Holy crap, Calgary's getting buried!
OK, so it's not the biggest blizzard of the century but it's definitely the most we've had so far and it's been going for several hours already. I didn't see this kind of snow in any forecast although maybe I wasn't paying attention. A few roads are closed and buses are getting stuck climbing hills. The snowblower is definitely getting a workout tomorrow.

My back alley just got plowed creating a substantial snowbank along the curb.
Earlier, there was a line of vehicles that couldn't make it up the hill below my place. Now there is zero traffic.

It's been an amazing November and autumn in Eastern Canada so far...
We finished November 2011 with an average maximum temperature of 9.8C which shatters the old monthly record in 1948 of 9.1C.
1948 stays our warmest November on record though because of the extremely mild nights it had back then (avg 5.3C in 2011 vs 5.8C in 1948).
November 2011 still ends as the 2nd or 3th mildest month on record.
We also had the warmest climatological autumn (September 1st to November 30th) on record!!!
The avg of 11.0C breaks the old record of 10.7C from 1961.
Let's hope the colder air stays in the West.:P

Was another beautiful sunny day here on the west coast, temps around 6 to 9 in the afternoon, but felt great in the sunshine!
I was in Sechelt today so i snapped a few pics of the Sunshine Coast in December!
Some palm trees on the main street:

Chill out, warm weather won’t be record breaker
The Hamilton Spectator
http://www.thespec.com/news/local/article/639609--chill-out-warm-weather-won-t-be-record-breaker
Hamilton has yet to “spring” into winter.
With an expected high of 11 C Thursday, the burst of warm weather will be brief and is likely to “fall” shy of the previous record of 14.4 C set in 1975.
Environment Canada is predicting the temperature in Hamilton should drop closer to the freezing mark later in the week.
Fears that the warm weather could spell trouble for plants and trees are premature, says Carlo Balistrieri, head of horticulture at the Royal Botanical Gardens.
“In all likelihood, because it’s going to be one degree in a day or two, no,” Balistrieri said Wednesday. “A short-term fluctuation like that is not going to have any major effects.”
Environment Canada issued a forecast saying Hamilton will drop to one degree above freezing by Thursday night.
Historically, Dec. 15 has averaged a high of 0.9 C and a low of -6.1 C.

Supposed to be in the negatives today, but warming up tomorrow, and staying above the freezing mark for the next week, though in Calgary that can change very quickly.

You can tell when Calgary is having a "normal" winter because none of us are on here posting about it. When it's extremely warm or extremely cold, we make note of it - and we haven't had much of either. We keep adding to Windsor's already record precipitation amounts this year. It's nearly 1400 mm now (a normal year brings about 850 mm). The farm fields around town are completely saturated and it's been a bad year for agriculture all around.
Windsor's weather records only go back to 1940 but Detroit's go back to the 1870s and they're saying this is their 2nd wettest year ever (apparently 1880 is the wettest year and we're only about half an inch from reaching that record).
It seems over the past few years that the storm track has been further north so extreme southwestern Ontario has been hit hard from storms that would normally be down over Ohio. That includes snowstorms in the winter where Windsor has been pounded while Toronto gets nothing.

Still have enough of a child in me to remember the disappointment of going to bed without snow and the pure joy of seeing 2 feet had fallen overnight/very early Christmas morn (back in the years when the prairies got a lot of snow when it fell). Which is weird. Calgary has the fewest white Xmases of any major Canadian city that's not coastal nor below the 44th parallel, yet we're one of the whiter cities in Canada right now. Which is weird. Calgary has the fewest white Xmases of any major Canadian city that's not coastal nor below the 44th parallel, yet we're one of the whiter cities in Canada right now. According to some stories we may not qualify as "white" this year, but I find that hard to believe. The city and surrounding areas are most certainly white.
It's brown for the most part out west of the city again. Sure liking this winter over the last few, fairly mild and a few cms of wet snow every week beats the 40cm dumps with minus 30 windchills of the last 3.

I recently came across something interesting -- a picture of a daffodil that is blooming in late December in Annapolis Royal, NS. They also just had a snowfall:

Here's what the daily weather was like on Brier Island, NS in November: http://climate.weatheroffice.gc.ca/climateData/dailydata_e.html?timeframe=2&Prov=XX&StationID=10859&Year=2011&Month=11
Average high: 11.4
Average low: 5.7
That station didn't go below 0 until it had one night of -0.7 on December 10. So far December highs there are averaging 8.3 and the coldest low is -4.0.

*sigh* We (prairies) are in the subarctic, this Christmas just ain't right. :koko: Our backyard still has around 35% coverage and I'm imagining with the temps I've seen in the major prairie cities it ain't much different in them. To me a white Christmas is total coverage and to truly look right there has to be at least 6 inches sitting out there (though preferably a foot or two or three).
Off to eat some of my sour cabbage rolls (nothing in this world beats them for comfort food :tup:)
Merry Christmas Canada!

Officially -16.9C yesterday morning... big reason of the drop in temperature is the snow cover...
Take Burlington for example (with a lot less snow cover right now), they never went below -14.4C
Boston with no snow cover was about -7C.

EC forecasted 2cm of snow and -1C for Christmas day.
...
Instead, we stayed below -7 and got more than 10cm of snow so far (it's still coming down pretty nicely)!
I could not have asked for a better Christmas gift, considering that there was not a flake in sight on Wednesday!
And what a beautiful snow it is - There is almost no wind and the snow is fluffy and powdery. Perfect Christmas weather, if you ask me!
And, a bonus, we got our required 2cm last night and therefore have a WHITE Christmas! Along with Québec and a handful of other cities, we are one of the rare ones this year...

I dontget all of this warmth love. We live in Canada. Christmas is about snow and cooler weather.
We had to cancel our 12th annual tobogganing day. Rinks are barely open.

The grass is not only green in Port Lambton, ON, it's actually still thick and lush. My relatives down here say it's hardly even been freezing at night. It was 6 degrees and sunny on Christmas day. There was a light snow on the night of the 23rd, but it was melted by noon on Christmas Eve.
