5, -4.6
Average: -0.1, -12, -6.1
So yeah. Somewhat colder than average, and WAY colder than last year. And last year wasn't a particularly warm year, either. Ah well, I guess we have to have these cold years to make up for the winters where it only gets cold for a week or two and the snow never lasts.

I've lived here all my life and I can't recall snow being on the ground for 4 months straight... and could possibly still be here for 5 months (April. 15) if it don't warm up soon!
Mind you EC's saying it's supposed to be 15C by next Thursday... we'll see!
There has been alot of melting in the weeks before this one and alot of open brown fields here in Cochrane, but still a shitload in the trees and on peoples lawns. By this time of year it should be gone and green grass starting to sprout along buildings where the daytime sun reflecting makes it warmer.

I can't believe people in Calgary complain about weather so much. For me, Calgary's climate is one of the more desirable of any place I've been. Take all the good points about Calgary's weather - lots of sun, dry summers, mild dry winters, early springlike conditions for a prairie city - and completely invert it, and you have the past 9-10 months or so. Every environmental factor is just about the exact opposite of normal. It's been cloudy as all hell, far more rain and snow, a pretty cool summer followed by a very cold winter that never seems to end.
I agree with you - the climate out here is one of the best overall that I've ever experienced. Unfortunately, that climate hasn't existed here in nearly a year.

It's really hard to think it's almost April... last spring we already had two days over 25.5C (with humidex) and we were done with frost. We didn't record any low below freezing in April.
It was so warm and dry in Quebec that we remember the forest fires in early May. Having drought conditions so early was uncommon. The second half of May was even warmer compared to normal. We didn't drop below 10C AT ALL during that time. Almost every day was warm enough for beach. We even broke the all-time monthly high when Montreal recorded 34.7C on the 26th. Not only it was the warmest May day ever but the warmest spring day!
That would end up being our highest temperature for 2010 and the warmest temperature recorded in Montreal in the last 8 years. Just shows how crazy warm was last year's spring.
I remember reading somewhere that Montreal had 2010 avg temperatures that were higher than those in Washington DC during a normal spring.:sly:

Just as a way to show how lousy it's been in Calgary for the past week...
According to the EC website, for the 163 hours from 12 am Sunday (3/20) to 8 pm Saturday (3/26), the reported hourly observations were:
Mostly cloudy/cloudy: 20
Light snow/snow: 93
Some combination of snow grains, fog, freezing fog and/or freezing drizzle: 50
Anything resembling the words clear, sunny or partly sunny: 0
Sure hope the forecast for later next week is right!

Nothing but clear skies and slightly below normal temperatures in Winnipeg since last Thursday and more of the same forecast through next Friday, although the temperatures are forecast to creep up into normal range later in the week.

Just to confirm that post above, it's true. Calgary has not seen even a hint of sun in well over a week. I honestly am close to slitting my wrists right now, I don't know how people handle this happening on a regular basis in other cities. I saw a glimpse of blue sky and sun yesterday by driving into the mountains and it made me feel like I was in the Caribbean. And I turn on the TV today, the Manitoba Moose game is on, and they show this GORGEOUS skyline shot with pure dark blue in the background. I almost cried.
EC is still claiming we're going to see some sun, but their forecast highs are down significantly from 2 days ago, which is never a good sign. The Weather Network is basically forecasting a couple of warmish (ie: close to normal) days with sun, and then back to cloudy and snow for 2 more weeks.
Did I mention slitting my wrists yet? :hell:

Not really! It's been sunny this week but we've had cold winds that make it feels like winter. This morning, it went down to -10C with a wind chill of -18C which is really, really cold for late March.
Right now it's sunny but below freezing which rarely happens at this time of the year.:(

Nothing to complain about here! A nice mix of sun and cloud today and 12 to 13 for a high, many people were out pruning there gardens and mowing the lawn today, as I went for a nice jog in a t-shirt and shorts.
At the Pitt Meadows weather station (closest to my house), the last ten days have had highs of 10, 12, 10, 14, 11, 10, 15, 17, 10, 14 and today so far is 12.
For me, there is much more to do with good spring weather than just how sunny it is, over the last 10 days here it has been about 60% clouds with a few periods of rain mixed in there, and 40% sunshine (there were a couple days that were mostly sunny but it seems almost everyday, such as today, is able to sneak in at least a couple hours of sunshine), but, as you see above, it has been mild the entire time, that makes a big deference to me. As does the fact that the shrubs are greening up fast, many flowers are out, cherry blossoms are out in areas, the grass is green, there are no snow banks or icy surfaces anywhere( al the water is free flowing!), all the birds are out / singing, the frogs are out at night, etc...
It has actually been amazing me this last week how large of a contrast there is from the west coast to the other side of the Rockies right now.

The West Coast and the North are currently the only places in Canada (and one of the few in North America) not to be below normal.
It's currently snowing in Kansas City... Avg high for March 27 is 15C there!:sly:

I'll take sunny -10 over cloudy, foggy, frosty, snowy -5 any day. Seriously, Calgary's temp has hovered between about -3 and -7 for over a week. Highs and lows. With near-constant fog, huge hoarfrost forming everywhere, and snow every damn day. If the winter was mild, this wouldn't be so bad but it's starting to feel like we live in the coastal Arctic.
I do agree that -10 this time of year is cold damn near anywhere. We can complain together!

After spending 3 weeks around green grass and daffodils its hard to take this non spring. I keep telling myself 2 more months till I have to cut the grass. I still have over a meter of snow around the house. ( close my eyes and think happy thoughts remember you have had your first patio beer of the year)
supposed to be up to +8 by Friday just in time for me to head to Baffin.

It has been sunny for the past week or so, unusual for Ottawa. The snow is almost gone and resembles weird jagged rock formations. Forecasting double digits by Thursday... hopefully winter is gone.

I think it's safe to say that this is one of the strongest La Ninas on record. EVERYWHERE is cold right now with the exception of Vancouver and vicinity, and even they had some pretty unusually cold spells this winter if posts here are any indication.
I hope someone like Nicko posts whenever EC declares this "coldest winter in X years", because you gotta think that's coming.

The Sun is shining for the first time in about a week and a half, that's a hell of a long time for Calgary.
